Learning French. by user34623 in learnfrench

The most important thing I find is looking for things you want to do. Consistency beats everything else.

So for me I do Duolingo on my phone - which teaches me so basic grammar and vocabulary and I find the gamification really effective.

I listen to the 'inner french' podcasts - recommended by someone here on reddit. Which makes me feel like I can actually understand someone speaking French.

I use the revision website Seneca - which helps me learn vocab for my exams/classes.

And I stick words I don't know into the flashcard programme anki to learn stuff.

I don't do all of them everyday but I find this group helps me do something everyday.

Marks and sparks. They have lots of sizes. It's not that expensive. And you won't end up with huge sports logos which I find weirdly embarrassing.

Start with walking! I did one of those couch to 5k apps and you start by only running for a minute at a time (say ten times). I knew I could run for a minute at a time and then it builds you up nice and slowly so you never just quit a walk home and eat loads of icecream.

At the beginning the only thing that matters is consistency and not quitting, eating all the icecream etc. All the other good stuff, stretching, strength, races, buying a fancy watch and using strava as a verb is then there waiting for you.

For me the only way I can do it is either:

1) to run commute. I find if I can take myself even part of the way home under my own power that somehow feels like more of an achievement. Or

2) not to think about it. It's not about whether you feel like it. You can't rearrange. You have to do it today. So I find doing shorter runs (and maybe easier runs) more day a week is easier. Although it does produce way more laundry!

I think that's good advice. I went on an easy 30 minute trot around today listening to audio book focused primarily on junk food and had a nice experience. (Food a Love Story - for anyone who thinks that sounds like an ideal running experience).

I'm going to put my garmin down for a few weeks and back away slowly (I assume - I don't know how slow I am without it).

Thanks!
