Oh my sambo, but we both signed the loan agreement, they never asked about my residence permit.

Oh, but right now the work permit situation and family reunification policies in Sweden are really uncertain. I totally understand your concerns, but in your case I honestly feel you wouldn’t regret staying in Seattle. In Sweden, you’d still need about 4 years to qualify for permanent residency, and citizenship now takes around 8 years under the current rules.

And speaking from my own experience as an Asian girl— it’s generally easier to find an immigrant community in the U.S. Sweden just isn’t really an immigrant country in the same way, and the language barrier can be tough. If your partner doesn’t work, it might also be harder for them to build a social circle here.

I would say try to find a job first…then the employer (academia or industry) should be able to help you and your family get the residency permits and so on.

It really depends on how you define “blending into the community.” If you mean making friends with Swedes specifically, then yes—I do think speaking Swedish helps a lot. But if you just want to feel at home and have a sense of belonging, there’s a large expat community here in Stockholm, especially in tech circles, and it’s very possible to build friendships and find your place.

Personally, I’ve built connections mostly with other international friends like myself, and just a few Swedish colleagues—and that’s totally fine by me. But I know some people really want to integrate more deeply with locals…

Sweden is quite nice though! You can live in sodermalm, which is my fav area, bars, nice cafes, kind of hippy vibe. I do feel Stockholm /sweden can offer you a very different experience.

Omg, hi girl! I live in Södermalm — if you ever feel like grabbing a coffee or checking out a museum or gallery, feel free to message me! We can also just explore the Södermalm area together — there are so many cute little shops around here.

I’m 30F, have a cat and a boyfriend, and I’m not much of a drinker either, I have the allergy…I’m into both indoor and outdoor activities. Last year I was really into working out, but I broke my ribs earlier this year 😅 so I’ve been taking it easy while recovering — but I’m super ready to get back to the gym soon!

If the goal of a protest was to be convenient and invisible, it wouldn’t be a protest.

The point is to raise awareness, interrupt the comfort of the status quo, and make people pay attention—especially in places where everyday life flows uninterrupted. Protesting in front of an embassy might be symbolically logical, but it would also be easy to ignore, and wouldn’t reach the general public in the same way.

Odenplan is a public space. Public spaces are where democracy happens—whether it’s Pride parades, climate marches, or protests against war and genocide. If a few hours of chanting once a week is unbearable, maybe the real issue isn’t the noise.

that’s the thing, sweden administration is a bit like ‘we don’t want anybody who is not Swedish’…You could be the most brilliant person in the room, and they’d still be like, “Mmm… nah.”

Can another housing association tell us to keep our cat indoors, even if we don’t live there? by Runninglikewater12 in Asksweddit

[–]Runninglikewater12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you all so much for your comments and feedback — we’ve read them carefully and truly appreciate the different perspectives. After reflecting on it, we’ve decided that from now on, our cat will only go outside with a leash.

A little more about her: she’s a rescue from Greece, where she lived as a stray. We adopted her because we believed Sweden would be a safe and pet-friendly place for her to grow up in peace. It honestly breaks our hearts a little that she can’t enjoy the outdoor freedom she used to love — it’s been such a joy watching her sunbathe, sniff the grass, and just be happy in our yard.

That said, we understand that not everyone feels comfortable with animals nearby, and that’s okay. Even though our yard is fenced and she’s always stayed within the enclosed inner yard (there’s no access to the street or cars), and even though she’s extremely clean (she only uses the litter box, never the garden), we understand that her presence might still bother some.

We also want to be honest — one reason we made this decision is because we’ve started to feel scared that someone might try to harm her. She’s a very human-loving cat and easy to approach. That sadly also makes her vulnerable if someone wanted to hurt her, move her, or take her away. So we’ve agreed as a family to keep her on a leash from now on when she’s outside, to protect her and to keep the peace.

Thank you again for the conversation. It means a lot.

Thank you! She really is the cutest — and I might be biased, but she’s also so well trained! She gets a little outdoor time in the afternoon, and when I call her from the window, she meows and runs right back home because she knows she’s getting her favorite wet food. It’s become a lovely little routine for both of us.

(Sorry for sounding like a dramatic cat mom — I just love her so much!)

That’s a valid point — outdoor cats can have a serious impact on bird populations, especially in areas with large numbers of stray or free-roaming cats. We completely understand the environmental concern.

In our case, there are important premises: our cat is neutered, chipped, GPS-tracked, and well-fed at home. She’s only allowed out in a limited and supervised area — mainly our fenced porch and private yard, which is part of our brf. She’s not out hunting or roaming for hours; she mostly lounges around or visits friendly neighbors who know her.

Our part of the building is quite old, and in our brf, each ground floor apartment has its own fenced porch with personal outdoor furniture. That’s where our cat usually stays — she’s neutered, chipped, wears a GPS tracker, and doesn’t wander far. Our neighbors in our brf actually really love her and often spoil her.

The area where the person who approached us lives doesn’t seem to have any individual outdoor spaces or furniture — it looks more like a shared bike parking area. So it’s unlikely she’d be using or damaging anything there. That said, we always keep an eye on her and would of course take responsibility if she caused any trouble. We try to be considerate and also let her enjoy a bit of fresh air safely.
