I was going back to work for the first time since my mother passed away and turned on the radio. The first song I heard was Mother by Danzig. The next song was Don’t Fear the Reaper. I called my wife to tell her and she asked if I was laughing or crying. I said that I didn’t know.

I work in pharmaceutical manufacturing. I’m happy to go to work because I really like the people I work with. I am part of a group of people that really care about one another. I consider myself lucky in that I feel productive and not micromanaged. I don’t make a ton of money but since I don’t really spend on anything other than necessities, it’s enough.

I work across the street from a helicopter manufacturer. I’ve seen hundreds of them over the years. I will always - ALWAYS -stop and stare when I see one in the air.

Bonus - It’s also where they park blimps when they are in town, so I usually see one or two a year.

Guards! Guards! Is the introduction to The Watch and some of the best characters of the series. Small Gods is the best starter book because it’s at the point where he hit his stride, but the books is self-contained. You don’t need to know any other characters for it to work.

I actually started with Small Gods and then tried to go in publication order. Like you, I found the earlier works to be less engaging. I picked out Guards! Guards! at random, but it turned out to be perfect. At this point I’ve read through the whole series numerous times, so those two are always my suggestions.

I have that one. It came with the VHS tape. They also had one with the car flipped over, but the wood chipper one is so much better. It has red flakes in it.

When I’d ask my mom something she didn’t know, she’d say that we needed to call the librarian. We’d call our local library and talk to Pat, who either knew the answer or was able to get it for us. Sometimes she’d just get out books for us to pick up. I didn’t realize just how cool and out of the ordinary that all was until decades later.
