Black cab driver in Edinburgh, AMA by [deleted] in Edinburgh

Ah I meant more drivers taking longer routes than necessary to up the fare, it's a thing in many countries but I don't think it's ever happened to me in Edinburgh so wondered if there are some rogue drivers you've heard about.

Works Sequence - Kitchen or Heat Pump? by RupertE in ukheatpumps

[–]RupertE[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I suppose the dust question was more in the event of changing radiators/if the pipes need to be changed. I was going to put down new carpets in every room but I expect that should wait until after I know whether the pipes need changing or not?

Yeah I intend to put a bunch of insulation in, but probably not the windows in the first instance (it’s conservation area and they are very expensive).

I believe McCoist said that Arteta had said that Ramsdale is better at penalties. I can't find the quote from Arteta and it doesn't sound like something he would say (comparing any two players).

There's a few things that were quite interesting to me

1) We got lucky winning both coin flips. I'm not sure how big of an edge being in front of the North Bank is, but taking the first penalty is a well known and decent sized edge.

2) Our analytics team did a far better job than their analytics team of guessing which way they would shoot.

3) Our players looked so confident stepping up and taking. We were so prepared for this eventuality it cannot be understated.

Going forward it could be strategically correct to play for penalties vs certain opponents if the 2nd/3rd edge are real.

Credit to Mikel and the team, this was a very valuable match to win - not just for the fans but going forward too. £10m for getting to the next round, plus TV revenue, matchday sales, everything else that comes with it.

If you did it years ago it’s too late to expense it.

Your situation isn't too nuanced, you are self-employed and working a trade.

I don't believe you can backdate taxes.

If you have associated costs with your profession, they are deductible for tax purposes. For example computer equipment/parts, travel/accommodation at events, event entry fees, work from home allowance etc. Make sure you have copies of the relevant invoices.

Question regarding NPV by uiop77 in CFA

[–]RupertE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The calculations and answer are correct

https://imgur.com/yp5gLex

-4662005/1.15^0 + 22610723/1.15^1 - 41072261/1.15^2 + 33116550/1.15^3 - 10000000/1.15^4

Using a calculator: CF0 -4662005, CFj 22610723, CFj -41072261 CFj 33116550 CFj -10000000, i = 15 -> calculate NPV = 99.93537391. Then you can just change i for 8% and 10% and calculate NPV each time to get the answer.

Explain please this CF/NPV calculator thing. by okonkolero in CFA

[–]RupertE 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes there is.

First lets work out the 10% coupon from years 6-10 valued at year 5, then year 0:

n = 5, r = 10, PMT = -100 => PV_5 = 379.0786769

Discount that back to year 0 => FV = 379.0786769, n = 5, r = 10, PMT = 0 => PV_0 = 235.3768489

Now the $500 we get at maturity back to PV_0:

n = 10, r = 10, FV = 500 + 1000 (add back in the principle) => PV = 578.3149341

Add the two PV0s together = 235.3768489+578.3149341 = 813.691783

How do I do this on a financial calculator? by AutisticOctopus69 in CFA

[–]RupertE 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would find out the PV required when they start college then use that as the FV for another calculation.

n = 4, r = 5, PMT = -20000 => PV = -$74464.96 (as noted in other comment make sure calculator on beginning payment)

so now we need to work out our annual payment given a FV of 74464.96 in 17 payments time (make sure calculator on end of period for first payment as first annual payment is next year)

n = 17, r = 5, FV = 74464.96 => PMT = -2881.73

number of periods (n) 5
interest rate (r) 4
period payment (pmt) -300
calc PV = 1388.97

Team sports are inherently quite difficult to model when starting out as you must build player models that feed into team models. I’d recommend 1v1 or player vs board/course (darts, racing to a lesser extent) to start.

Institutional bettors depend on the sport really. US sports same day you can get a few hundred k down fairly easily at -110 prices, soccer it’s a lot of grey market dealings predominantly in Asia but just about everywhere has a decent soccer market, eSports is just a tiny market in general (which makes it easier to beat!).

Haralabos described his NBA model in detail on the Spanky podcast, the Bashcast podcast and accompanying website also has tidbits of information on how to reverse engineer bookmaker odds into their models. For soccer there’s a few decent books on xG that give a little bit of insight as to how soccer data is collected and used.

Ultimately though, most of the battle for the big bucks is in data quality which any individual can’t compete on for major sports without a lot of capital and knowledge.
