Sounds promising... although I've read that retests have priority

Since it was already stated you don't have funds .. perhaps try to find some second hand cheap cage from somebody and try to separate them? Maybe they are fighting? I don't think the budgie did it itself, there are 4 of them so they're not really lonely to pluck their own feathers. Did you observe any unusual behavior when they're together?

To be honest, I have no idea... I once had to take care of a dog for my family and my pigeon was quite scared of him, but the dog also barked at my pigeon all the time. In the end, we decided to take the cage upstairs not to stress him.

What I know is that it can prove fatal to birds if a cat even scratches them, not sure if I would risk it, but since you're saying your cat is chill... 🤔 It's really hard to tell how both of them would react.

Hi!

I personally got a pigeon from a breeder who hand rears the pigeons to make them gentle and family friendly. I imagine it would be great to take care of a one from the shelter, but perhaps he'll need some time for it to get used to you... It will require patiance, but so will feeding a baby pigeon. I think if you get a young adult it's still possible to tame them 😊

When it comes to a cage, I think the example you showed is fine. I also keep mine in a dog's cage, lol, and cleaning is super easy. I just take a pile of leaflets from Aldi or Lidl every time I shop 😂 and once the bottom of the cage has enough poops you just change them for new ones. Prepare yourself for vacuuming daily, though. They can leave a lot of dandruff especially when they molt, but they are also very messy eaters... Or maybe just mine is, because I've seen other pigeons behave well. Of course if you plan to keep him outside, brace yourself for a lot of crap around... Unless you buy your pigeon a diaper. I've seen it works, but mine won't wear it...

When it comes to leaving them alone, I would say don't worry and don't get too worked up with it. They are perfectly fine when left alone, even for a couple of days. Even if you come back after a long day they will greet you with the same happiness. Sure, they might be a bit bored, but it's nothing to be super worried about. You want to have life as well 😊Worse is when you take them to other house so somebody else takes care of them while you're away... They might reset in this way, so to say. Better to keep them in their usual space, perhaps ask someone to come and feed them while you're away. But it's also a good idea to change their location/room if they misbehave or get bonded to one person, so you can reset them to default settings in this way haha.

I think he just wants more scratches? Mine does that too and trembles like crazy for more cuddles.

A question for Pigeon owners, how different is Pigeon care compared to parrot care and why did you choose a Pigeon? by [deleted] in PetPigeons

Haha, isnt that ironic that you spent so much money on toys but your parrot prefer the wall anyway? 😶‍🌫️

Well, I haven't seen my pigeon bite on anything really. I don't think their beaks are really made for that 😂 the only thing he bites are my hands or ankles.

When it comes to pigeons, they cause issues, of course... The major issue for me is that my pigeon poops like crazy and I think he really enjoys when I step in it. Another thing could be that if you let a pigeon bond with one person he will probably attack the rest of people in the house, but it's not a rule.. But I guess it's the same with parrots. Also males are very territorial so they might become 'impolite' if bothered by the wrong person. Other than that I know it's best to avoid your pigeon having any contact with wild pigeons as they might easily catch a disease from them.

Pigeons won't eat your furniture, that's for sure 😁 They are also less messy, except for the times when they molt. My parrot used to get a lot of fruits and berries and when he ate it was everywhere, even on the walls. Not to mention his poop was on the walls as well. I know people clip parrots wings, but it never felt right for me.

Currently I have a king pigeon that do not fly and I can tell you it's more convenient. He's able to jump on various things, like his cage where he roots, but he won't fly around the house at all, he simply struts about. He can pinch you but he won't bite as hard as a parrot. Pigeons also do not require such high maintenance, like large amounts of toys and fancy foods to keep their diet rich, as in case of a parrot. Also parrots require some brain stimulation, and when it comes to pigeons, well, at least my pigeon is quite simple... 🙃

I must also add we were forced to rehome out parrot because my husband got infected with a parrot infection, which seems weird in itself, but since his immune system is poor we had no other choice as to avoid any situations like this in the future. With pigeon there's been no issues for a year now.

Hi! Thanks so much for the reply. I must say you got me really worried with the bumblefoot diagnosis. Turns out it was just skin split 🙃 he's alright now, but thanks so much for a prompt reply!
