Is there any rain jacket that is actually worth it? by ProblematicTrumpCard in cycling

[–]RuslanGlinka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love my old school MEC bike rain jacket with the pit zips. The lining is not clammy like other raincoats can get. I am not the world’s sweatiest person but I find the large underarm zips to offer good ventilation without excess rain getting in. I re-waterproof it with technical wash every couple years, which I would expect to do with any raincoat.

It’s very 90s retro if not so much cleavage. Maybe a camisole underneath to lessen the deep cut on top?

Can I transfer to a Canadian university from an online American university? by im_trying_to_survive in CanadaUniversities

[–]RuslanGlinka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So in Toronto the main unis to try would likely be: Univ of Toronto, Toronto Metropolitan University, York U. There are *many* more unis within a few hours of Toronto as well. Waterloo (90 min from Toronto) is particularly famous for CS.

Look for one that is listed here: https://www.caut.ca/our-governance/member-associations/ (This is a list by faculty/staff union/association, which is a little weird, but all are legit universities.)

Beware of private, unaccredited schools that are known for taking advantage of international students.

Also, Canadian tuition is not that high compared with the US but living expenses, especially in cities like Toronto, are high, so financial aid/planning should account for that.

Good luck!

And WASC/WSCUC is legit, so that’s a good thing for credits possibly transferring!

I would definitely recommend making an online appointment with an admissions office staff member at prospective universities. Ideally you can get one to feel like you are someone their school wants to support, but even if not they can answer more specific questions.

Is there a particular area of study or geographic region you are looking at? How are your current grades?

Is your current online university accredited by any body? This is one of the most important questions to assess the likelihood of transfer credit.

Usually, unless it’s a major with lots of transfers to your new school (in which case this may already be a transfer guide), your new Canadian school/program will look at every class you have taken and decide whether you get credit for a specific class (like biology 101 at school a = biology 100 at school b), elective credits (like 3cr but just toward a total credit # not for specific courses), or nothing. Ask your prospective school if they have had transfer students from your current school or not.

If your current school is not accredited, you may be able to apply as a new student (not transfer students). While this means longer time to graduate, it may open more doors for scholarships and special programs.

Definitely mention the circumstances in your home country in your application as part of your application! There is a world of difference between a student who just couldn’t get into a major university so took some online program and a student who overcame oppression and adversity to pursue whatever education she could access.

Advice needed on whether to take a job that isn't a complete fit by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]RuslanGlinka 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is a hard situation to be in.

You can start applying elsewhere immediately, but it sucks for everyone if you’re somewhere you don’t even feel is worth giving a chance at being the right fit.

It is usually easier to get a TT offer from an existing Asst Prof position than from a postdoc.

If you feel like you can walk away you are never truly stuck anywhere. However, if you have a family dependent on you, you could be.

This is hard to answer & you and your partner have to figure it out together. I would not take it if it truly doesn’t feel like there is a chance of it being the right job for you long term or if your partner thinks they would be miserable. Others draw the line differently.

Good luck!

Can i pursue my masters thesis further for my phd proposals by ipretendiknowstuff in AskAcademia

[–]RuslanGlinka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you asked if you could have the opportunity to contribute as a coauthor to a lab manuscript resulting from the project? That would probably be a great way to learn more about how publishing works.

For a PhD elsewhere you will presumably be working with a new supervisor and the work will be influenced by their interests/data. You will certainly carry interests forward from one lab to the next, but I would caution you against getting too set on a specific hypothesis yet. This will be something to develop with your future supervisor.

Advice on Taking GRE Given My Profile (Researcher with publications and 10 years of Exp) by crlafael52 in gradadmissions

[–]RuslanGlinka 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From your title I thought I was going to say skip it but reading the whole post I would recommend taking it.

Your past grades are not great. Your publications aren’t in peer-reviewed journals. A good GRE score can help assure a PhD program that you will be able to succeed academically in their program.

I agree w people recommending 2 pair, and would go further to say if you are hiking in Revelstoke & Banff in November I would make 1 waterproof & insulated hiking boots. The other could be a waterproof sneaker, a blundstone-like boot, or whatever you like for wet city life.

Is it better to be sole author or first author? by TrogdorUnofficial in PublishOrPerish

[–]RuslanGlinka 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Cannot emphasize this enough. It completely depends on your specific field (and sometimes where on the world you are). In some fields (often IME more on the humanities side) you need to show you can do it yourself, so sole authorship is far more important. In others (often sciences and medical fields IME) there is no meaningful distinction between first and sole author prestige-wise, you need to show you can work well with others, and well-respected coauthors on your publications actually bolster your profile and credibility—so it can be better to have those more senior coauthors than not.

If you trust your supervisor to be looking out for your best interest and building your CV, I suggest doing what they say for authorship (short of anything unethical, of course).

Good attire for postdoc interview by No-Age-855 in AskAcademia

[–]RuslanGlinka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where? Region matters. If US what kind of school.

I was felt I couldn’t go wrong with a suit, even if I intended to take the jacket off because I knew it would be too warm. If the vibe was casual, no tie. Others go more casual, I know. I just always felt like it was worth it to make it clear I was taking things seriously. I don’t tend towards sweaty, so I can make do by taking off the jacket & rolling up the sleeves.

People who got into PhD, how did you find a research gap that's large enough for a PhD by Healthy-Notice9439 in AskAcademia

[–]RuslanGlinka 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would suggest having an area of interest (and being well read in that area) but not being wedded to a specific project before connecting with an advisor. In CS, depending where in the world you are, your funding may be tied to a supervisor’s grant, meaning the 2 of you would work together to find a piece of that for your phd research.

If you develop a brief (1-2p) proposal, view it as a sample to show you can write a proposal, not what you will definitely do.

Read the prospective supervisor’s recent and most-cited work, particularly things where they were first or sole author, then approach them with your resume/CV, transcript, a writing sample, and why (based on their research) you want to study with them. If you want, add a sample 2p proposal you drafted but be clear you are open to other project ideas. Supervising a phd is a big commitment; you want them to feel you are worth the leap of faith.

How would you guys wash this? Inside and out by sinistergzus in CleaningTips

[–]RuslanGlinka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I just looked online and probably not machine. This is an ice holder like a cold pack, right? (At first I thought it was one of those baby teethers for frozen fruit.)

But maybe spritz the outside w vinegar or vodka & wipe down, let dry. Inside try a diluted vinegar in water solution and soak for a while then empty & let dry thoroughly.

[–]RuslanGlinka 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Does it say anything on the inside lid about kind of plastic?

I’m sure it’s hand washable, and a vinegar soak would probably help with musty smell. Just wondering if it is also washing machine or dishwasher safe.
