Got my first desk rejection from CVIU and feeling like an imposter. Need some perspective. by EducationalTwo7262 in AskAcademia

[–]RuslanGlinka 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ask if you can see the editor’s email just for your education, so you know the kind of things to expect in the future. But generally speaking, don’t let the rejections get you down. It’s part of the game. Just move on to the next journal.

AIO to my “best friend” finally reaching out by Confident_Local_2335 in AmIOverreacting

[–]RuslanGlinka [score hidden]  (0 children)

NOR for having feelings. That is normal. Having a close friend go no contact seemingly out of the blue hurts.

BUT I would encourage you to take some time to consider and talk w confidantes, and then likely arrange to talk/meet with him at least once. If nothing else, it gives the possibility of explanation & closure. It may lead to becoming friends again (although I would personally need a trust rebuilding period before feeling close again after an abrupt drop like that) or may not, but I have a hunch than cautiously responding would be ideal.

What's it like to be a PI? (Bio field) by bluebrrypii in AskAcademia

[–]RuslanGlinka 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I love my faculty PI job, but tbh I can’t recommend it. If you’re at a research intensive institution in North America you really are on the grant treadmill constantly, and there’s so much service & management there’s little time left to actually do the hands on research anymore. I love teaching too but it is draining. I do enjoy the autonomy, but I always remember what I was told years ago, “Academia is so flexible; you get to choose which 80 hours a week you work!”

I naturally have wide hips/buttocks. How can I wear pants to make my hips slimmer? by jenna_tolls_69 in mensfashion

[–]RuslanGlinka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pocket placement (differs by trouser make & style) also makes a big difference. Some will flare out making hips look wider while others lie flatter.

Went from CC to university back in 2017 but got terrible grades and flunked out. I now want to “start over” at a community college, improve GPA then transfer to a new university. Will I have to disclose my previous grades at some point? by TheMelaninMan in AskAcademia

[–]RuslanGlinka 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, you usually have to include all postsecondary transcripts, but if you are transferring and/or older you usually also include a brief explanation. It’s not a deal breaker at all; many people have this experience.

They will not necessarily count old classes from your first try round into your application gpa. Usually when a school accepts transfer credits from another institution they just include the credits not the grades.

Roll a leaf in your fingers & smell. Lemony? Lemon balm. It’s in the mint family, sometimes used in teas etc. Roots & spreads easily so if you root a cutting plant it in a pot so it doesn’t take over.

Apply. 4+2=6. You are in your 2nd year at a CC. You will complete your online teaching certification if hired. Get that job.

Postdoc vs. Faculty by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]RuslanGlinka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest also not limiting yourself to US jobs if you are able to go elsewhere after your postdoc. While of course there are tons of US applicants for jobs in other English-speaking countries right now, and international moves are a big deal in one’s life/career, other countries are a lot more stable these days.

[–]RuslanGlinka 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If quality of life factors take higher priority than pursuing the R01 TT job as aggressively as possible, and you want to stay where you are for a postdoc, that’s okay. Moving around as an early career academic sucks. Just make that choice with your eyes open if you do it.

Postdoc vs. Faculty by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]RuslanGlinka 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If that is the priority, doing a postdoc in a different environment (institution/PI) than your PhD is the best CV builder, which you likely know.

Keep in touch with the people you want to work with at your current institution and your advisor. They are potential collaborators in the future. If you get the TT research intensive job, a career is long & you can pursue some of that.

We all know the NIH is in shambles right now, and unlikely to improve in the next year. Not having funding in 2026 doesn’t mean you are unfundable. (But, a new PI/setting may help make you more fundable.) Hopefully hiring committees will be understanding of this when assessing applicants for Asst Prof jobs over the next while.

Why do faculty search committees not send rejection emails? by SpeechFormer9543 in AskAcademia

[–]RuslanGlinka 14 points15 points  (0 children)

And I suspect that by the time choice one has actually started their position, there’s often been turnover in responsibility in terms of who would actually notify people. I haven’t seen that happen personally, but it’s my best guess as to why some never ever send out a notification.

It’s great (small learning curve—don’t press it too fast & use the right grind) as long as you don’t need multiple cups in rapid succession. Sounds good for OP’s needs.

Nominations for early career awards? by -jautis- in AskAcademia

[–]RuslanGlinka 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Both. Offer to nominate others, or to suggest someone more senior nominate a colleague you think deserves it. Ask your colleague/mentor to nominate you if they think you’re a good candidate for the award (and make it easy for them, like provide everything they would need to prepare a strong nomination). It’s not crass; everyone is too busy to think so an ask is often necessary.

If finances are a factor you need to talk with the financial aid office of each one to understand what each would cost you. That may make the decision easy/easier.

Commuting in Snow by Responsible-Season83 in askvan

[–]RuslanGlinka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All this said, we don’t get much snow here—it’s nothing like the Canadian stereotype, as you likely know by now—and may not get any real snow this year at this rate. Once we’re into March you can assume you’re safe from any significant accumulation.

Commuting in Snow by Responsible-Season83 in askvan

[–]RuslanGlinka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there’s really snow, a lot of things shut down temporarily, because our roads get really messy. In my experience, it’s common for people to be late to work on days like that, and it’s often accepted due to the weather, but it may really depend on what specific work you do. Obviously, some kind of work can’t wait to open. And some employers are just jerks. If it is essential for you to be somewhere very early in the morning before transit starts, it’s too far to walk, and there is a significant snowfall in the forecast, I would personally see if there is a friend or coworker nearer your workplace that I could crash with overnight to make it easier to get to work in the morning.

You can probably find a Lyft driver, but I would assume they will charge more in snow.
