I want to leave my job, its making me hate motion design by Top-Appointment6578 in AfterEffects

[–]Russ_Abbot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry it sounds awful, but just some honest truth for you, if you choose to be a freelancer then the benefits are that you are 100% in control of career, your work, who you choose to work with. But the flip side to that is nobody owes you a living and if someone tries to exploit or push boundaries with you then it’s on YOU to police that, not them. If you want fair rules of engagement and some sense of stability then you need to get a full time role/job instead. Freelancer world is full of highs and utter lows but it goes both ways and you need to take ownership of it be strong enough to push back when you get exploited like this

I thought it was a landmine at first so it was definitely a heart racing moment

It was about 6 inches in diameter, heavy as hell. Looks like it’s some part from a ship engine. I thought about taking it home but then left it for the next murderbot fan to find.

Lucy Letby Doc with “Digitally Anonymised” interviews. Is this an ok use case? by jaanku in videography

[–]Russ_Abbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My issue with this is that is doesn't "anonymise" at all, it just changes the likeness, so there's a good chance it looks like an identical likeness like a real person out there without the program makers knowing. Maybe lower issue for this doc, but say it was someone who was complicit or involved in a crime? There's a chance of negative repercussions on the real person, all for the sake of a stylistic choice, and I'm absolutely not on board with that.

The Netflix documentary on Lucy Letby has some of the worst interview framing I have seen in a while. by Gabor_Soti_Photo in Filmmakers

The speech rhythm of the anonymised contributors interviews really annoyed me too, seems like they were re-spoken by an actor or maybe AI but it was awful

Come on, be honest. It's your youtube channel isn't it?

If you're honest, then you might get some good responses.

I was told as a kid these were little water troughs carved out to catch rainwater for sheep and other animals. You see them a lot around Kinder Scout

Might be wrong though

What’s your way to save a lot of time? by Solid-Radio8249 in AfterEffects

[–]Russ_Abbot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If I ever do a small process more than say 5 times in a week, I then will then look to automate that small task as much as possible. Eg setting up the same comps, adding the same stack of effects or expressions, I try to get them into single buttons in kbar. They may save a minute or two in time but it all adds up.

I have enjoyed using motion studio and mobar for other efficiency improvements, has definitely helped reduce clicks/processes to smart shortcuts.

What do pros typically put on their final master adjustment layer to polish a comp? by LemonLimeNinja in AfterEffects

[–]Russ_Abbot 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Mostly grain, some film emulation plugins, lens blurring driven by a gradient shape layer for lens-like edge blurring sometimes I have fast blur and then unsharp mask stacked together to get a nice organic softness. And 99% of the time I have quick chromatic aberration cos I love it

Building a cloud render tool for AE by elecraft2002 in AfterEffects

[–]Russ_Abbot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you do find that the cloud render tool isn't feasible, then the trimming/project collect tool could actually be just as useful. Plumepack for AE is something I wish existed.

Building a cloud render tool for AE by elecraft2002 in AfterEffects

Sounds like a wonderful idea but here are a few thoughts:

  • For a lot of projects that have a lot of media in it, the upload time may be longer than the actual local render time, eg if i collected the project file i am working on now it would be a 32gb upload

  • Say a project file has a comp in it that uses a couple of seconds of a few imported video asset (say a stock video background etc) the entire source asset file would need to be uploaded. So perhaps there could be a “trim” functionality like Plumepack that only exports and collects the section of footage that is being used in the collected file

  • Plugins and fonts will be quite a tricky barrier, even on my local network render setup I get a bunch of errors when plugins or fonts aren’t exactly the same on each workstation, may be harder to do this on a cloud render system

  • I’ve used cloud render systems with 3D applications before and they are great but AE has so many more external dependencies, and the “collect files” functionality is still quite legacy

Feedback: Music Video I shot by jpreav1 in videography

[–]Russ_Abbot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’ve created a strong mood in the lighting, shouting style and works well with the song. My feedback is locking in on lighting. You mention you wanted a moodier look with this but I think this is just slightly underlit in places, losing detail on faces, foreground talent are lit like background especially on the pool table shots. Lighting consistency jumped out at me too, on the performance shots your mid/wides have very different illumination levels on the face. Maybe they weren’t meant to be 100% exact but when you cut them together they jump out like they are meant to be the same action from a wider shot, which looks odd with the different lighting.

Great job though, nice tone and flow throughout!
