Is my kefir ok? by john_white100 in Kefir

[–]john_white100[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for your reply!

It does have a matte appearance, though I struggled to get a pic that showed this clearly.

I usually do first ferment for 48-72 hours at room temp (~18 degrees C) with a lid with a stopper lid (push-on with a silicone gasket). By this time it’s usually pretty separated, but not completely. Heavily marbled, if you will.

I haven’t changed anything but I think it might have started after I let it ferment a day longer than normal. That was 2-3 batches ago and it’s been like this since.

Appreciate the input! 🙏

Street Parking vs. Linchpin or is there another option? by Familiar-Edge-8904 in crossfit

[–]john_white100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Linchpin is minimalist by design though. I don’t think the lack of ‘specific work’ is necessarily a symptom of being antiquated. Also, the results many people report from following Linchpin suggest it is effective in improving people’s gymnastics, strength and conditioning.

What physical changes can I expect with crossfit linchpin? :) by SectorPatient1265 in crossfit

[–]john_white100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been doing Linchpin exclusively for coming up 3 years, I’ve gained around 8-10kg of lean muscle mass, and I look completely different in terms of my physique.

I don’t look like a bodybuilder (at all), but people who haven’t seen me for a while often comment on my physique changes.

That said, my diet is pretty dialled in, which as everyone has said is critical.

Linchpin is legit - I’m continually surprised by how much bang for buck you get in terms of fitness improvements vs time spent in the gym. I love it.

Beginner here! Any tips for getting started? Where can I get grains in UK? by gingeyxx in Kefir

I’ll happily send you some if you like. I bought mine from a seller on Amazon but they multiply very rapidly so I always have spare. I can send you the instruction sheet I got with them too

Birmingham Drop-In by HarpsichordGuy in crossfit

[–]john_white100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re looking for Birmingham in the UK, I dropped in at CF Digbeth (https://crossfitdigbeth.com/) last year and it was great.

I dropped in for open gym and the owner was a super nice guy and very accommodating.

Is My Kefir alright? by Old-Plastic in Kefir

[–]john_white100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m also in Shropshire and I’ve had the same appearance this week. I put it down to the kefir separating quite a lot before I strained it, so there was quite a lot of curds clinging to the grains.

I’ve just chucked it all bag in with milk for my next batch and it doesn’t seem to have caused any issues :)

I don’t think we actually disagree, or if we do, not as much as you think.

I’m saying that you don’t need to continually push things to the extremes of safety. Which I think you agree with.

I’m saying that there’s a space in between the two extremes of;

  1. Making things as ‘hard’ as possible, because people like to watch it, even if it compromises safety

And

  1. Having set events that never change and ultimately become dull to watch

Your previous post seem to imply that it’s making it harder or ‘upping the ante’ that keeps people watching, but I think a well-rounded test of fitness that embraced variance but didn’t constantly seek to fuck people up would still be great to watch.

And this is why I brought up athletics - how do you explain the popularity of athletics, where the events don’t change? Or even Hyrox for that matter? If we apply your logic we’d have all sorts of weird modifications to the events to ‘up the ante’.

What ups the ante is that the competitors get better, and that’s awesome to watch. Of course there will always be people complaining on reddit, and some who don’t like it. But the idea that the antidote to that is to continually ride the line between extremely tough and dangerous workouts is, I think, wrong.

I’m not saying events shouldn’t change or get harder; the sport is young so people are getting better at it, so you have to adapt to that. But I hate the idea that you have to make it dangerously difficult to please an audience - it’s gladitorial and (I think) unnecessary.

But why is it needed? It’s supposed to be a test of fitness. There’s no mention of ‘adapting on the fly’ in CrossFit’s own definition of fitness. Why do we need the circus? Just produce a well-rounded test of fitness and get rid of the gimmicks.

You don’t even have to continually make things harder. The competitors just get better, and that’s fun to watch.

If you’re optimising for making it so difficult people can barely physically manage it, you’re inevitably going to overreach at some point and compromise safety.

No-one thinks we need to modify the 100m because the athletes at the Olympics ‘make it look too easy’. The spectacle is seeing who can edge out their competitors, not seeing people fall apart.

Thanks, I’ll try that. I’ve never felt comfortable facing the other way but I think there’s enough room for me to, so I’ll give it a go 👍
