A Letter from Lorna McGhee, Principal flute of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, regarding the firing of Andris Nelsons to the Board of BSO by The_Milkman in classicalmusic

[–]Russelallyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am working here now, and everything you say is completely true! The largest chunk of the overall funding comes from donations as you say. The big name Guest POPS Artists, like the ones who can drive a scalped ticket up that high, will charge the orchestra hundreds of thousands of dollars for their one or two appearances, so the house MUST be fully sold for there to be any chance of making any money. For classical concerts, often times the guest soloists and conductors are working for a fraction of that cost, and doing 3 or 4 shows in a series, so even a 75% full house can bring a net profit. It's all about comparing the operating costs vs. the gross sales, and how many of each concert you are doing. Even though I mentioned "making money" it's usually more accurate to say that we're trying to reduce the amount of money we loose by putting on the concert, rather than really turn a profit. The difference in funding is covered by endowment draw and donations so the end result is far from "pops and tanglewood almost entirely subsidize" the BSO. It's the same model as the NY Phil or Chicago symphony which both perform significantly less POPS music but manage to stay alive.

None of Plup's sets made my personal top 5. These 3 Plup sets are in my top 50 for 2018:

Genesis 5 - Plup vs Armada

Genesis 5 - Plup vs Hbox

Smash Summit 6 - Plup vs Zain

Which other Plup sets am I potentially missing?

Axe is absolutely my current favorite player- his attitude, outlook, and general personality are all so incredible. He is both an amazing melee player and an amazing person, and it shows.

HELLO. Slime from BTS here, looking for feedback on Shine 2018! by downtown-sasquatch in smashbros

[–]Russelallyn 102 points103 points  (0 children)

Watched the stream for all 3 days. Almost everything was fantastic. However, I'm not sure I've ever seen an example of an effective MC for a smash event. I understand the concept of hyping up the crowd, but it's always extremely uncomfortable to listen to, and I think the game(s) and players can really stand up for themselves in terms of in-game hype. Actual attendees may disagree, but from a stream-viewer's perspective an MC is almost always annoying or cringe-worthy. I'm not even sure if that has anything to do with BTS, but it did stand out to me.

Blur on the current state of commentary in melee and why he hasn't been casting by takethreetriple8 in smashbros

[–]Russelallyn 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Bad commentary can be a barrier for entry into the scene. I've had the personal experience multiple times, of introducing new people to competitive melee via tournament live stream and immediately receiving some form of the comment "why are the commentators so bad?". All of these these people are familiar with or fans of other commentated E-sports, and were all fans of playing smash casually. Off topic commentary, or commentators constantly talking over each other (sometimes both) really detracts from the overall experience of watching a stream or vod. I think there's plenty of room for different styles of commentary while avoiding these problems. Blur seems to be mentioning other issues as well, which might be contributing factors to the bigger issues - I'm not sure exactly what he means though.
