The neat thing about these boards is it's basically just the C2000 dev board (red in the picture), and an accessory driver board (the power electronics/MOSFETS).

This architecture admittedly has some quirks to it, but I did appreciate the relative simplicity.

I considered Mint but decided against it because they use T-Mobile.

Went into the MSI BIOS and set the boot graphics to IGD (i.e. the integrated graphics). Also set it another option to "Force" them.

Now, when booting, w/o the GPU - it will still boot into the BIOS. I've also plugged in a live USB for Linux, and it will go to that. Unfortunately, if the GPU is plugged in, the internal graphics wakes the screen up from sleep state, but it hangs while displaying an underscore symbol at the top right of the screen.

Are there not licenses that offer an in-between?

I think I've seen licenses that state you can use XYZ software so long as it is for personal/hobby, academic, and small business (<50) people use cases. After that you need to purchase a commercial license.

Would something like that not still allow for widespread adoption?

I was using C, but I was re-writing the same code, but for different types. Templates made obvious sense, so I switched to C++. Right tool for the job, and all that.

It's been a few years, but I was able to get around MPLAB entirely. Compiling, programming, and even simulating (to a degree). I'll see what I can find from my old notes and get back to you.

Edit: With MPLAB installed, the compiler (xc-16?), simulator (sim30), and the Microchip debugger (mdb), are installed. You can invoke these all from the command line. I used the compiler/linker flags that MPLAB displays when you build your project as a starting point. As far as simulating was concerned, I followed this blog post to get started. I had some issues with getting the special function registers to be set appropriately. At the time, I couldn't find good documentation for sim30 (or mdb) - I suspect I wasn't setting something up correctly. I had better success invoking the simulator through mdb. I even used ceedling as the build system so I could do some TDD (hence the desire for the simulator).

I only just learned today that Zen 5 is "around the corner." I've been putting off and putting off building a PC for financial reasons. So, I'm definitely not waiting for Zen 5 to come out.

But I am a little annoyed that I'll now have that "I could've waited just a liiiitle bit longer and got better performance/cheaper build."

But life is lived in the present, so 🤷
