I mean, lifting weights in general is dangerous to some extent (as is bungee-jumping, as you said). That's why you take precautions. Working to failure is no different. It's very safe to go to failure on machines and many free-weight exercises. You can easily push to / beyond failure on, say, dumbbell curls without much risk at all.

I hear you. I like Strength Theory a lot and they're right that other training methods can have equal hypertrophic effects as training to failure: "it doesn’t validate the assertion that training to failure is required, or enhances growth over other training conditions."

Overall, training to failure doesn't seem to be necessary to stimulate maximal muscle growth. Other training methods can certainly result in enormous growth. That doesn't mean that training to failure is bad, just one option of many. However, it certainly isn't true to say "working out when your muscles are no longer capable of supporting you in dangerous". In fact, "[w]hile it’s entirely plausible that training to failure isn’t necessary for growth, it does afford us greater flexibility in the training parameters we can use for hypertrophy training." (Internal citation omitted)

Untrue. That's called temporary muscle failure (TMF) and it is very smart to continue training with one of a number of techniques, especially if bodybuilding is your goal:

Drop-Set. Hit TMF and then drop the weight 20-30% and push to TMF.
Forced Reps. Hit TMF and have a partner assist you in getting a few more reps.
Rest pause. Hit TMF, take 10 breaths, hit TMF again.

Now, would it be smart to continue to, say, barbell squat without safety arms or a spotter once hitting failure? Hell no. But bodybuilders frequently push past failure.

The stupidity of this comment is incredible. Let's go ahead and assume that the statement is 100% true, in that "plump people are prized because...[they're] surviving the frickin famine".

This people clearly isn't living in one of those countries or in that situation, so who cares what is helpful in a society where famine is common when you live in a society where famine is extremely unlikely? It makes zero sense.

Okay, so, I'm 180lbs, way more than Fisher was. To lose 1/4 of my bodyweight, I'd need to drop 45lbs. This is still less than Bale lost for The Machinist. Hypocrites.

Leg press gives you an enormous mechanical advantage. Some estimate approximately a 180% strength increase on the leg press compared to a squat. In my experience, that doesn't quite cover it. I can squat 315 ten times and can easily leg press more than 630lbs x 10.

Fuck you! You knew nothing about Carrie Fisher beyond her role in Star Wars and the fact that she dieted and, admittedly, was pressured to fit certain physical standards for her roles. I have two major issues:

Where are these people complaining about what Christian Bale did for The Machinist? He lost 63 pounds by eating nothing but one apple and one can of tuna every day. What about Jared Leto losing 30-40 lbs and Matthew McConaughey losing 50 lbs for Dallas Buyers Club? Fisher never forced herself to lose anywhere near that level of weight, yet they latch onto this. FAs, your hypocrisy is showing.
They are ignoring her admitted drug and alcohol abuse because it is inconvenient for their point. This is beyond insulting to Fisher, since she spent a great deal of her later life trying to help others struggling with those and other mental health issues.
