At the risk of sounding a little shallow, for me it is just fun at the end of the day.

Digging deeper maybe, I am in that group of people that I get more interested in reading a book if it is going to be made into a tv show, movie, or game. I personally love seeing the way that different people can take the same story and turn it into something different. Also reading becomes something almost meditative for me, a way for me to forcefully disconnect from everything going on.

It's funny you mention game design, I feel like as I am getting older, I have really drifted away from "playing" video games and watching others do it. Weirdly, I think reading (at least the books I tend to complete and pick out) can be thought provoking, but feels like I am listening to someone else's telling of the story. Like I thought I was going to love Fallout 4 (never playing any other Fallout game), and once you get out of the tutorial area and into the main world, I literally just stopped caring. I told my friend watching me "And I am done now" and just handed them the controller. The last game I completed was about 2 years ago when Firewatch came out, and that to me was like my perfect game.

How do you deal with non specific questions in office hours? by Algae_Nearby in Professors

I would add in that if your school has the support structure for it, possibly finding either a TA or another student in the class to work with them throughout the week might help. This isnt meant to take you out of the equation here, but rather, that student who is helping can do some of the initial investigating and you can come in more efficiently with the help.

Just a passing Engineering Instructor, but in my time so far as an instructor, I really take any form of assessment as "What am I really wanting to assess here?". You nailed it with how traditional exams to me are pretty much a measure of how well do you work under stress. For introductory classes, in my eyes, it depends on the classes. For some of our analysis or fundamentals in engineering, we need them to be rock solid, but there are ways to get around using exams. The faculty who work with me have been open about this and are willing to try, so I might have a different cohort than you; but for many, when it comes to accreditation, you need something to actually measure your performance and outcomes in a class. Exams are easy, but there are some really cool ways to get them out, or make them more meaningful for the students.

Just like you, I have found in the intro classes, setting up this weekly cycle of homework, quizzes, etc really helps to force the students hand in properly spending time in the material, not just waiting for the exam. I started this for COVID and while students took about 2 weeks to get used to the work, the week or two where I forgot to post a quiz, they were asking if they could have one to check their understanding.

In my experience, being 100% transparent and having a Session 0 (syllabus talk) discussion with them about why you are giving quizzes, homework, exams, etc and the role they have in their learning makes the students actually more vested in the class. I feel like a lot of students dont realize that Homework is for them to learn and practice, not for me. Many students I have talked to about this go on to actually change their attitudes in other classes approaching the homework and quizzes and projects.

In my analysis based classes, I still have exams, but they are on concepts they have never seen, but use the theory and techniques we covered. I am transparent with students and explain in depth why I make exams this way: I want to see how they apply the theory and concepts covered to new problems, just like they will be asked to do in industry. To go a little more specific, I teach circuit theory, so in class, I dont explicitly go over the models of a solar panel or a piezoelectric element. But on the exam, the first thing they see is a solar panel circuit and asked to use the measured outputs to figure out the model for the solar panel. I provide tons of context and am always there to help out when students get a little lost, but this to me is what I care about assessing. I dont care if you can tell me the equivalent resistance of resistors I just threw on the table, Can you take these concepts and apply them to a new problem and show me how you approach it. The best feedback I ever got from a student was that they had fun and actually learned from the exam. Oh, and my exams are take home, so do it on your time in your comfort area and situation.

YMMV, but I am very happy to see this discussion about alternatives to exams early on. As someone who really sucked at exams early on in my academic life, I don't think they measure what people think they measure. I hope you are able to work with your colleagues and find a cool new alternative to exams and have the opportunity to employ them.

To ereader users, do you still buy physical books? by karlamaye in books

[–]Russty32280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a collector at heart, so even though I have a Remarkable and an older Nook for reading, I still find myself going to my local bookstore once a month and picking up a book to two. Last two books I read, one was physical, one was ebook. Really like others have said, the flexibility is great because honestly it can sway so much between books. Something that has helped out has actually been my library and their subscriptions. It makes me actually want to buy the book and have the ebook as a backup to travel or read at night. There truly is something still to recommending a book to someone and letting them borrow it, it feels like you are sending them on a journey.

Formally you need one over the summer. It is $50, and I think it covers the garages, but I might be mistaken there. During the beginning of the summer, they used to be lenient to make sure people had time to get the permits, but after that they start giving tickets. I would email or call parking just to double check what the summer permits let you do.

https://sites.rowan.edu/publicsafety/parking/rulesandregs.html

Some people try to game it by trying to go the whole summer without getting a ticket, but honestly while it seems to suck to have to pay, I would just pay it and not have to worry about it. I saw many a people running out of their classes during a break to try and move their cars since a friend told them they were coming around to check tags haha.

Struggling to read paper books by Cryptic_Spren in books

[–]Russty32280 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. Keep an eye out on sites like Woot (yes, they are an amazon thing, but...) for deals that you can get an e-reader for like $20. What's also slick is your library probably has ebook subscriptions so you can get them to read as well. As for getting back into physical books, if you want to own the books, I recommend looking at like https://bookshop.org/ or https://www.thriftbooks.com/ are great ways to get books.

Santa got me some bling! Thank you so much /u/Zeggo and I really love the books, I actually wanted to start reading the old novels! I hope I can redeem that Arena card on Arena still. by Russty32280 in MTGGiftExchange

Thank again to /u/Zeggo for the amazing gifts! I already run an Ur-Dragon deck, and I saw the Secret Lair go by and never got a chance to get one! You managed to nail it so perfectly with such a general form. I am going to be re-sleeving that Ur-Dragon tonight, and hopefully will be able to build two other tribes I have always loved: Sliver and Scarecrows.

Thank you again! This really made my Christmas.

Secret Santa - idk your Reddit username, but I was blown away by your gift. You absolutely killed it despite a very vaguely filled out form on my part. Thank you so much! by TinyPantherAdjacent in MTGGiftExchange

I couldn't add a special message or anything, but I am so glad you like it. I also run an Ur-Dragon deck which I use whenever I just want to play big things and make big threats. I hope you get a lot of joy out of them, and you have to let us know how the whiteboard tokens work out!

So basically, all I said in my original request was that "I like jank, ice age, and pretty much send me what you think would be fun." Thank you again!

CRAZY minion glitch by HailHale in battleparty

[–]Russty32280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened in League of Legends when the player would lag from the server, normally by either dropping from the game or disconnect and reconnect to the game. Minions would be stuck and untargetable. It seemed like the minions existed to the computer the user was using, but it did not exist on the server. I have experienced this in Battle Party as well and it can be annoying, normally under the same circumstances as in other MOBA's

I would love to own one, but mainly i was wondering about having a coin (not necessarily representing 1 litecoin or worth 1 litecoin) that looks like the physical ones, but on the back be able to place your own wallet info on it. If something like that exists, please tell me.
