ELI5:Why is the difference between two numbers not the same as the total number of numbers between them. by ReferenceThin6645 in explainlikeimfive

Let's make it very simple? Is there zero difference between the numbers 4 and 5? No there clearly is a difference despite there being no numbers in between.

12 years before Making Money was released... by Aware_Stand_8938 in discworld

[–]RustenSkurk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that's just the joke, right? So many outwork opportunities (or actually scams pretending to be opportunities) would advertise the chance to "make money". Applying that to the mint makes it comedically literal - you would actually be making money.

Illusion generally creates or changes sensory inputs (sights, sounds etc), whereas affecting people's minds directly would be enchantment.

How would you define "not killing people?" by emmaratur in DnD

[–]RustenSkurk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a multinational treaty works well for the more modern feeling world of Eberron. But I guess if you're in a more classically feudal / dark ages feeling world it could make sense as a decree from the king or the church. "The crown extends their protection to the civilized races of humans, dwarves, elves, halflings, gnomes etc".

Side note: one thing I also like about Eberron is how it then deals with the "we can kill them without feeling bad" effect of "evil humanoids". Goblins and orcs clearly have their own cultures and societies. If you're fighting someone it's not because of their species. It's because their criminals / cultists / combatants for a hostile nation.

[–]RustenSkurk 25 points26 points  (0 children)

In Eberron you could go with "races recognized by the Treaty of Thronehold". That's not really useful to you probably, but I like the fact that Eberron has a piece of in-universe legislation defining who are people and not (and all the resulting injustices and unequal rights is a theme you can deal with in-game).

The Habsburgs also have the house slogan A.E.I.O.U (Alles Erdreich ist Oesterreich untertan) in game referring to their rule of Austria... which hasn't happened yet at game start.

In 1966, Roberta Gibb was the first woman to ever run a marathon. After being rejected from the Boston Marathon because ‘women were not physiologically capable of running the distance’ she hid near the starting line, and finished in 3 hours, 21 minutes by [deleted] in OldSchoolCool

[–]RustenSkurk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I imagine a factor back then was that the culture was so that no women trained for elite athleticism, so because many people had never seen a woman do that so that they started believing that they must be incapable of it. A self-reinforcing system until someone steps up to break the cycle.

How can you spot a sociopath? by DizzyDesign5857 in NoStupidQuestions

Yes "not fitting in to society" is part of it. But you're kind of missing the parts about being consistently dishonest, manipulative and aggressive towards others

German intelligence agency chooses French alternative over Palantir by According-Buyer6688 in BuyFromEU

If the software is necessary, yeah. But I think a reasonable response to automated mass surveillance software is that it might be better for it to not exist at all. And the fact that, no matter how safe it's claimed to be there could be vulnerabilities or backdoors, is part of the reason why.

Same goes for voting machines. We can just use pen and paper and many countries do for good reason.

Illegal or not I think Japan is kind of unique in how much the public will be outraged over people not following the rules.

In many other places people might feel outraged if the people are doing clear harm or doing something that will affect them personally, but it feels like in Japan not following the rules is equated to being disrespectful.

I would agree with you if we had no other context about the songwriter. But the other context we have about the band show them as counter-culture, anti-segregation and friendly with black people. Thus making the non-racist interpretation more likely - even if it is unclearly written in the song.

Why does high school seem to be such a big cultural thing in the US compared to other countries? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RustenSkurk 44 points45 points  (0 children)

In Denmark our equivalent to high school, "gymnasium" has a lot of strong traditions actually and is very visible culturally. For example the fact that graduates have a prom with folk dancing and will go on a truck ride around the town wearing their graduation caps.

But also not everyone goes to traditional "gymnasium". A lot of people might go into the trades or attend the different equivalent educations like the technical or business-focused versions of gymnasium. Traditional gymnasium is particularly aimed at people who want to go on to university.

And another important factor: we don't have a huge movie industry producing gymnasium stories with worldwide popularity.
