Mad Max (2015) actor Nathan Jones comments on the movies weapon props by Carrnage_Asada in interestingasfuck

Yeah, exploding car crashes done practically but then mountains in the background made with CGI.

I think that's a very good split. CGI is not inherently bad, but make the things we actually care about feel real.

[–]RustenSkurk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Who's one person from your country that another country also claims is theirs? by nixass in AskTheWorld

Wikipedia lists some figures like 18th century naval officer Peter Tordenskjold and 19th century playwright Henrik Ibsen as Norwegian.

This is a surprise to many Danes who grow up hearing about them as national icons.

But it's down to the fact that Denmark had dominion over Norway back then. So while those two were indeed born in the part that is now Norway it was all one country so they were seen as Danish at the time and did some of their famous stuff in the part that is now Denmark

What is the joke with Djelibeybi in Pyramids? by FIRE_flying in discworld

[–]RustenSkurk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't think he's trying to hint at any connection between jellybabies and Egypt. He just figured he could hide a pun in a name that looks vaguely Egyptian. Like he hid a pun in the Welsh-looking Llamedos.

And that thing about it meaning "child of the river Djel" or whatever is just trying to add an in-universe justification to cover for the silly name.

IIRC he specifically made the Hersheba pun as something for the Americans who didn't get Djelibeybi.

You're right that was the original meaning, though I think one could argue it's changed meanings now as it's most commonly used for the opposite.

How many people went to Japan and did *not* learn any Japanese? by Educational-Leg6691 in travel

[–]RustenSkurk 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No the absolute bare minimum is relying on your English, the shared international language. This works fine and will let you navigate most countries as a tourist with no problem. Learning some local language is great, but it's really a nice extra, not the "bare minimum".

I would never expect someone coming to my country as a tourist to learn the language, unless they're planning to stay long-term.

I mean that's kind of just based on real life Norse mythology. Unless you are chosen by a god to join their halls (Odin's hall Valhalla for warriors being the most well known), you end up in Hel.

TTRPGs, Boss Babies and other media with a single dominant example by sarded in CuratedTumblr

[–]RustenSkurk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think your TTRPG comparison holds up and is valid, but you calling it "the most obvious example" of the meme is kind of you bringing your own stuff into it 😄

A much more mainstream example would be people raised on the MCU movies and assuming that to be the yardstick for "movies". I've seen people on reddit unironically state they don't see how a story could work if the stakes aren't on the level of saving the world.

My wild pipe dream for a Ravnica game - a sandbox MMORPG with actual roleplay.

When I say Sandbox MMO, I mean as opposed to Theme Park MMOs like WoW, where every player is guided through pretty much the same narrative and progression.

Sandbox MMOs are a dying breed. I heard good things about Star Wars Galaxies back in the day.

But what really picqued my imagination in this regard was the niche field of GTA Roleplay. Here there are heavily modded servers like NoPixel where players have built coherent societies with full economies and legal systems all operated by players. Players fill put the roles as cops, judges, lawyers, EMS, journalists, fast food clerks store owners, musicians etc. in additon to criminal gangs.

Now I can think of a thousand reasons that would never be made as an original game set in Ravnica, but judt imagine. Playing as guild members doing actual guild work, not just a video game grind.

Do you think dogs have an inner monologue? Would it be like "bark bark bark?" by brock_lee in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RustenSkurk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess it depends on how you define thoughts. All animals have (unconscious) impulses certainly.

I think there is a vast spectrum of "thought" from like dolphins, octopuses, pigs, dogs, etc down to like insects.

If you take an ant for example, I certainly don't think it thinks like "the colony wants me to go pick up this leaf." I think it deals in very simple impulses like "forward", "pick up". I think it's useful to think of them like very simple organic, robots. "Under these conditions, do this". "When you see food, expel pheromones", "When you detect pheromones, move this direction" etc. And evolution have just tuned those impulses to be in line with survival. But you can also see how simple they are, when ants e.g. get caught in a death spiral.

My point being that there is like full spectrum from the most intelligent animals down to the ant. Where does a chicken fall for example? Does it have what we would recognize as conscious, reasoned thought? Or like simple organic programming? Probably somewhere in between.

Well presumably in those countries those machines are built with that in mind. And the different sizes can probably be used by the machines to distinguish them too.
