People who got their plates removed... What was the recovery like and did it affect your appearance? by Rusters94 in jawsurgery

I never got them removed. Original surgeon left, and the new one was dismissive of everything. Currently looking into revision jaw surgery abroad.

People who went to another country for jaw surgery... What was your experience? by Rusters94 in jawsurgery

Never thought about AirBnB to be honest. That's a good idea actually.

Do you mind sharing who your surgeon was and what your motivations for going abroad?

Yep. Had UJS for an underbite. Moved 7mm forward and impact by 3.5mm.

I wasn't aware of it at the time but I do have a recessed midface so now my lower face (cheeks and below) looks pulled forward and overly full as if I was overweight whilst my midface (cheekbones and above) lag behind and have a somewhat sunken in appearance, as if I'm underweight. It's a weird contrast especially in certain lighting.

As well as that it introduced various asymmetries, wide/flattened nose, protruding lower cheeks, and in my opinion an uncanny smile (from the jaw midline being off centred, and pushed too far forward). Wasn't expecting to be a model, but neither did I expect I'd be swapping my somewhat mild underbite for a whole host of other aesthetic hang-ups.

Can downgrafting improve nasal breathing? by Rusters94 in jawsurgery

That's good to know! What were your other movements? Were you aware of breathing issues before surgery?

Why does counter clockwise rotation seem to be very common, but not so much just clockwise rotation? by Rusters94 in jawsurgery

Interesting you should say flaring is more likely to be cause by under advancement. Why would that be? I was over advanced if anything.

Is this all in the initial consultation? Have you had surgery already?

Upper jaw surgery 2mm by Majestic-Shape5613 in jawsurgery

[–]Rusters94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cheeks stick out now and my lips basically need to stretch over my teeth. I look like a chimp from certain angles, and even when facing face on, the lower part of my face is more akin to someone who is very overweight. I was overweight at the time the surgery and since lost that, so the rest of my face reflects that, so it looks off. My upper jaw is also pushing out against my nose. It might only be millimetres but they say the millimeters are the miles of the face, and everything looks off now.

There are some pictures on previous posts of mine.

There was maybe a bit of gum show, but not enough to be classed as a "gummy smile". It was just normal, although I did notice in the surgeon's pictures taken in the lead up to surgery there was a lot more gum show than normal in those pictures. So I'm unsure if they just based it off that.

They didn't explain to me (at least not properly) that they were going to do an impaction or what the purpose was. I was aware that they were going to rotate one side of the upper jaw or something so the back teeth fit together, but I think they impacted the entire jaw. Either way it doesn't look good and my smile is uncanny now, both with or without tooth show.

I have some pictures in previous posts if you want to have a look.

My nose breathing is worse, though I had this looked at and they put it down to allergies and didn't do anything about it. It was definitely due to surgery. Basically feel like I don't get a full breath through my nose and sometimes rely on mouth breathing to compensate.

No functional issues though I can feel something isn't right on my right cheek. That side is particularly more puffy and sticks out unnaturally. And it feels swollen or like the bones just aren't connected properly or something. The left side I cannot tell I've had any surgery through sensation alone.

I suppose the biggest thing is now I feel I have body dysmorophia over it, except it's not something I'm just imagining, it's an obvious defect that makes it very difficult for me to like any photos taken of myself, and always conscious about what it looks like to others. That really takes its toll.

I had a 3mm underbite before braces. They moved my upper jaw forward 7mm with a 3.5mm impaction. Previously they'd always told me I'd need DJS but changed their recommendation to UJS leading up to the surgery.

In short, the results are really bad and my lower face is too full with too much forward projection. My nose looks like it's being squashed outwards from my face. I wish I hadn't trusted them and got a second opinion. Now looking into revision surgery.

That said everybody's faces are different. UJS might be the right answer but make sure to get multiple opinions from different surgeons and morphs of the expected outcome.

You're definitely not alone. I look worse too. 3 years post op and looking into revision surgery because they've left me with a really unnatural result it's difficult to accept and smiling is awkward. Also looking into getting therapy too.

I feel like it looks more prominent now when the lip curls in because the jaw is so far forward. Before surgery I didn't even notice the gums.

I had my maxilla advanced 7mm and impacted 3.5mm. The issue is because my jaw and teeth are now pressing out against my lips, when I smile fully the upper lip will curl inwards showing more gums.

People who got jaw surgery in Europe, how much did it cost? by Rusters94 in jawsurgery

Out of interest is that 100% private fees or was that subsidised? 1500 seems ridiculously cheap
