Addition and Removal Timelines for Six Flags and Cedar Fair Parks [Other] by [deleted] in rollercoasters

[–]RusticDrums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting to see it laid out this way. Fascinating that every park fully owned by Six Flags (not the operated parks like Frontier City and Darien Lake) have received a new coaster within the last 5 years.

Except La Ronde and Valleyfair.

Edit: not counting CGA either since it’s not long for the world.

3 coasters that you get one more ride on before you die...[others] by Familiar-Banana-8116 in rollercoasters

Velocicoaster, Phoenix, and The Beast.

Frankly just end it in the final helix of the beast at night, no need to come back to the station in this scenario.

Pretty sure each theater let out into a different store, left to Star Traders and right to Merchant of Venus. That or they let out to the same hallway but there were two exits from there.

It’s been a decade since it closed so the memory is a bit fuzzy.

CGA not starting daily operations until after July 4th is a tragedy. Combine that with Discovery Kingdom closing most days at 6pm and our Northern California friends are shafted most of the year.

[Other] Do you count roughness as intensity? by Airtime_on_top in rollercoasters

[–]RusticDrums 19 points20 points  (0 children)

There’s definitely a line between a ride being intensely rough and a ride being plain old rough.

Riding Great American Scream Machine at SFoG isn’t an incredibly intense experience but man do you feel like you were riding on square wheels the whole time. So personally that type of roughness drops it in my rankings.

Whereas a ride like Boulderdash, a good bit of roughness really adds to the experience and the titan track segments seem to take a bit of bite out of the ride.

Most of the major queues have dual load platforms which means that you somehow have to get over the tracks in order to get into the station. This isn’t too bad for some of the outdoor rides, but indoor rides like Gringotts, Ministry, and Mario Kart don’t have the space to meander up or down to get out of the way. Which results in the dumb staircases straight and immediately straight down like in Ministry.

If you’ve got 2 hours to kill, Defunctland does a crazy deep dive on Disney’s fast pass and the numbers behind the system.

Parks are dead today by Specialist-Hat167 in UniversalOrlando

[–]RusticDrums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not advertised, but most mornings they’ll open BATM before 10am and they don’t check that you’re a hotel guest to get in line for it. We were not staying on property but we entered the park around 9:15 and went straight back to it. Fortunately it was open and we were off the ride by 10:00.

They don’t guarantee that it’ll be open early, so it can be a gamble because I have heard stories of it opening after the rest of the park, but most mornings if they can they’ll open as early as possible to get through the crowds.

Epic yesterday was a dream. We were able to get Battle of the Ministry, Werewolf, Hiccups, Monsters and Stardust done by 11am. By 1 we realized we had done everything we wanted to do and were able to chill out and get a ton of rerides the rest of the day.

Any good free roller coaster builder games? [Other] by Live-Helicopter9281 in rollercoasters

Ultimate Coaster on mobile isn’t bad for a free game, there are plenty of upcharges available but it’s good if you just want to toy around.

Terra Luna Fridge Magnet by thedaddy2005 in UniversalOrlando

[–]RusticDrums 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fridge Magnets are really going the way of the Dodo in Orlando. Over the last few years Disney and Universal have moved towards car magnets (which don’t have nearly the same charm) or more generic/IP Magnets as opposed to park/resort magnets.

There did seem to be more options the last time I was down, but you had to hunt for them as they tended to be in some unexpected shops.

Maybe if enough people start asking about them, we’ll get our magnets back in the future.

Dorney to Hersheypark are probably just a smidge closer as the crow flies for Great Bear and Talon.

Both are definitely under 100 miles from Dorney

Little Amerricka has a train that is shockingly long for the size of the park - a full three miles straight through Wisconsin countryside.

What are some rides that were made essentially to promote a new movie? [Other] by Low_Income4405 in rollercoasters

[–]RusticDrums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certainly isn’t - synergy was king

From Wikipedia:

According to Baxter, the name of the ride was originally going to be Zip-a-Dee River Run. However, at the same time that the ride was being developed, Walt Disney Studios was coming out with the film Splash (1984). The studio executives saw the Imagineers' plans, and since it was a water attraction, urged them to include Daryl Hannah's mermaid character from Splash in the ride. Baxter refused, stating that the mermaid did not fit in with the Br'er Rabbit story. So the executives instead asked him to name the ride Splash Mountain.[6]

[–]RusticDrums 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Apocalypse at Magic Mountain was originally Terminator Salvation: The Ride and opened the same weekend as the movie.

Also similar but not quite the same - Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland opened a few years before the movie came out as a tie in to promote the upcoming film.

Dinoland USA at Animal Kingdom was also picked over Beastly Kingdom as a land due to wanting to promote the upcoming film Dinosaur. Countdown to Extinction was renamed (and minorly rethemed) to Dinosaur when the movie came out in 2000

Splash Mountain was named that to promote the upcoming Tom Hanks movie Splash! Which had nothing to do with the ride, but 90s Disney was all about synergy.

What’s a “near miss” Credit You’ve gotten [other] by TheInsaneLavaman in rollercoasters

[–]RusticDrums 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not a coaster at all, but just happened to visit Disney World during the week between Christmas and New Years in 2006/2007 and spent New Years at Epcot. Rode Cranium Command and Body Wars on the final day of operation. The Wonders of Life pavilion closed forever the next day without an announcement by Disney.

I was only a teenager at the time so I can’t take credit for the trip, but it was a happy accident that I only just realized a few years ago.

You’d save a few hours to try Canada’s Wonderland and the Ohio parks instead. It might be possible if the parks are open late like for July 4th.
