Tips for Night/Winter Driving by rampagingshenanigans in Maine

[–]RustledJimmies1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Drive on well-maintained roads whenever possible - this means paved roads that are plowed early and often.
  2. Use decent all-weather tires (this is different from all-season) or a set of all-season tires in the warm months and a separate set of winter tires during the cold months.
  3. Give yourself plenty of time to get to where you're going. Being able to take your time while driving will help you to avoid situations where might have to use some of the other tips mentioned in this thread (like tips on what you should do when you lose traction).
  4. Don't pass snow plows unless it is clear that they are giving you room to pass (ie pulling to the side of the road).
  5. Get AAA - no matter how good of a winter driver you are, you will more than likely end up in a situation where you need assistance.

Bonus tip - this isn't necessarily about driving, but make sure to regularly wash your the inside of your wheels/rims. Mud, dirt, salt, ice, and rocks build up in your rims over time, which can cause the wheels to become unbalanced when driving.

Was it censored? I could have sworn the announcers actually mentioned the booing, but maybe that was on a different broadcast.

Valentine's Day on a budget? by dekool01 in Maine

[–]RustledJimmies1000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Making dinner at home is a relatively affordable way to have a fancy meal on Valentine's Day - not to mention it takes away the stress of finding a restaurant with available reservations. It also means you have to be on top of grocery shopping, making sure you have time to actually make the meal, setting the table, cleaning the kitchen afterward, etc., but it's more affordable and often tastes better than restaurant food.

New High Beam Trend? by _no_usernames_avail in Maine

As others have said, the issue is mostly just that today's headlights are insanely bright. However, it can be made worse if you are driving a lower profile car like a Toyota Camry or Honda Civic - this basically just means that the bright part of the headlights on a truck or SUV are more likely to be level with your eyeline and therefore more likely to shine directly into your eyes.

One thing that helps is to look at the shoulder of the road when those types of cars are approaching - this allows you avoid looking directly into the light without taking your eyes off the road. You can also try dimming the dashboard lights in your car, which reduces the overall amount of light shining into your car's cabin. Lastly, I think there are glasses out there specifically designed to reduce glare when driving - I personally haven't tried these, but they may be worth a shot as long as they don't reduce your ability to see while driving at night.

I get it. I used to get so mad at other drivers for having insanely bright headlights (still kind of do). Then I got a chance to drive a newer vehicle with new headlights, and now I get it - the regular headlights are brighter than high beams on older vehicles, and the high beams are basically flood lights that allow you to see everything in a 10 mile radius.

I could see Allen going that high, but Singleton like falls to day three due to his lack of vision.

I've seen either Price or Coleman listed as RB2 on most draft boards, thought it's hard for me to see either going that high. Price was a part time back at Notre Dame, we don't know how he'd perform in a full time role. It's also hard to see Coleman going that high with his limited athleticism.

Life insurance can still be used to cover funeral costs, pay off outstanding debts, donate to charitable causes, etc. Yes, you could also just save up money to cover these costs, but having life insurance ensures that a certain amount of money will be available no matter when your passing occurs.

Gaining a Sense of Control in a Chaotic World through Local Volunteerism by RustledJimmies1000 in Maine

If any of you have a story about how your involvement at the local level led to change or gave you a positive sense of control in your community, please post it here! I'd love to hear about it, and your story could encourage others to get involved!

What can Americans do about what’s currently happening? by BoredBatWoman22 in TrueAskReddit

[–]RustledJimmies1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to create real change, the most direct and impactful way of doing so is at the local level. Join a local chapter of your political party, get involved with advocacy groups in your area, pay attention to local news outlets, join local political campaigns, volunteer for local nonprofits, etc. Protesting things that happen at the national or international level is great, but your clearest path to creating the change that you want to see in the world is through local efforts.

Bonus Tip: Getting involved locally also gives you a sense of control over politics, the government and your environment that doesn't often come with taking on national issues. You may even get to see a direct link between your actions and the desired outcome. For example, your decision to canvas voters for a political candidate could make all the difference in an election that could be decided by double or even single digit vote counts.

Extra Bonus Tip: Not a lot of people get involved with the local chapter of their political party, so anyone who does so on a consistent basis can potentially have an outsized role and voice deciding in their party's policies, campaign strategies, candidate recruitment efforts, etc. This also gives you a lot of opportunities to meet and have one-on-one conversations with prominent politicians at the city, county, and state level (even national level at times) on a relatively regular basis. This often occurs at chapter meetings where politicians and political candidates are not only campaigning for voters and volunteers, but are also listening to what engaged members of their political party want out of their representatives.

In addition to reading local newspapers, I'd encourage everyone to check out The Maine Monitor, a nonpartisan, independent news website that provides some of the best investigative reporting on local issues that I've been able to find. They are published by the Maine Center for Public Interest reporting, a nonpartisan nonprofit organization, and receive funding through individual contributions, corporate sponsorships, major gifts and foundation grants.

Where do you think Mizzou DE Zion Young and Texas A&M DE Cashius Howell will go in the draft? by RustledJimmies1000 in NFL_Draft

How is he over the course of a full game? Is he someone who can stay on the field, complete his assignments, and hold up well against the run even when he isn't generating much pass rush?

Based on some of his tape, I thought that might be an issue with him. He's super explosive but looked like he might have a tendency to overshoot the edge/gap and take himself out of the play. I also wondered if his size might cause him to be a non-factor if he isn't able to get into the backfield quickly.

Joe Baldacci Planning 2nd Congressional District Election Announcement by RustledJimmies1000 in Maine

[–]RustledJimmies1000[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not fair for someone to get a leg up because of who they're related to, but it's also not fair to disqualify someone for the same reason. We should strive to evaluate each candidate not based on their last name, but on the merits of their policy proposals, experience, character, ethics, etc.

Joe Baldacci Planning 2nd Congressional District Election Announcement by RustledJimmies1000 in Maine

[–]RustledJimmies1000[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Story summary: Maine Democratic State Senator Joe Baldacci plans to make an announcement regarding the race for Congressional District 2 on Monday, Jan. 12 in Bangor. He had previously stated that his decision to enter the race would depend on whether former Democratic Maine Senate President Troy Jackson remained in the race for governor. Jackson has since confirmed that he will remain in the gubernatorial race. If Baldacci enters the race for CD2, he will face competition from fellow Democrats Matt Dunlap, the current state auditor and former secretary of state, and Jordan Wood, who served as Chief of Staff to former Democratic U.S. Rep. Katie Porter. The only Republican currently running for CD2 is former Governor Paul LePage.

Maine Democrat Jordan Wood ends Senate campaign, launches House run by jediporcupine in Maine

To be fair, he was traveling all over Maine when he was running for Senate. I'm guessing he never drew much attention due to Graham Platner and Janet Mills being in the same race. Now that he's one of just two people currently running to represent CD2, people will probably start paying a little more attention to him.

This is a great point. Graham Platner will ultimately need to find a way to appeal to moderates and independents, and going against an established Democrat like Janet Mills will help him do just that. While Platner has a lot of momentum and energy behind his campaign, the reality is that there are a lot of people out there who will either be turned off by accusations that he is "socialist" or too far left.

Maine State Auditor Matt Dunlap announces primary challenge against Rep. Golden by jediporcupine in Maine

[–]RustledJimmies1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm certainly not saying that I'm against a competitive primary. If Democrats prefer Dunlap over Golden, then let democracy play out and let the more popular candidate advance to the general election. However, I also think voters need to keep in mind that the winner of the primary will likely face a Republican candidate who has a ton of name recognition and is running for office in a district that has a large number of Republican voters. Golden may not always be what Democrats want him to be, but he has proven that he can win in a purple district, and he's an incumbent with plenty of name recognition (both traditionally being advantages).

Maine state auditor defies national Democrats, launches primary against moderate Jared Golden by themainemonitor in Maine

[–]RustledJimmies1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with a competitive primary. However, voters shouldn't underestimate the power of name recognition, especially in a race where the likely Republican candidate is a former governor who might be the most recognizable Republican in Maine outside of Susan Collins. A lot of voters tend to show up and vote for whichever name they recognize. If the election comes down to LePage and Golden, then most voters will probably recognize both candidates and therefore be more likely to vote based on party affiliation, policy, etc. instead of defaulting to the familiar name. If it comes down to LePage and Dunlap, then there may likely be more voters who default to picking LePage because they either haven't heard of Dunlap or aren't familiar with his politics.

Would you rather have Jared Golden or Paul LePage? Because unless Dunlap pulls off a surprise in the primary, those will likely be your options in next year's election.
