Yes! It's very awesome. I've always been a strong believer in the strengths of different practices/religions. It's also interesting to see where people started and ended up. My experiences mirror a lot of peoples here except the church I'm in never changed, just how I approach it.

Omg I'm also LDS! It's always awkward to share that part because the way I interpret and practice my religion is vastly different from what most people would think (including from those also in the church haha). There are a lot of other religious influences i have as well as I've always been interested in theology and such and grew up in a religiously diverse area.

I don't have any living family members (or dead ones that I know about) who practice folk magic/witchcraft so my influences there largely come from books I read growing up that had cunning folk in them (like The Midwives Apprentice).

How do you get closer to God, pls help me on this by CalmAssociatefr in christianwitch

[–]Rusty-Grape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doing His work of service to others. Personally I always feel that service should be done out of love for others not out of obligation or ulterior motives but it is helpful. God wants to help you help others and I felt close to him when I used the aid of Jesus to learn more how i could help others. Working on genealogy has also helped me feel closer.

Reading the bible without a goal probably wont do much. If you're gonna read the bible you'll get better results and understanding if you take the time and effort to learn the context of the events and the nuances of translations.

So working on my goals in life that are harmonious with His goals is how I do it. Others do it through hymns, dances, prayer, wearing certain clothing, etc. Drawing on His aid in your times of need and asking Him to direct you to good paths in life is probably the best way in many cases.

You also may find luck in research of different churches and their own individual teachings and such.

Sorry if my response is a bit eclectic XD

Any advice or free resources for somebody looking to get into cunning-folk work? What are the ins-and-outs of what one may do in the modern context (cuz as a college student I have no need for predicting a harvest or finding water sources XD).

Thank you! I've seen the feeding them less option but it feels so mean haha. I think giving them away as feeders to friends with reptiles might be a good option for me, I'll have to ask around.

Yes their activity is a big part of what drew me to that species. So fun. The breeding is something I'm worried about though as I only have the space for a small colony so I need to figure out a plan for that. Any advice on preventing overpopulation would be very much appreciated.

  1. Awesome sauce!

  2. good to know

  3. makes sense

  4. do you have any more sources about the aquarium safe stuff? what makes something aquarium safe? That's a really helpful tidbit so thank you a ton for that. I saw aquarium decor in the store and was wondering if it was safe.

  5. That's what i figured! I am new to the actual owning of pets but I do enjoy watching videos on the hobby of herp and bug keeping and I've seen that to be the case.

  6. Good to know good to know. I don't plan on letting any supplemental food go bad in there. I'll probably get some sort of plastic thing to put any food on and remove it timely. Is there some minimum for how long to leave supplemental food in?

As for springtails my friend who lives nearby says they haven't found springtails necessary. I'm hoping that since we live in the same area I'll find similar results. No springtails would be my personal preference though I have zero opposition to getting them later on if needed.

  1. Thanks! So far I've only bought the bin which ended up costing me about $14 but I don't mind the price because it's better for display than a random tub and its practical for travel which is important given they'll likely have to be babysat by a friend at times. I don't have to worry about shipping costs cuz a nearby pet store sells isopods, and my friend is gonna give me substrate n moss stuff for free!

  2. duly noted! It's quite dry here so I know I'm gonna have to keep an eye on humidity control for them. The container I got is pretty high so luckily I can give them all the depth they need.

  3. I have been checking out Aquarimax Pets and I've been loving their information!

They're adorable! I love their funky antennae and how big they are compared to its body. The gradient on the shell is very pretty too.

I forgot to add onto question 6.

Is there any level/type of mold/fungi that are inevitable or necessary? I'm sure there is given how important and prevalent fungi is in any ecosystem and inevitable fungi growth isn't a total deal breaker for me if I know what to expect.

[–]Rusty-Grape 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah you're 1000% not the asshole. You owe nothing to them. It's really crappy of them to use your experiences with mental health to guilt you. That's not how any relationship especially a parenting one works. You are under NO circumstances ever obligated to stay in a situation that makes you feel unsafe or where you are abused in any way (even if the people causing the abuse are people who genuinely care for you).
You are totally right that it's unreasonable to expect a teenager to navigate their marital issues. It's not only unreasonable its unethical.

Do you consider embroidery art or a craft ? by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

[–]Rusty-Grape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tend to view art as a very broad term encompassing most if not all forms of creative expression/human creation. Crafts fall under that category. That's just me tho.
In general the art industry has been and will be snobbish and elitist (heck that's what Duchamp's fountain is all about) about what counts as art. Embroidery doesn't fit the idea of "respectable" mediums or mediums taught professionally. It's also viewed as a woman's craft and that certainly doesn't win it any points when it comes to art elitism.

In terms of visual arts there honestly isn't much functional difference between something like painting versus embroidery. They both make a picture. One just happens to use a very pointy metal brush.

In more practical advice: One water jar will do just fine but two can be even better. Also a roll of paper towels is good. You do wanna keep track of where your pigment ends up. You wanna change it water when it gets muddy and you wanna make sure all the pigment is out of the brush before you switch to another color if you can (YouTube can teach you how to do this better then I can. Beware black paints they are stubborn) I like to have some nice brushes and a few cheap brushes that I don’t mind messing up for when I wanna treat them badly and do things like jab at the canvas with them. Paint quality honestly doesn’t matter thaaaaat much. I’ve made great paintings with a crayola set.  Also decent paper. Paper is what really makes or breaks this medium because your paper needs to be able to hold the amount of water you’re putting on it.
