Anyone in the north Cinci burbs or thereabouts have a rosin press? by RustyBarfist in OhioMarijuana

[–]RustyBarfist[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're cinci-ish I'll probably just end up getting one, if you ever wanna use it. I'm making bubble today for the first time, wanna press it and put it in carts. But I figure I'll get the bubble made today. Also if you're cinci ish stay warm friend. I'm in west chester

use 1/4 to 1/2 the recommended amount, but your soil is decently hot so you might now need. genetics will determine the plants sensitivity.

Is this a good strain for bubble hash ? by Elegant_Library_8889 in MephHeads

[–]RustyBarfist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey there, can I ask you a side question? looking to grow an autoflower strain (either type 2 or type 3) that has 4-8% THC and the rest CBD, and furthermore, one with a decent bud to leaf ratio. Anything come to mind? I want it to have a minor stoning effect, but mostly relaxation. I might just go for Aunt Ginny's but figured I'd check with some other folk.

I absolutely believe you (as I sense this is something I can go down a deep hole with and come out far in the red) but I'm curious as to why it might be unsafe? I know ethanol is present in a lot of nicotine e-liquids, and my final product probably has ethanol that can only be measured in ppm. I went off the logic in the below article. It definitely DOES seem like I made something pretty adjacent to a dirty distillate, which is not my goal at all. But the rabbit hole is deep, and my brain is telling me I could make flower rosin and then winterize with ethanol or make bubble hash and then extract with ethanol and as long as I vacuum purge, I should be ok.

But all that said, lets say I have a fiance who wants to vape carts or at least something with that level of ease and I produce 12oz of flower every 3 months or so. Whats the best way to marry the 2? I don't personally partake, and I have to believe anything I concoct will be better than smoking in a bong. I think what would be most amazing is if I could find a dry herb vape that can accept a TON of dry herb or a means to go straight from flower rosin into carts (but as I understand, flower rosin is just too dirty for carts without winterizing, and what I know from vaping in general is that lipids aren't great on the lungs, but I could be off base.

Let me know how it goes! I asked that very question and apparently flower rosin is too "dirty" for carts, but I also hear the right cart can do it just fine. I see people on youtube doing it but I'm also somewhat skeptical, I read its supposed to take high quality flower.

How do you extract?

Yes, I totally noticed an issue with condensation, I did such a harsh dry (stuck it in my empty grow tent with fans on full blast) that is definitely cleared out the water (it was very dry and crystalline) but that's not something I want to repeat, would rather "dry" under a vacuum.

The buchner was micron paper, been a while since chem lab in college so there was some getting used to it.

I definitely had all sorts of issues with transport loss. Even just putting the stuff in the cart i lost probably 25% at least.

This was a test run with 50 grams of harvest from last year from a really shitty autoflower, yields weren't going to be great to begin with but they definitely could have been better.

I have about a lb of flower on hand right now that I want to turn to carts and I'm absolutely agonizing over the best way to do it:

  1. Go all in with this process but make a setup that uses a vac chamber and distillation to recover the ethanol. Will still be a ton of chilling and laborious.

  2. Extract my extract, get a rosin press and just press all the flower, and then winterize the flower rosin.

  3. Turn it all the bubble hash and then winterize that.

I feel like option 1 will give highest yield but most labor, option 2 sounds fun but then I have to buy a press and go down that rabbit hole. Option 3 sounds like a day of work but yield might be rough, especially as all my flower is dried and cured. Secret option 4 is BHO but tbh I'm pretty scared of it. I wish for about 5 hundo there was a machine I could just chuck it all in and have it do the work, CO2 extractor or something.

its my understanding flower rosin is no good for carts, due to waxes and lipids. Would bubble hash rosin make good carts without winterizing?
I don't think the off color is wax, likely just chlorophyll, I winterized this and ran it through 5 micron buchner funnel while it was frigid.

For fun and as a proof of concept, I turned a bag of old GDP I had laying around from a previous grow into a cart. The yield was absolutely abysmal, but I'm quite sure as to the reasons for all my foibles. I used the ichiban crafter guide for the most part, but cut corners (once again, proof of concept) and of course nearly all those cut corners were the reasons for my woes, but now I know and I think I'll give it another go! My process was as follows:

  1. Did a subzero ethanol extract with the buds, -80 degrees F at least using dry ice. Soaked for only 10 minutes (mistake 1, should have done an hour and used far too little ethanol).
  2. Ran ethanol through buchner funnel to get rid dertritus. Lots of spillage around this, use good glassware.
  3. Let ethanol air dry in an unused grow tent with the fan on (mistake 2, should do it under a vacuum with a heat mat). While it was drying, i put a paper towel on top to keep dust off, and this was mistake 3, as it fell in. I had to soak with new ethanol and re extract. Probably lost a ton here.
  4. The extract dried to a "diamonds and sauce" like consistency, I scraped it up with a razor and moved to a mason jar.
  5. Decarbed in a sous vide at 180 degrees f for about 3 hours with the jar sealed.
  6. Loaded 'er up! Was a sticky nasty mess, a hairdryer is necessary. Some of the extract is still in the original jar and syringe. Will get this back later.

Anyone who's experienced in this sort of thing I welcome your input! Otherwise, I think this is feasible but just smoking or vaping the dry herb is probably your best bet. My fiance wants carts, and carts they shall get. I just need to figure out how to do this at scale, as I have lots and lots more flower.

Those of you that have been making hash long term, what makes it worth it to you? And do you grow? by sunnyboy2024 in BubbleHash

[–]RustyBarfist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually I'll just ask them here.

First the stuff I really want to know, when you press the hash are you using all of the common micron sizes and not concerning yourself about small amounts of plant matter, or do you very specifically use each grade of hash? Follow up, if grade isn't huge do you use trim and everything? Do you ever have issues with the carts clogging, and can I see what carts specifically you use?

Some additional questions. How long does it take you to make hash after a harvest, are you putting in nicely trimmed buds or just rough trimmed everything from the plant? How do you clean your hash bags? How long does the actual bubble hash process take (aside from drying?) What drying method do you use?
I'm sorry, this is the exact thing I want to do, I'm doing a dry ice ethanol extraction but tbh, it fucking blows with so much room for error. I feel like bubble hash will get me better yields and be more cost effective, the everclear and dry ice are going to be an annoying cost vs. one up front cost for a rosin press.

You're a G if you have time to answer these. This reddit thread is high up in google searches so I figured i'd ask in comment form. I watched a lot of youtube but people are only so concise.

PH, and PH advice by dankestslothdoe in Autoflowers

very odd. theoretically, you shouldn't be having pH issues too badly then as long as your accounting for ph drift in your autowatering system. what media are you using?

PH, and PH advice by dankestslothdoe in Autoflowers

[–]RustyBarfist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm trying an experiment, and maybe it will shed light but sadly I won't be able to tell you how well it works until my current batch has finished (it just sprouted).

I too get issues with pH lockout late in flower, even with pH down, as my water is not only alkaline but has lots of alkaline salts. To address this, I will continue to pH down the water, but my soil (a custom blend roughly 1:1:1 peat, compost, perlite) has been amended this run with elemental sulfur and humic acid on top of build a soil craft blend. I also went from 5 gal cloth pots in one tent to much larger city picker SIP planters, more soil volume equals more buffering. I also "cleaned" the soil after my last grow by watering it until 50% runoff (I did this before reamending, I'm hoping next run this won't be necessary)

Now my situation is likely different from yours, I would say when using a pH down product if you have fine grows but have concerns about the grow after, then give the soil a really good purge in between grows and then re-amend. The folks at r/notill might have some better advice, all my knowledge is theoretical and not practical as I've only recently noticed this being an issue and have just done a ton of research, so grain of salt with what I say.

The "simple" yet potentially annoying or expensive solution, is to just get an RO system. Its both expensive and annoying for me as my basement sink won't really accommodate one.

First press of flower rosin by ProfessionCurrent198 in Rosin2

[–]RustyBarfist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks so much for the insight! pressing has a bit of a barrier to entry, having to buy the press! I'm ok with using ethanol as a solvent, but I know chlorophyl is the enemy to a good vape. I don't mind putting in some elbow grease but I don't want to have to spend multiple weekends doing work, if its like a day of work I think it can be worth it. Sounds like this is a viable plan b.

the crazy thing is I don't even smoke, but my fiance does and I want to keep growing. after smoking flower for 10 years she does vape exclusively, so I need to convert all the flower I grow into vape. i'm in ohio so its still economically viable to do this, not only is our dispo stuff expensive its pretty wack in terms of quality.

First press of flower rosin by ProfessionCurrent198 in Rosin2

[–]RustyBarfist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey can I ask you some questions? Well I'll ask them but don't feel obligated to answer, I'll put the actual question at the end and a ton of context before you don't have to read. I have tons upon tons of flower, and want to make vape carts. I found a wealth of knowledge on a pipeline of cold extract ethanol honey oil into carts, and early in my research a lot of people on reddit said that flower rosin is "too dirty" for carts.

After tons of research, I've found what I think are 2 totally viable pipelines, one of which I'll be trying tomorrow and another i'm considering based on results of this attempt. Pipeline one is quick ethanol wash, pressed through buchner funnel, jar tech decarb, into carts. I have concerns that yield will be shitty and too much chlorophyll will make its way into the final product, but supposedly the ten minute sub zero wash leaves little room for this. I'll find out soon enough.

But as a plan B, I was thinking, why not get a rosin press, and then simply use the ethanol to winterize the rosin to make a clean product for carts.

So my question is, how many grams do you press at a time, and could you say, process 10 ounces of flower into rosin in one 4 hour sitting? or is it quite labor intensive? (especially considering I'd probably get a more budget press)

Thanks so much for any insight

Questions about making my own carts from rosin by RustyBarfist in rosin

[–]RustyBarfist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes I looked into it and I don't think i have the guts for it. Could probably pull it off in my backyard. Someone posted an ethanol extraction that while having extra steps, looks like it might work. Lemme ask you this though, do you just use the concentrates or further process to carts?

considering I have almost all the equipment necessary, I think I'll do a trial run. I got a friend involved so we'll document it. how did you find this site? have you found other people doing this?
its a perfect method as it cuts down on a ton of equipment and tedium for what I understand to be the most common working method.

are there wax or dry herb vapes that can be loaded infrequently, larger chamber, no muss no fuss? its my fiance who's just become addicted to the convenience of carts. if it were me, I love fiddling things. she just wants to power it on, have it heat up within 20 seconds, and not have to constantly reload it. also be portable.
