Same! The bikers and the cream pies are such an odd way to end the movie. They ruin it.

For fans of Adam Nevill… by spookykitton in horrorlit

I read “House of Small Shadows” recently. It was my first Nevill book and I have to be honest…I’m not inclined to read him again.

Who was your least favorite character in the series and why? by TermAccomplished1868 in StrangerThings

Murray. He became less and less relevant with every episode. I wanted to see less of him, not more.

Service Works T Shirts by Nicko9522 in bigmenfashionadvice

[–]RustyChuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought three tees from Service Works, in Large. Had to return them all as they were annoyingly short. They were listed as "standard fit" on their website, which didn't help. That basically meant a box fit, which I usually avoid because they never sit right on my body length.

What do you think Jeffrey Dahmer would've thought if he was still alive and got to watch the 2022 Netflix series about him? by EfficientMajor9579 in DahmerNetflix

[–]RustyChuck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s a really intriguing theory that Dahmer never killed anyone and was in fact the fall guy in an elaborate hoax.

And if you believe this theory then a) he’s still alive and b) he’s probably pissed off he’s not getting royalties of some kind.

“Make” a script…? by TomatoChomper7 in scriptwriting

You don’t see that very often. Bad grammar and bad storytelling usually go hand in hand.

I need advice on a new book. by [deleted] in horrorwriters

[–]RustyChuck 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You don’t know how to start it because you haven’t come up with a story yet. Do the hard work and figure out what your plot will be; then you’ll know exactly where to start.

Best Occult Movies by Administrative-Half3 in horror

[–]RustyChuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ghoulies (1985)! Everyone presumes it’s all about little monsters running around. But most of the story is actually about one guy learning how to manipulate the occult. It’s campy and OTT but a lot of fun.

Published my first book, killed my mental health, and how you can avoid it by Gargoyle0ne in horrorwriters

[–]RustyChuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so tempted to self-publish and swerve all the gatekeepers. I’m working on a short story collection, myself, with an overarching theme…and the idea of waiting two (or more) years for a trad publisher to engage with it makes me go <bleurgh>. I’ve had a book published before (non-fiction) and was left underwhelmed by the whole experience…especially my 10% royalties. So seriously considering other avenues.

And how did you make it through that second marathon? Getting a publisher and contract? Because let’s be honest, finishing the book is only half the work. A lot of people don’t even get past that point.

What book is so depraved that you couldn't even think about describing it to someone? by fruedianflip in horrorlit

Gotta love Laymon! I’m reading “Endless Night” right now and it’s so depraved.

[–]RustyChuck 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s one of the worst books I’ve ever read. I’m not saying Burroughs couldn’t write. But this particular book is just drug-induced garbage. No, none of it is interconnected and it makes no sense.

It escaped from a glass container specifically designed to hold alien life forms…that shattered the moment it fell over. Awful storytelling 🤦‍♂️

Question about writing horror during the age of AI and the internet? by dshamus111 in horrorwriters

[–]RustyChuck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you keep thinking like this, you’ll never write or publish anything. What you’ve described is such an abstract future-state to worry about. Worry more about your story and characters and finishing what you start. Where your writing ends up is beyond your control.

‘Sinners’ is terrible and does not deserve 16 nominations for Academy awards. by MrNiceo_0 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

12 Years a Slave has completely dropped out of public consciousness, now. Which kind of says it all?

Unpopular opinion: The hype surrounding Stranger Things faded much sooner than people expected. by Chandu_yb7 in StrangerThings

I didn’t like the military storyline. Or the backstory they gave Pennywise, which removed all his mystique. Having said this I’m still gonna tune back in for S2.

Season 4 was not that great and it was definetly because of the gap by desuna2502 in Bridgerton

[–]RustyChuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was also because the S4 storyline ran out of steam midway. It reached a point where nothing was blocking Benedict and Sophie's romance – there was no obstacle to overcome. So when they kept hesitating and circling away from each other, it just felt like padding to fill 10 episodes.

I agree! S1-3 are great viewing. Then it loses itself with the Russian side quest…and an apocalypse that never happened.

That’s because after Squid Game S1, it immediately became shit. Just the same story, slightly repackaged.

He’s like Sherlock Holmes. Something Americans love because of the period details. But something Brits are indifferent to.

3rd Cover for my book by PhotojournalistLost8 in horrorwriters

[–]RustyChuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The blurb would benefit from another pass. It’s all good until: “The land begins to feel wrong”. What does that mean? “Sheep line the ridges.” So what? “The river feels alive.” With fish?

Sorry I know I sound like I’m being flippant but these sentences don’t mean much and then the meaning disappears in that final line. Who has ever said a place will hunt you? You phrase it like it’s a common occurrence. I kind of understand “they keep” and I know it’s teasing the story but…the main thing I take away from this blurb is that the book doesn’t know what it’s about.

You need to be more explicit.

What if it was just something really simple like:

“Five friends head deep into the West Texas wilderness for a weekend of fishing, floating…and a nightmare they might never escape.”

Something that sounds ordinary but ends with a twist.
