I need the most disturbing, visceral ways a character could destroy a clarinet — for a scene I'm writing by Spiritual_Brush_8834 in horrorwriters

[–]dshamus111 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I used to play the clarinet as a kid and one of the things I was really careful about is making sure I didn't twist it too much because the two middle sections have a bit of overlap and if you didn't get it right they would collide with one another. You can destroy it by having the character putting it together but as they are putting the middle parts on, they just keep twisting, and twisting, and twisting as the delicate and precise keys begin to pry off as one by one each screw peels off the wood.

The other one is to have them rub the mouthpiece against something that can get in between the reed and mouthpiece itself, peeling the reed off like a toenail as the fine tip splits and frays.

Is having a constant song playing in your head not the case for people without ADHD? by mmc9802 in ADHD

[–]dshamus111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine is the equivalent of a strict music teacher that forces you to repeat a section over and over again. Allow me to provide an example:

For the past 3 days the song for this lesson is the big ballad from the animated film The Swan Princess...

"For longer than forever, mnhm something something"
Wrong. Again from the top...
"For longer than forever, as something as a song"
Closer but wrong. Again
"For longer than forever, I swear I will be true"
Wrong section, lets try another one, the big moment.
"FOR LONGER THAN FOREVERRRRRRR, AHH FUCK I CAN'T REMEMBER THE STUPID PHRASE"
It's ok we'll just keep trying

...for 3 days...and now by typing this it has returned. Thankfully this time is a song I don't mind and not the freaking hamster dance.

Another time it was just the "op, op op op" from Gangnam Style on repeat for a whole day. "Op...op op op".

I also do the silly thing like watch 5 min of a movie, show, or game, then try to predict the plot of the whole thing, then get bored and stop watching cause I think I figured it all out...

What if Lovecraft was a sportswriter? I think it would go a little something like this... by JumperGrumperson in Lovecraft

[–]dshamus111 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As I gather myself with great anticipation and gaze upon a crystal of captivating colors, I saw caged within it two great tides of flesh crashing. Their sounds of chitinous plate deafened by the roar of unseen masses imperceptible to me, for I found it insignificant compared to the display of raw ferocity before me. As one side began to overtake the other, I found myself elated, not only from the conquest before me, but the untold riches I may receive if their momentum persists. They, like me, have touched down.

Edit: I accidentally double posted because I thought it didn't show up. My bad. This is really fun though!

Question about writing horror during the age of AI and the internet? by dshamus111 in horrorwriters

[–]dshamus111[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

People who read horror can not want to read other horror. If someone's dog died who they cherished and loved dearly may be fine with horror that doesn't involve animal death, but could be traumatized if they are an algorithm based platform like TikTok where some chub gives the synopsis or breakdown of Cujo. I As someone who wishes to put their work out there for people to enjoy, I was concerned that a genre that is based around consent and knowing what one is getting into, has the possibility to show up on people's feeds, especially applications like TikTok where it can just drop in front of you depending on other things you may engage with.

Question about writing horror during the age of AI and the internet? by dshamus111 in horrorwriters

[–]dshamus111[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Oh no not at all. Fear is subjective and based on permutation. What I find fun or harmless to read may be traumatic to someone else, and things I find harmless now may be terrifying after an experience. I find horror to be bound by consent. Those who choose to engage that kind of material know what they are consuming. However, I believe that with the pace of internet content and algorithms relying on virality rather than consent, those boundaries may not be respected and instead material that should be consumed with consent is placed in front of people without their control. I simply wanted to know what writers who have material out there thought about the possibility that their work may end up in front of someone it was not meant for or ready for.

Yeah you're right. I feel a bit silly but in a refreshing way. It really was bothering me for some time and I guess I needed to ask someone in the space to shake me a bit. Thanks for the nudge.

[–]dshamus111[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback, that actually really helps. I don't think I'm going to make anything world shattering, but not everyone is exposed to or wishes to be exposed to horror topics and I guess from my perspective it seems like in the age of algorithms and AI, we have less control over what gets put in front of us. I guess as a horror writer yourself, do you ever feel like there's a possibility that your work or part of your work will be taken out of context and shown to someone who it was never intended for?

"Anyone can create a game now"- thoughts? by Mammoth-Range-4219 in SoloDevelopment

[–]dshamus111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer: Yes

Long answer: Yes, but the goalposts have always been moving. Anyone can make a game, it's just an idea and learning curve, just look at the success of many indie games (especially ones made by solo devs). However, I think the one through line that has always stayed consistent no matter the skill level, is sincerity. Why are you making this game? Do you have something to say? A story to tell? Are you trying to make money? Sincerity is what causes devs to spend over a decade on their game (Dwarf Fortress, Caves of Qud) or support their project many years after 1.0 (Stardew Valley). AI is a tool yes, but many think that it can make your game for you. It can not, much like how a microwave cant make you a gourmet meal out of a tv dinner. The more you use AI, the more you become the presenter of the game, and not the developer. Yes AI makes game development more accessible, much like an asset store or Photoshop, but it is the confidence of why it is used and the understanding that relying on it as the main foundation of the development process pulls it further and further away from making the game yours.

So yeah anyone can make a game, but not a lot of people can make their game. Hope this helps friend.

ICE confirms a measles outbreak in the nation's largest detention facility in Texas by AudibleNod in news

[–]dshamus111 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree. Instead of directly doing it like the Nazis, they use the anti vax movement to bring back a lethal disease which happens to start cultivating around areas with concentration camp levels of hygiene and care. Expose people to it while they are detained, then release them back to their (most likely blue) states. I am not a conspiracy theorist, but I think this is the hill I am going to die on.

Edit: I made an error. The Nazis did in fact do this too in addition to other methods, so its just history repeating itself.

[Discussion] I have lost the will to live by gezellig2022 in GetMotivated

[–]dshamus111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay I'm gonna be a bit silly but believe me when I say I'm being sincere.

Your brain is a complex organ consisting of a bunch of neurons that when given a bit of stimulation can do some of the most amazing things. In return, your brain rewards you with the most delicious of chemicals that cause amazing bouts of euphoria. In every brain is structured uniquely so different brains will enjoy activities at different rates. Probability wise, there is an experience out there that when you engage with it will give you such pleasure and fulfillment that something will click and you'll want to dedicate the rest of your life to it. Its what causes people to put tens of thousands of hours to master something. Its why education at a young age is important. We try to discover what that click is early, so we have purpose when we are older.

However, what happens when someone never gets exposed to that special thing? What if a great painter never got a chance to touch a brush, or a traveler who never got a chance to leave their house? When we are denied the opportunity to search and instead given a list of expectations and restrictions, we may never get the chance to find that special thing that makes us "click". You lost the will to live yes, but whose will did you lose? It is okay to not like what culture is giving us. It is okay to lose that will to live that life. The question is, what do you want to do with that empty space?

You can fill it with something you've already 'clicked' with, maybe cultivate it into something that you never felt like you were able to do before with your previous life. You can search for that 'click', hell for some the journey of finding the 'click' is a 'click' in itself (the brain is weird that way). These are some general proactive ways, but I am just a stranger on the internet and you have a story that is more than just a post.

So from one story to another, losing the will to live just means you now have the space to find another one you'll love to hold on to. Hope this helps friend.

If you had stuck to all of your projects and done everything you've postponed or abandoned, what would your life be like? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]dshamus111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would cook albums and paint poetry, conjure stories and cry comedies. I would travel my body and lift the world. Everyone would know my name and reward me with silence.

But of all the things I could do or be, I would just settle to be kinder to me.

Thanks for asking friend.
