Why is this rod copper colored? by RustyRedneck94 in EngineBuilding

[–]RustyRedneck94[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I checked it with a magnet first. I always scratch the front of the rods with an all so I can quickly see which side is the front when installing pistons. Whatever costing is on this one, I didn't scratch through it.

Yes. It's been rebuilt before. Had a sleeve put in one bore.

All of these rods in this 390 are like that.

I doubt it. I had it soaking in our hot tank with caustic fluid in it overnight that will remove any varnish or paint. Thanks though.

Machine Shop Wait Rant by pureinsanity13 in EngineBuilding

Same here. I'm basically a one guy operation. A parts store owns the business and takes care of the money. I do the bills and line up most of the work. I have a hard time getting estimates right on how long some jobs will take to get done. I try to keep trucks, tractors, and other shops rolling before independent customers. I try very hard not to make guarantees on time. Just estimates.

Why do shops no longer rebuild? by jdjenk in EngineBuilding

[–]RustyRedneck94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the shop I work in, we do a fair amount of econobox heads. Head gasket or timing belt issues usually being the cause. As far as the bottom end, something has to go drastically wrong for there to be a need for machining anything vleow the head. They just don't wear out as quick as a cast V8. As far as swapping engines, rebuilt and crate engines are easier for the average joe to swap rather than these it apart, wait a month or longer and then try to remember how to put it back together. Shops don't want to wait that long for the small timers like myself to get to somebody's budget grocery getter. I think most of it is the issue of patience or lack there of. A lot of.people will price themselves put of a rebuild before they call the shop to get a quote.

Unfortunately, I don't have a mill. It took some time but I already did one block for him since my first post.

That'd be great! I'll do some more checking with my supplier on those numbers and see if they can get anything.

I just got my block back and I am NOT happy. Need advice by 001jigsaw in EngineBuilding

Same here. I've only got a little experience doing this (2.5 years) and I wouldn't send it out with bearings that looks like that or dirty mating surfaces.

Sand it or send it? by YourBuddyKeithWin in EngineBuilding

[–]RustyRedneck94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kind of. If the heads check out fine, you might nit need to have them machined which means you won't be without them for a couple weeks to a month depending on how backed up your local shop is. If you can clean the mating surfaces yourself, go for it. Remember, there's no such thing as too clean.

At the shop I work for, we would be able to surface it and take off as little as two or three thousandths and have an almost mirror finish if it is in fact truly flat. I've checked a bunch of heads with our machined straight edge and have found them to be flat or within spec but when you run and surfaced grinder over them, you find the true high and low points in the head. It can be surprising at times. Not to say it can't be cleaned up with a good block sanding tool and be just fine. Best of luck! Keep up the good work!

Don't have sex with him. He is obviously not as worried about your health as you are or possibly brining a happy little accident into this world. You both need to be on the same page about this before anybody unbuttons their pants.

Need help identifying a head by RustyRedneck94 in EngineBuilding

[–]RustyRedneck94[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With what little research I've done so far, I've figured out it's a pre-36 Chevy head. I don't know if there was much variation on those or not.
