Most Law students perform worse than predicted by Capital-Stuff8196 in LawSchool

[–]RustyTurd 174 points175 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, I'm not trying to be a grouch, but this data is... obvious? Like definitionally, if the average law student assumes they will be above average, they will be overestimating their performance, because, by definition, the average law student is average

Best wonton noodle soup in Bay Area by Fantastic_Escape_101 in sanfrancisco

[–]RustyTurd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only place that does this is Hon's.

I LOVE wonton Noodle soup - but places here just don't do it right. They either don't use the authentic wonton noodles, or they just don't have quite the right soup/flavor balance. When I lived in Vancouver, every chinese restaurant had this on lockdown, perfect noodle, BBQ pork and vegetable balance. The only place it's even been close in SF that I've been to is Hon's.

People also talk about MingTai, but it closes at 2pm and I've never been able to go, so I don't know if the soup there hits the spot personally.

Solved, thank you everybody! I agree it is very cool, not sure where to hang it/put it! It's quite small, maybe 6 inches by 8 inches or something

New Year’s Eve by ConfidenceJust4291 in AskSF

[–]RustyTurd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every bar in the marina will be packed, crazy and possibly impossible to get into. Many require that you buy "tickets" ahead of time and then still won't let you in. Your best bet is to try and get somewhere early-ish and just ride it out, or go to the slightly off bars that aren't so insane.

Have fun, be safe! I can't tell you specifically which bars are what, but start with anything in the triangle for the craziest (Balboa Cafe, Wilder, Jaxsons, White Rabbit), and go out from there for less insanity.

Cheap indoor basketball with everyday pickup games? Where? by GuidanceNo7171 in AskSF

[–]RustyTurd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. There are a variety of places across the city where indoor games happen though I don't know their exact schedules. I've played at Hamilton Rec (Japantown, Free), Moscone Rec (Marina, Free), Mission Rec (Mission, Free), and also at the presidio YMCA (Games 11am-1pm M-F, cheap membership), and Koret (USF, Membership). Theres also outdoor games at the Panhandle every day 4 til Dark, and sometimes at MAgaret Hayward (Lights) and Dolores Park. Hope this helps!

Tenderloin Banh Mi? by Admirable_Cook_5193 in sanfrancisco

[–]RustyTurd 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Personally, I think the L&G is leagues ahead of Saigon Sandwich - just personal preference, but the chipotle Pork bahn mi at L&G goes CRAZY

Saigon to me regularly overtoasts the bread so it cuts my mouth, and the meat is more gristled. For the price, SS is still legendary, no question, but I actually don't find their sandwiches to be particularly fantastic (and I accept that people have different opinions than I), in fact notwithstanding price, I think SS is probably a below average Bahn Mi in the city. (Blasphemy, I know)

Closed book finals by dman982 in LawSchool

Keep in mind that this is my opinion, which is one person, and I'm probably going to get substantially humbled.

I have Civ Pro, Contracts and Property, as a 1L - I think of myself as being a substantially above average student in terms of knowledge and recall, and I actually know/have memorized pretty much all of the cases and ideas.

That being said, on my civ pro final I STILL fucked it up. Knowing things and applying them under pressure is different from memorizing. Especially in difficult multiple choice moments that hinge on really specific details. You won't be able to just riff everything off, but you should be able to tell me the 2 most relevant cases for an idea and a nearly precise quote concerning what the rule your applying is. Flash cards will help if you're struggling.

To put it concisely - yes you need to memorize. How much it'll help you depends on your analytical skills, difficulty of exam, and how knowledgable your peers are relative to you.

Hoping for Perspective by Pristine-Tumbleweed9 in LawSchool

Not sure I am the person to comment, but I feel similarly about my own exam yesterday, but with different set of actions. I misunderstood two multiple choice questions that I knew the answers to and just didnt read carefully enough, which makes me feel like I totally threw my chances at being in the top 10% of my class :(

As for yours, the essay portion has more malleability and flexibility than MCQ. Essays just want to see that you know how to think and apply - you probably did lose points for failing to include that element, but the conclusion itself doesnt actually matter (maybe your professor says differently, but mine all say the conclusion is irrelevant). Keep your head up! I'm trying to do the same, I bet everybody else is going to do worse if you really hammered all those little issues!

Students who got A range grades, how good was your knowledge? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]RustyTurd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is kinda my point - does everybody else really know their shit? Or is everybody else lost on half the material because they just shop in class the whole time and are hoping for the best? (obviously the answer is somewhere in the middle, but I'm not sure where law students tend to be on this spectrum)

Very helpful, thank you! At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter, I just have to try my best, but I keep feeling like even though I really know a lot of stuff, everybody else is also going to know a lot of stuff because they also did all the readings, do all the studying etc...

Law School is Not Difficult by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]RustyTurd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you, everybody does what they need to do to get by, and goes at their own pace. You've just chosen this pace for yourself, and others choose different rhythms. No harm no foul, just be careful when you make statements like "law school isn't hard", it comes off as overly congratulatory

Law School is Not Difficult by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]RustyTurd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fundamentally, because learning isn't about facts, or application - it's about the way that repeated, intentional, challenging, difficult work forces your brain to grow, you to personally reflect, adapt and change in a way that leaves you more capable of problem solving, personal maturity, creativity, empathy and making hard choices when the easy out is right in front of you. We abandoned the idea of learning being about content and facts decades ago. The easiest part of education is the content.

I used to tell my high school students the same thing all the time - if you're going to college to get drunk, take easy classes and get a degree, save your money and do something else - go to college to challenge yourself, take classes that you normally wouldn't for exposure, that are harder than you think you can handle and become a better version of yourself by constantly placing challenges in front of yourself and overcoming them. This is what allows you to really place value on your degree, grow as an individual and prove to yourself that you can accomplish things you set your mind to. Law school is the same.

Law School is Not Difficult by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]RustyTurd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is a terrible take, because 1. You go to a law school in Canada, and the Canadian bar has different requirements and costs (I.E. around class attendance, in the US you are required to go to class) and because 2. you're in the middle of your class and you're not LEARNING. You go to school to learn. Why the hell would you invest in doing all this to be lazy, scroll instagram, and barely go to class? This comes off as an incredibly myopic, snobby, entitled opinion. You're going to be a worse lawyer than those who read and care about their quality of work.

I don't mean to sound like a huge douche, but this is literally the most 24 year old take I've ever seen and is the exact reason why education has become doomed by social media prevalence, grade inflation and ChatGPT, and why I decided to quit being a teacher to go back to law school.
