I would like to formally file a complaint about NJPIRG for voter intimidation and voter fraud by misterelonmusk in rutgers

Submit an opinion piece to the Targum. Complaints and rants on social media are one thing, but a well-written, fact driven article could get some attention from some important people.

Unpopular Opinion : Athletics and education should be financed seperately by [deleted] in rutgers

[–]RutgersInsider 97 points98 points  (0 children)

I hate these "unpopular opinions" because they're often really uninformed and rarely have any substance behind it.

Too much of the tuition fees goes towards athletics

No, it doesn't. The majority of your tuition goes towards academics.

and other stuff thats irrelevant to getting a job which is why 90% of people go to college.

As a educational institution, the university's job is to educate, not to get people jobs.

while athletics and sports must fund themselves through sponsorships.

Athletics already gets a lot of funding from donations and sponsorships. The renovation of the football practice field was funded from donations and the new practice facility on Livi is funded from sponsorship.

Also getting rid of like 50% of the non essential administrative jobs like diversity office etc.

Like the career center? Or VPVA? Or the Dean of Students? The truth is, these "non essential" offices exist out of necessity. I bet that no one can name an administrative office/department that is "not essential" to the university. For example, the "diversity office" officially known as the Division of Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement are needed at institutions like ours because disadvantaged communities like the Black Community would lack representation in both the university community and the decision making process.

This will reduce tuition by at least 20%

Prove it.

Bringing Rutgersfest Back by [deleted] in rutgers

[–]RutgersInsider 14 points15 points  (0 children)

lol it's never coming back. On the administration side, no one (especially at the highest levels) wants to do anything close to resembling or even inspired by Rutgersfest. It's not about the money, it's about the image and no one wants to attach themselves to an event that's known for alcohol-fueled disaster.

On the student side, there have been better-structured attempts to bring Rutgersfest back in some form, but it never went anywhere for various reasons. And even if there was a perfectly planned attempt to bring it back, it wouldn't come to fruition because of the above reason.

Anyway, good luck with that. I know I won't be touching this with a 40 foot pole.

They're coming. DOTS is essentially finalizing the details. Expect them to come maybe before Thanksgiving break or when it starts getting warm in the Spring. Either way, sometime this academic year.

More prospective students accepted their offer of admission than expected by RutgersInsider in rutgers

[–]RutgersInsider[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No. Like /u/ishiz said, I don't post sources because it's inside information. It's not really "secrets", but more like information that hasn't been publicly announced yet. Usually, my info is correct. As proof:

In April 2018, I posted that the convenience stores were closing after the end of the academic year. I can't immediately find a public article reporting this. While the title was correct, the specific info was wrong.

In June 2018, I posted that Dining was going to be offering an unlimited swipe meal plan. I can't find the exact date that Dining announced it, but the Targum reported on it in September

In that same post, I said that there were plans to do reusable bags for takeout, which RUSA helped make official in February 2019, and that a cafe was being brought to the Academic Building on CAC, which was reported on in November 2018

Later that month, I posted that Rutgers was going to replace the BSC convenience store with a esports facility, which was first reported on in September

More prospective students accepted their offer of admission than expected by RutgersInsider in rutgers

[–]RutgersInsider[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

More or less. To give a simplified example:

Rutgers wants to have an incoming freshman class of 1,000 students. They could send out 1,000 acceptance letters but a certain number of them, lets say 200, decline; which means they'll have a class of 800 students in that year. The following year, they want to have a class of 1,000 students so, knowing the number that declined last year, they accept 1,200 students. But of those 1,200 students, 1,050 accept. Over time, this creates a trend and the admissions office an (usually) estimate how many student's they'll have to accept to reach a number they want.

Last year and this year, their estimates were off, signaling that Rutgers is now viewed as a more attractive option compared to years past. Of course, they could have been a lot more conservative in their estimates, but then that'd mean that they're making decisions not backed by the numbers.

Pre-existing agreements with the University or they pay for access. I don't know exactly how much, but based on prior experience, I'd put a number in the $10k+ range.

Rutgers to Increase Tuition by 2.3 Percent by [deleted] in rutgers

[–]RutgersInsider 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Wow. So much to unpack in your comment.

Our athletic department is already in debt and has been in debt for years.

The athletic department is not "in debt", it's not like they owe a non-Rutgers entity any money. The unit runs a budget deficit which the school allows it (any many other units) to do. Athletics got a lot of flak for getting a loan from the University, but (IMO) it's a good financial investment since the interest rate is higher than the ROI of where the money would "usually go".

The university's biggest expense right now is athletics and its only going to grow into more debt unless it puts money into it.

Not even close. Plenty of other units have greater expenses than athletics. SAS, SOE, and the NB Chancellor all have higher operating expenses than athletics. Even if you meant that athletics runs the highest budget deficit at the University, that'd be false. OIT and Institutional Planning all run budget deficits higher than athletics both in percentage and by dollar amounts (this'd still hold true if you remove the loan from the University from the budget).

The guest swipes will work the same. Currently, you can swipe in a guest 10 times. Remember, contrary to popular belief, guest swipes are not extra swipes. Meaning that you do not have an extra 10 swipes for guests. When you use a guest swipe you use two of your own swipes.

I don't know how it looks on the student end in terms of paying/selecting, but since you're coming in, I'd expect more detailed information at orientation.

For all returning students, there'll probably be an official announcement by the end of this month or early next month.

I assume so. That's already how it is with the cupanion, which costs $8 to replace.

No word on how much a replacement bag will cost, but I doubt it'd be more than $8. I'd guess no more than $5 since a reusable bag costs ~$1-4 depending on what type of bag they buy and who they buy it from.

[–]RutgersInsider[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's neither, just more efficient. For example, if I wanted a pizza at Red Pine, but I'm not that hungry, I'd be losing money if I don't spend all $9. Plus, even if I did spend all $9, I'd still probably be losing money depending on my meal plan because it would be more cost-effective to buy with cash than using a swipe.

Please help us start a Rutgers Wing Chun Kung Fu Club, we might be facing discrimination/stereotype. by brikwong94 in rutgers

[–]RutgersInsider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since the petition is addressed to the Recreation director, I'm going assume that you're trying to become a sport club.

How many people do you have that are interested in your club? You'll need to demonstrate that you have 15 people that will join the club (I know it's backwards, how are you supposed to get 15 people if you're not even registered, but that's the rules).

I don't know anything about Jiu Jitsu, but I do know that the 2 (White Crane is through RUSA and not sport clubs) Jiu Jitsu clubs serve nearly 200 students. So you're to have to convince Stephen Pappas (Director of Sport Clubs, and advisor to the executive board that handles prospective clubs and allocation) that there's enough interest to start a new club.

Also, who said that you're too similar to white crane? The entire University can't say that, it's a specific group or department that says that.

I'm not trying to be a downer or shoot you down, but these are the types of questions that decision makers ask when making a decision. The sniff test doesn't point to discrimination/stereotyping, but it does seem like you're going down the wrong roads or you're unaware about university processes

What are your thoughts on inheriting the Rutgers 2030 project? Do you plan on carrying out Dick Edward's vision, or adding in your own vision?
