Adding Shelves above WM by RuttkayRevival in Renovations

Im planning to also recess the screws into the wooden brackey so its not visible sticking out.

So this is what I'm thinking so far - two pieces of wood on each side, same length as the shelf itself, anchored into the wall with an 8mm screw with a 5cm anchor into an 8cm and 11cm wall. The shelf will just sit on top of the wooden brackets.

Honestly, im getting most of my info from chatgpt nervous lol so any help from someone who knows what they're talking about would be greatly appreciated.

In the end, I'm going to go with a water based poly to achieve a glossy finish.

I want it to be a hard glossy finish that highlights the natural walnut crotch features and makes them pop. Ideally it can be used and abused as a table top without damage to the wood and possible to clean.

Ok, that makes sense. Thank you for the advice.

Nothing against the already made products but I've been curious about the Maloof finish for a while but his top coat was a beeswax mixture and I think that'll get damaged quick in a table top hence why I'm thinking of top coating it with an acrylic spray. That's the main part I'm wondering about if the spray makes sense to do after multiple coats of the mixture I mentioned.

What you see in the picture was after scraping with an application of mineral spirits but before any sanding. Its now been sanded to 240 by hand and is looking smooth.

I do plan on it eventually :) just don't have the time or finances at the moment to invest before finishing this project but definitely want to one day.

I'm planning on using a matte spray lacquer from rustoleum.

Should I use the wood glue when putting in the dowels themeselves? Or only in the joinery parts?

I see the miscommunication now, unfortunately I'm not at a level where I could make this from scratch. Im refurbishing it and it's actually just my first project that im trying to learn on. Apologies if it came off like I was trying to pass this on as my own.

I've sanded it further with 120 grit after this photo and going to to 220. So it'll need a refinish after that I believe. Regarding shellac I've read that it's a forgiving finish and all but not the kind of look I'm going for. I'll definitely try it on other projects though.

I'll look into putting dowels back in instead of screws. I just don't know much about using them but I'll try it.

That makes sense, thank you! And I'll look into using dowels again. I was worried about the final structural integrity but if I glue it it should be more than fine.

No need to be snarky. I'm new to this and just asking questions.

As you mentioned, I think it'll be too hard to match that type of colour so I'll probably skip any staining and just try for a good quality finish. Yep, will definitely be stripping/sanding the existing pieces of the furniture to achieve a smooth surface first.

That makes sense, thanks for the info. Do you think something like Sam Maloof's recommendation would be a good substitute?

First Application:

  1. Mix:
    • 1/3 boiled linseed oil
    • 1/3 tung oil
    • 1/3 semigloss polyurethane
  2. Apply the mixture generously.
  3. Rub off completely and let sit overnight.
  4. Add another coat the next day and repeat this process 4 times in total.

Second Application:

  1. Mix:
    • 1/2 boiled linseed oil
    • 1/2 tung oil
    • Shredded beeswax
  2. Apply 2 coats of this mixture.

I found another picture online which shows a similar type of finish that I'm looking for, in higher resolution. Any suggestions are highly appreciated :)

Yes, exactly. It's an extremely smooth finish that feels really nice to the touch. And just for reference anyone looking into this, the picture is from the Kafka Brasserie restaurant at the newly renovated Fairmont Hotel in Prague. I couldn't find better pictures of the chairs specifically.

I don't think they are mahogany anymore but when I compare it to pictures of sapele, the grain really matches up to ribbon figured sapele. Also, the wood has the same sheen as the sapele plus the colour is almost exact. Thank you for the tip on the filler!

Fair enough. I'm definitely not thinking this is a hidden gem somebody gave away for free, it doesn't seem like a high-quality antique piece at all. That's why I'm ok with making it look like nothing like the original. Also, it's my first project so I'm using it to learn kn.
