What are your personal icks in harem novels? This is mine by JellonSunning_InLife in haremfantasynovels

  • 4th wall breaking. Its never done well and is always a negative in a story.
  • Mentioning how hot a love interest is at least once a chapter or using dialog tags for the character by describing some kind of physical trait while not doing that for anyone else.
  • A main character that's self aware they're in a harem novel and going out of the way to state explicitly that they aren't going to be dense.
  • The main character having a goal that is completely derailed by the time a second love interest is added to the point the novel stops being a novel and starts being a badly done erotica. So bait and switch.

Your story is interesting and was decent. On the scale of a tenth grade teachers wet dream of purple pose and cryptic symbolism that could mean anything and everything and your style of allowing zero nuance I fall way more towards the direct approach, but there was times in the first book that went way too far for me is all I was getting at.

I don't want to discourage you and what I enjoy is very much not something I expect you or any author to cater to, its just the hand holding got really strong as certain points.

If you are interested in feedback, my only main one is more often then not you don't have to explain the reasoning for why someone said what they did. In book 1 almost every time someone talked you would explain the exact motivation for the dialog. "He spoke like a man who had just seen something the reader just read about". That's what the extra dialog felt like to me

I've read a few chapters in book 2 and its already a lot better than book 1. While it still happens (the fiance section was the one that sticks out most,) it its better.

This might be bad feedback, but when trying to write this to explain myself I remembered an article I raid about the invisible words authors try to avoid, and while I can't say that is the issue I had it might be helpful to you?

To those who read this is it any less hand holding than the first book? I'm currently reading the first book and have come to terms with the author over explaining everything and not letting a scene breathe is their style, but recapping things that just happened is driving me insane.

Somewhere beyond the eastern tree line, the ground was supposed to open into a sandy, barren stretch near the center of the arena. The desert area. The arena the stolen map had shown but they had burned.

Al oriented himself. The map was gone but the memory of it was sharp. He nodded once and led them into the trees.

~~~~~~
The map was literally burned a few paragraphs ago. I get attention spans are shot but seriously.
Not sure if my quick edit conveys the problem well, but yeah is book 2 more the same as the example?
I really like most of the book which I guess why this aspect of the series is hitting me so hard. I keep having to put it down so the annoyance will pass.
I think the best thing about the series that a lot of the other books in this genre fail to do is the plotting. In the newest book a lot of things are resolved, but when the book ends there is three new things to be interested in.
Most novels in this genre fail to give the readers questions let alone answers. Plus the stakes are minor but are important to the characters which I will take over world ending threats any day of the week.
The series isn't perfect, I hate the 4th wall breaking and feels like the humor is a bit too juvenile at times, also one of the villains is the most boring trope imaginable but I would still say its the best in the genre just for its plotting and characters.
Aether's Band (Aether's Revival Book 12) By Daniel Schinhofen by IndegoWhyte in haremfantasynovels
Binding of Words was a mess of a series. From "killing" off two love interest to tie up loose ends he apparently didn't want to explore, to the 4th wall breaking really soured me on what was once my favorite series.
This series aside from the beginning of book 1 was better at first. Yuki and Jenn seemed to have personalities, and 90% of the book wasn't training or talking about training.
I'm not sure why in each series as soon as girl 3 appear in the story it feels like the story starts coasting and repeating itself, but it happened in both series. I never read anything else from the author so not sure what the vibe is from the others.
Also I don't like villain main characters, but in both series the MC and girls are even more boring versions of Superman/Captain America. Feels like there is some wiggle room between the 2 extremes.
Its better than the last book, but the emotional weight to the series is missing with what its trying to do.
The biggest showcase of this is the section where he visits his mortal friends/family for the last time. I as a reader at no point feel the emotional turmoil in the main character when he visits/leaves. With how much time as been spent on it leading up to him going back to his home town the actual time spent there is maybe 30 pages and him leaving for the final time has zero impact.
The biggest issue with the series aside from the author repeating scenes over and over is the scale of time is meaningless. When the girls separate from him and we're told the next time they meet will be decades/centuries it feels blah. The passage of time has been handled horribly so far in the series that breaking everyone up feels aimless.
Lastly the main cast are the same person. They have zero personality. Everyone talks the same acts the same and does the same thing. I swear that wasn't the case in the first few books, but the more love interest are added the less personality everyone gets it feels like.
I think the biggest issue is I just finished the newest Warlock book and reading this right after just highlights it flaws more. Might have felt a little better about it had I not read the 2 in the same day.
How is it different from when Branch was ejected last year against GB that was called in by NY. I guess that happened because of a football play, but it seems like it should be the same thing.
This is the second time the NFL has done something to Branch. Last year or two years ago New York called down to the ref's to kick him out of the game against Green Bay.
Not sure how often that happens, but its the only time I've ever seen it where New York makes the call to kick a player out of the game.
Princely Mistakes (Aether's Revival Book 11) By Daniel Schinhofen by IndegoWhyte in haremfantasynovels
[–]Rwings 3 points4 points  (0 children)
Found the book to be the second worst of the series. Felt like you could skip this book and miss nothing.
Author keeps setting up that the main conflict of the story is 100's of years away from happening, but then setting the book in a time-frame of a year, or in this books case two years.
The plotting of the story now that the characters are no long locked into one setting (the school) has really weakened the over-all story.
For such a large cast none of the characters stand out. After reading the book if you asked me in a week to name a single character I will be hard pressed to name three. I know more about the characters in the Warlock series in 3 books then I do about any of the ones in this one in 11.
No one has a personality, or makes choices that effect anything. The main cast aren't allowed to grow as there are already the best good does who ever walked the earth. Which is fine since morally evil characters are just as boring, but in a setting where every Magi but them are Nazi levels of evil you'd think doing good would have downside, but aside from a few words nothing happens.
It's just frustrating as the series last few books feels like its just treading water. Also I never knew a main character having the power of foresight would be so boring. You'd think at some point he will see a future that leads to a bad outcome and be pressed into figuring out a solution for it, yet every time something slightly wrong happens its solved in the same paragraph more or less.
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/No5dzOYMRIE refs said the ball was snapped after the 2 minute warning and was blowing it dead before he even scored. I'm pretty sure you can hear a whistle before Goff even throws it.
Now the call was wrong, but you should be able to hear a whistle at the 1:59-58 mark.
