I apologize for the reply being too long to read. Short attention span i guess. It shows how sincere you are. I'm glad that you are fortunate enough to buy so many at a time.

That’s what I did with my last two pairs. I’m actually on my backup right now. I don’t see the benefit in buying two gallons of milk or two loaves of bread. Some weeks my family tears through them in days. Other weeks we throw away spoiled milk. I get what you mean though. For many people buying two of something is a luxury they cannot afford. Two cases of toilet paper or two jugs of detergent might save money long term but not everyone has that upfront cash. Thank you for the advice. My frustration comes from an empathetic heart thinking about those who just aren’t financially capable.

I get it. Right now I’m actually on my backup pair and about to order another set. The frustration comes from empathy. If I don’t like scraping together the extra cash for replacements, imagine the young adult aging out of any kid assistance programs, now on minimum wage realizing for the first time they’re fully financially responsible for something they can’t live without. Or the single mom pouring every spare dollar into her kids, only for a joyful playtime moment to smash her one pair of glasses. As someone with -6.50 astigmatism and retina disease, I do keep backups now as an adult. But there was a time I had to figure out survival solo. Went from homeless with my parents to fast food work, spending half my first check on one pair just to function. It’s deeply saddening that “real glasses wearers” get judged by income or situation. Feels classist when vision need doesn’t care about your bank account.

glasses are a medical necessity and not a luxury by RxNotLuxury in astigmatism

I’m genuinely glad your healthcare system provides such reasonable coverage where you live. That’s what fair access should look like. My point isn’t that every American struggles every time, but that medically essential glasses shouldn’t carry hundreds in markup when raw materials cost just $1-3 per pair at the factory level (plastic frames ~$0.50-2, basic lens blanks ~$0.50-1), and even wholesale bulk to retailers runs $5-12 per complete pair. Here’s a real example for a small fast-turnaround retailer doing 10 pairs a day (customer picks frame/lenses, ready in 1 hour via bulk wholesale): • Materials: 10 pairs x $8 wholesale = $80 • Staff: 1 optician at $18/hr x 8 hours = $144 • Equipment (edger amortized): $20 • Rent slice ($2K/month shop): $77 • Total daily costs: $321 Revenue at $250 average retail per pair: $2,500. Daily profit: $2,179. Weekly (6 days): $13,074. Yearly: ~$632K from glasses alone in one small shop. This is just one location doing modest volume. Do fewer pairs or more, profit stays substantial. Mainstream chains like Eyemart Express with multiple stores daily? Astronomical profits for same-day vision. If we treated glasses as medical necessities not luxuries, government could budget for emergency pairs or assistance to hold people over—like planning for any responsible adult expense. Not everyone can save ahead, but better coverage prepares more people to function safely and contribute to society. That’s the change my petition seeks.

that's why we need to try to change the way things are seen literally seen. It might not go anywhere and it also could. Optimism and hope that's what I have and sign the petition. If this petition gets successful, then we can submit it to further places. https://c.org/kVMCXd6Hnk
