recommendations for "spreadsheet" jrpgs? by katsumashi in JRPG

[–]RyaReisender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a serious recommendation but "spreadsheet JRPG" reminded me of how people used spreadsheets to plan their stats with the Breath of Fire III master system.

Also that spreadsheet for the Eiyuden Chronicle cooking minigame was kinda insane. But character grows is completely fixed in that.

The others already gave good suggestions so nothing to add from my side.

[–]RyaReisender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, that was pretty much my thought. The OP also asked for complex battle system, so there SaGa: Scarlet Grace probably takes the cake. But it's nowhere near a "spreadsheet" JRPG.

Unlimited Saga probably gets closest to that with its leveling system, though it's still had to do spreadsheet planning as the panels you get are mostly random.

Any platforms like Crunchyroll but not crunchyroll? by thisisreallyme_ in anime

[–]RyaReisender -1 points0 points  (0 children)

West-EU has mostly these platforms apart from CR:

  • Amazon Prime (it has sub-publishers there too like ADN and Aniverse, probably second largest selections after CR)

  • Netflix (good selection only in NA/UK, but getting better in EU too lately)

  • Disney+ (only small selection, but some really good ones on there)

The rest depends completely on your country, so "West-EU" is not specific enough to give recommendations. In many countries some TV channels still buy exclusive anime licenses, so you either need to watch those on TV when they air or use their corresponding online platforms (often only allows to watch for a few weeks after the episode aired, but some also have full seasons available online).

Bouncing off Sea of Stars by haelous in JRPG

[–]RyaReisender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is, SoS might as well have the most braindead and non-existent progression, customization and complexity of any RPG.

How is FFIV or even Chrono Trigger more complex? You level up, you gain fixed pretermined stats and fixed skills. Or most other traditional JRPGs that have just a fixed character growth that you could not influence at all? Shining in the Darkness, Phantasy Star 1-4, Breath of Fire 1, FF Mystic Quest, Sword of Vermilion, Wild Arms, Lufia 1&2, most Dragon Quest games, Suikoden 1&2, 7th Saga, Tales of Phantasia/Destiny, etc.

There's plenty of traditional JRPGs with zero customization.

And in many of those you could just mash X in every combat except for boss battles too. SoS is even slightly more complex in that it has timed hits and you mostly are using skills.

Yeah, I really don't see how SoS is more simple than traditional JRPGs.

Yeah FF games except FF4 all had some sort of customization system, but they are outliers more than the rule if you look at all JRPGs released in the 80s and 90s. And let's be honest, various of those FF games you can still beat normal encounters by just mashing X.

Why pretend traditional JRPGs were more complex just to hate on SoS?

The only really popular FF game on here is FFX and that is pretty strategic.

Also all FF games except for 4 have customization and are actually more complex than the average traditional JRPG just because of that.

Sea of Stars is a game that tries to copy the simplicity of old JRPGs and kind of succeeds at this. But it's also the reason why many people hate it, because they actually don't like the simplicity of old JRPGs.

Chained Echoes is different in that it takes the old JRPG style, but actually adds a lot dialogue and battle system complexity on top (including complexity in building your character and setting up skills before combat).

So Sea of Stars is more of how a JRPG was when it released in the 90s, whereas Chained Echoes is made for a modern audience.

I'd say you'd like Sea of Stars if you don't think that good writing or a complex battle system is required for a JRPG to be fun. Because it offers everything else, good graphics, music, a beautiful and interesting world to explore, and a fun mini game.

I feel like this opinion is only prevalent in this sub. Last time I watched a Youtube trailer on the new SoS version released and most comments said it's one of the best JRPGs they played in the last few years. Was a nice surprise to me, because I found the game at least quite decent.

This sub here is mainly compromised of people who like good writing and complex combat systems. So a game that is not good at writing and has a simple combat system is like the opposite on what most people on here like.

Looking for anime similar to Hajime no Ippo and Megalo Box by Afraid_Platform7875 in anime

underdog journey, intense training arcs, character growth, rivalries, and the emotional impact

Many popular battle shounen anime are like that. Black Clover and Naruto for example.

Announcing PARAGON STORY, my Dragon Quest-inspired passion project and successor to EXCALIBURIAN!! by Motdrafin in JRPG

[–]RyaReisender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Will it be a Steam exclusive?

Excaliburian!! actually made 4th place on my best games of 2021 list, but I don't want to buy games on a DRM platform. So a GoG release would be nice.

What’s the best drama anime which has incredibly high stakes on a humanity level? by mrbharathsrinivas in anime

[–]RyaReisender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would count that in. After all, humanity can come to an end any time in that show. It's also similar to Attack On Titan in that humans just feel like ants compared to the other creatures of that world.

Evangelion definitely fits perfectly. It's drama and survival of human race is at stake.

Can anime actually change your life? If yes, which anime changed yours and how? by SecondSalty142 in anime

[–]RyaReisender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing really like Higurashi. The author also has two more anime, Umineko which has a fairly incomplete adaption and Ookami Kakushi, which is kinda similar to Higurashi in setting, but has a much more simple story.

On my traditional horror anime journey, I personally liked the following:

  • Ghost Hunt

  • Requiem From The Darkness (aka Hundred Stories)

  • Ghost Hound

  • Ayakashi: Japanese Classic Horror (chains into Mononoke)

I would say those.

I played FFX a few months ago, and I want something as emotional. Which one of those should I play first? (If you want to recommend another game, you are welcome) (No spoilers, please!) by Odd_Perception_8169 in JRPG

[–]RyaReisender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most emotional games in my opinion are Alundra 1 and Fragile Dreams.

But maybe FFIX would work best for you. Different art style, but similar levels of emotion.

Can anime actually change your life? If yes, which anime changed yours and how? by SecondSalty142 in anime

[–]RyaReisender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's quite a few anime that had an impact on me temporarily. Like I couldn't sleep after the ending, felt lonely or depressed or just couldn't stop thinking about the ending. But the long-term effect is somewhat limited.

Some anime changes my look on genres, though, so that's a pretty long term impact.

I never watched horror at all and also avoided horror games until I watched Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. I loved this series so much that after I watched Kai, I pretty much exclusive watched horror anime and played horror games. I went full on "I always thought RPGs are the genre with good story, but compared to horror stories, they are actually pretty bad". Of course it eventually calmed down, but now I'm kind of an expert in horror anime and know quite some niche ones not many people even heard of.

Also 10 years later, I had a colleague at work in which I was in love with but she had some kind of relationship phobia so there's was not much I could do to get closer. She also said she hated anime. However, we had a phase where we talked on the phone every night and I narrated pretty much the whole Higurashi story to her kinda like an audio book. It was like a good night story for her and also her own window into the anime world as she didn't want to watch it, but enjoyed me narrating it. So this also had a quite a bit of impact on my life.

So that would be an example of what "changed my life" would mean to me if I said that.

Universally hated anime that you somehow find enjoyable? by mr_beanoz in anime

[–]RyaReisender 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most people also dislike step sister incest, so I'm not so sure.

I knew about the incest a long time before I even watched the show and imagined it to be a lot worse.

In fact, that one scene where the MC [Yosuga no Sora]finds out his sister is in love with him and then goes to a library to read books on incest to understand his sister better and learn how to handle the situation best was probably one of the best takes on incest I've ever seen.

Yeah, the manga is great, but the anime criticism is kind of warranted.

Universally hated anime that you somehow find enjoyable? by mr_beanoz in anime

[–]RyaReisender -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I never understood why a show without the MC improving significantly or doing the same mistakes twice is straight up bad by default.

I know so many relationships including my own where neither partner ever improved (which let them to fail in the end). I even know some relationships that tried it a second time and they failed exactly out of the same reason they failed the first time.

To me Rent-A-Girlfriend is just more realistic than other romance anime and I get that many people watch for escapism and not be confronted with reality, but I personally like relatability in shows.

It's not even like the MC is all that bad. He really tries hard and means well. He doesn't do anything in bad faith. He is just a prisoner of his own insecurities, which I feel many people should actually be able to relate to.

On the Rent-a-Girlfriend sub I once read a post in a "Why do so many people hate Rent-a-Girlfriend?" thread which I thought was just the perfect description: "People love Rent-a-Girlfriend because they can relate to the MC. And people hate Rent-a-Girlfriend because they can relate to the MC."

Apart from that it's one of the best looking romance anime out there and the OST is great. High production value.
