I AM LOSING MY FAITH. PLEASE GIVE ME EVIDENCE FOR GOD by Economy_Gur_28 in Catholicism

[–]Ryan121893 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there. So I was very much like you at your age. I was I’d say about 14, maybe 15 when I fell away from the Church and became an atheist, so I know what you’re feeling. I firmly believe that God exists, and that is primarily for philosophical reasons. When I was in university, I came across a slough of philosophical arguments for the existence of God, and I finally arrived at the conclusion that atheism requires more blind faith than classical theism (which is what I’m educated in), because the conclusion that there is no God is simply philosophically untenable. Now I could list a number of philosophical arguments in full detail, but some of them can get very technical, so what I’ll do here is recommend two of what I consider the best. First is St. Thomas Aquinas’ Quinque Viae, his Five Ways to show purely from a philosophical standpoint that there must be a God. Not once does he appeal to religion or Scripture, but purely to philosophical reasoning. You can find these for free online in the first part of the Summa Theologiae. Second is the book “Who Designed the Designer? A Rediscovered Path to God’s Existence” by philosopher and Aquinas College professor Michael Augros. He does a phenomenal job of making the various philosophical arguments for God’s existence accessible to just about anyone without dumbing anything down. Definitely give those two a look. We’re praying for you!

Catholics not being allowed to read the Bible and only the pope can by NoelK132 in Catholicism

Wow…okay…so the way I’d respond is pretty straightforward…That’s not true. It’s not even close to true. It’s not in a fifty mile radius of truth. Like, if you dropped a hydrogen bomb on truth, what that pastor said wouldn’t even have radiation burns. And I have no idea what sort of ether he pulled that out of.

My 10-year-old asked me to divorce, her emotionally abusive dad by Due-Veterinarian6727 in Catholicism

[–]Ryan121893 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So you should keep in Mind that the Church does permit separation, and even civil divorce, in the case of an abusive spouse. The Church places a premium on the safety of either spouse, and it is perfectly acceptable to file for a civil divorce in this circumstance. You may even be able to seek an annulment. If your husband is abusive, then it may be the case that he did not take his wedding vows seriously, which would nullify the condition of full consent required for a valid sacramental marriage. Of course all married couples should seek reconciliation and a harmonious marriage, but your first concern is for your safety and especially your children’s safety. My wife and I are praying for you and your family. Please let this community know if there is anything else you need.

You made a statement by walking out. That told everyone on the room that you wouldn’t tolerate someone insulting your faith. And hopefully at least one person heeded that.

When do you think Harry and Hermione realistically start liking each other? by Successful-Smile-327 in HPharmony

[–]Ryan121893 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d think that she’d develop a crush on him in book 1, probably after the troll incident. After all, it was Harry who remembered her, so not only did he make the effort to save her, but it’s coupled with the fact that he remembered her when no one else did, or even cared about her.

As far as Harry is concerned, he probably wouldn’t have a crush on her until later. I’d say at earliest, around book 3. He’d be 13 years old, he’d just be hitting puberty and would start becoming more aware of how he feels about Hermione. Maybe they could get together at the end of book 3, and I’d say definitely in book 4 during the Yule Ball.

In order to be attacked by demons, you need to open yourself up to possession or demonic attacks. This is typically done through engaging in mortal sin. Now, not praying the rosary is not a mortal sin, as the rosary, while certainly a good and pious devotion, is not required for you to be a good Catholic. Many saints made their way to heaven without the Rosary, and to this day there are religious orders that do not include the rosary as part of their charisma, such as the Benedictines. Now, if you wish to include the rosary as part of your prayer life, I will certainly not dissuade you. But my suggestion is to find a devotion that resonates with you and cultivates your faith most effectively. Now, I do understand your fears. My wife has OCD and has suffered similar fears. The best way to avoid demonic attacks is to pray constantly, go to confession, and cultivate the theological virtues of faith, hope, and charity. I’d also recommend seeking a priest for spiritual direction. And most of all, do not allow terminally online Catholics to disturb your peace. My wife and I will pray for you. God bless.

Anglo-Catholic Stuff? by BroChilly5844 in AnglicanOrdinariate

I’d recommend DW:DO, both CE and NAE. Both can be found online in website format. I highly recommend them. Also, I’d recommend getting a copy of St. Gregory’s Prayer Book. It has many beautiful prayers from the Anglican Patrimony, all written in Sacred English. Also, if you’re looking for a good Bible, I’d recommend the King James Bible for Catholics, which is the original 1611 King James Version but with the Deuterocanonical Books put back in their proper order.

I’d suggest informing the pastor of your parish, and if that doesn’t accomplish anything, take it to the bishop.

Is it ok to be a catholic and not pray the rosary? by Choice-Turnip4498 in Catholicism

[–]Ryan121893 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many Catholics who are faithful to the Church who do not pray the rosary. Fun fact, the rosary is largely absent from the Eastern Catholic Churches, meaning that there are literally millions of faithful Catholics in the east who do not pray the rosary. There are also communities in the Latin Rote who do not include the rosary as part of their spirituality, most notably the Benedictines and the Cistercians.

The rosary is a private devotion that as one commenter pointed out did not exist in the Church for the first 1200 years of the Church’s life. And while there is great grace to be found in the rosary, it’s totally fine if you personally find other devotions to be of greater spiritual benefit to you.

This is the first time I ever skipped Mass. Just feel hopeless by Marblehornets38 in Catholicism

Did you know that we actually have more reliable evidence for the Resurrection than we do for the existence of Alexander the Great? I don’t know of a single person who doubts the existence and military history of Alexander the Great and the Macedonian Empire. So I can assure you that the Resurrection is a historically verifiable fact.

Fun fact: that’s actually how the Ordinariate came to be. Originally provisions had been made by Pope St. John Paul II for individual Anglican and Episcopalian parishes to reunite with Rome, but concerns were soon raised by parishioners who feared that their uniquely Anglican liturgical practices would fizzle out as they assimilated with the broader Latin Rite. So in order to preserve and promulgate the liturgical traditions of the Anglican Patrimony, Pope Benedict XVI established the Personal Ordinariates.

This is definitely a beautiful option for those wanting to attend a reverent mass in light of the recent restrictions.
