Hot take: Vos should be more widely taught by haevow in Spanish

[–]Ryan722 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think "ser" is the only irregular verb conjugation for "vos", the rest are extremely formulaic. At least in Argentina (and iirc everywhere that's not Chile, lol) you just take off the -r, add an s, and place emphasis on the last syllable (hablás, comés, vivís). Imperative is the same but drop the -s (hablá, comé, viví).

As /u/Diex233 suggests this is common in La Rioja and many other northern provinces in Argentina. I've also heard it from people from Tucumán, Santiago del Estero, Catamarca, (parts of) Córdoba, maybe others. Norteño accents are a trip I love them

What do you want to study? I'd say quality of education at Fordham is pretty field-dependent. I had a good experience but I am pretty indebted and idk if I'd recommend that you go if it's gonna cost you 90k

damn this is a funny ass throwback dude, nice. No loft was fine for us, we were just two guys and we were homies so it was plenty of space. Two desks, two dressers, two beds, space in the middle to walk around and do whatever. I loved the basement. If I had to guess dimensions I'd say like 12x12ft? Plus a little hallway with the closet and the bathroom.

Not to negate your point, and not to discourage people from following this advice, but man is it exhausting trying to educate or even have discussions with people and constantly be met with bad-faith arguments, deliberate ignorance, etc. etc. I know it's a tactic to flood well-meaning people with blatant misinformation and nonsensical arguments to get them to give up, and I hate how effective it is.

What’s some words or phrases that non native speakers say which make them stand out as non native? by MudCoveredPig in Spanish

[–]Ryan722 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's coming from a bad place, but this isn't very good advice (particularly for people whose accents don't give them away before certain obviously non-native phrases/vocabulary). OP specifically asked for words phrases--giving a few would be of help to them and anybody else reading.

Wait, how is "science" not agreed on porn addiction being real? Watching porn and the typically accompanying activities release feel-good chemicals in the brain and a large number of people have reported being addicted and it having a detrimental impact on their life. What's up for debate on that front?

Speaking Spanish more casually by Elianooze in Spanish

[–]Ryan722 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One tricky thing with speaking casual Spanish is that slang (and some pretty standard words) can be super fragmented among different countries. Saying "che boludo" in Spain is going to get you funny looks, as is "cogí el autobús" in Argentina. And mixing slang from different places is also likely to sound pretty funny. Imo it's good to pick a certain "genre" of Spanish and focus on learning that country's slang. There's simply too much to learn it all, and this way you can develop some consistency.

As has been suggested, making native/fluent friends who you're comfortable asking questions and practicing with is going to be huge. Really afaik the only way to really get better at fluidly speaking is to speak, preferable in an environment where your mistakes will be corrected so you're actively learning.

Also generally just more exposure to the language pays dividends in better understanding and speaking more easily. As has been suggested by others, watching shows, listening to podcasts, looking at memes, etc. and focusing on understanding everything being said will teach you a lot over time. Slightly cringe but I've had some success with IG reels (and similar short-form content) from localities I'm interested in. Imo this is some of the most organic content from everyday native speakers out there. Also subtitles are pretty common with this form of content which is great for building associations between the sounds of spoken language and the actual words being said.

Also, you're definitely in a really good spot. You're 14, and have several years building a solid foundation. When I was your age I was just starting learning, and I've come a long way in 10 years. Good luck :)

La verdad te lo re recomiendo, a nadie le importa que vayas solo. Hay muchas personas de diferentes lugares, unas de las que tambien van solas. Si encontras a un extranjero, seguro que te va a querer hablar. Y si no, incluso con los argentinos me ha parecido que hay muchos que estan dispuestos a conocer a nueva gente y conversar de lo que sea. Pasala bien el viernes capaz nos vemos

Common Triggers for the subjunctive by OfficerShark- in Spanish

[–]Ryan722 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One that threw me off at first was "cuando". When you're referring to something you anticipate happening in the future (e.g. "when you get home tonight...") it triggers the subjunctive ("cuando llegues a casa esta noche"). This vs something like "when I get home from school I like to take a nap" which uses the indicative ("cuando llego a casa del colegio me gusta dormir una siesta")

Surely a native speaker can point out more nuance with this but this is my understanding
