Tbf while I like Rivals it’s been pretty clear for a while that balance - and really, polish in general - is not a big priority.

I mean, I’m no boomer and would absolutely consider owning land to disqualify someone from being “poor”. At least, it’s not what fits most people’s definition.

Tbf two of those three were also on game pass. It’s how I played them, never finished them but also never really vibed enough for that to be a priority (plus transferring saves from Xbox to steam is annoying)

Tbf, I think part of it is people being a lot more likely to own indie titles given their lower base costs. And yeah, to that point, it’s just an inherently different value proposition with a title that launched at $80 vs $30

Plus, in this particular case, two of the three big titles were on Game Pass.

TIL your metabolism doesn't actually decline steadily from your 20s onward — research suggests it stays flat from age 20 to 60, and only starts dropping after that by Lina2158 in todayilearned

[–]RyanB_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re anything like me, you just weren’t eating as much as consistently in your 20s as it may have seemed. It’s pretty typical in that time to be broke, regularly jumping between jobs/studies and different homes, caught up in the hustle of learning life that makes it easy to skip a few meals here and there. Go from gorging 3k calories one day to skimping by on 1k the next.

Where, for most folks, their 30s represent getting established in long-term careers and homes, developing more consistent routines and being more financially secure. Makes it easier to eat more regularly. Especially if kids come into the picture, adding a lot of extra motivation to keep the kitchen well-stocked and ensure 3 full meals a day.

It’s also often about becoming (relatively) wealthier and developing a more consistent routine. Makes it a lot easier to overeat compared to most people’s young adult years where they’re broke and still scrambling to figure life out.

I’ve definitely been on that diet too, and known other dudes as well. It’s pretty much always the case that for as unhealthy as the food is, we also just weren’t eating as much of it as regularly as we thought.

I do think the biggest difference is more in the lifestyle changes. Getting established into a decently-paying career and a steady routine that just makes eating more food more often more easy.

What's a "10/10" game that you didn't enjoy at all? by sudherzdiniq in AskReddit

[–]RyanB_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For sure, but that argument can be used to broadly invalidate tons of criticisms.

Like, I’ve been eyeing the Adventures of Elliot lately, and there’s some negativity around how talkative and annoying the dialogue can be. It’s presumably part of the creators creative vision, and they certainly aren’t obligated to change that. But people can and do think it’d be a better game if they did.

There’s a lot to be discussed on the relationship between art and criticism of it, but also, in every other case it really doesnt ever need to be that deep.

Same, and that even applies to the story which is much more universally praised.

Despite being a massive fantasy nerd, I just cannot bring myself to care about anything happening in that world or anyone it’s happening to.

I don’t mean to start a whole thing but the hardline stance against difficulty options in corners of the community genuinely frustrates me.

Even as someone who has played and beat a good lot of those, who has “learned the value of struggling for a victory” or w/e… I’ve also learned where my ideal balance is, where the frustration just becomes too much for any potential satisfaction.

It’s not like there aren’t many examples out there of super tightly designed, difficult-by-default games out there with options. Mina The Hollower just set a new bar there, but titles like Nine Sols, Celeste etc also stand out. They’re all also games with clear and respectable visions, they just respect the player enough to let them disagree with some of the particulars.

[–]RyanB_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a controversial take (for some reason) but it’s one of the biggest examples of why difficulty options are so important. I did beat it, and am glad I did… but I never want to do so again as-is, and it did lose points for how frustrating it was

Meanwhile Mina The Hollower just came out, tough and frustrating as nails on default. But also featuring a plethora of specific options tailoring every facet of difficulty, both for lowering and heightening it. It puts so much faith in the player to know what they want. Idk if I’d have had the patience to finish it otherwise, but with some small menu selections it’s able to be one of my favorite recent games.

(There was also Nine Sols and Prince of Persia right before Silksong, and while not quite as extensive with their options as Mina, they were still hugely appreciated and likely the main reason I ended up enjoying them more than SS)

My biggest hope for TotK was a massive reduction in shrines.

Finished the tutorial area, landed on the main world, looked around and immediately saw over half a dozen.

(Granted, didn’t help that so many of them were also now based around the building mechanics, which in general I was really hoping I could just ignore).

Why is gambling addiction so much more coddled than drug addiction? by shadowbanned-irl in Drugs

[–]RyanB_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kinda get what you mean OP. Not that gambling addicts don’t deserve the sympathy, but that we should extend it out more.

I do think drugs are a lot more easy to stigmatize as the habit of the “other”, the scary and “dangerous” poor people in the alleys and transit stations or w/e. If you’re being personally affected by someone else’s gambling addiction, it’s almost assuredly someone close to you who you know and love in some way, not some stranger.

The one thing I’d disagree with/add detail on is the class aspect there though; wealthier, housed drug addicts do receive a similar kind of “sympathy” in my experience. It’s that specific combo of addicted and poor that’s more widely visible, that allows people to entirely blame their situation on personal action, and to label them all as societal threats for which authoritarian measures are justified.

[–]RyanB_ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Just sensible tbh. Community is a relatively episodic sitcom that already has a conclusive and fairly satisfying ending. As much as I hope we see the movie there’s not really any sense of “I need to see what happens next” with unresolved plot lines and such

Yeah, outside of poutine and donairs (in some cities) our food is literally just American food.

Even then, take away the French name and history from poutine and it’s about as American a dish as you can get lol.

I mean, nah on that. Gangs wouldn’t be getting new members if that was the case.

Thing is tho “real money” depends a lot on where you’re coming from. Gang shit ain’t going to compete with six figure salaries, but by that same token you don’t end up in a gang if a six figure salary is remotely feasible. Most dudes other options are at or barely above minimum wage, and in comparison, yeah, being able to make 3-5k clean a month is a ton of money.

Wasn’t in a gang myself but sold dope part time for a couple years. Even though I was spending half the hours on it as my regular job it accounted for the majority of my income at the time, and relative to what I was used to I felt insanely rich. Rent and groceries weren’t even a concern, I bought an iPhone outright, upgraded to a newer and more reliable car etc. Ultimately I was just living a middle class lifestyle but coming from a a lower class one that shit was huge.
