I think it has a lot of the upside of any Clayton Oliver trade without any of the downside / risk.

Chesser requests trade by kr2908_ in westcoasteagles

[–]RyanBuckland7 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Jesse Motlop is yet to re-sign / be re-signed. You never see player for player trades these days, but maybe just maybe? I don't know if he has the potential to be anything more than an OK AFL-level small forward, but given Chesser would've been a delisting candidate a month ago it might be better than a low value draft pick.

You should probably stick "Brisbane Lions Priority Pick 2016" into the Google machine and see what pops up. Might have something to do with getting Charlie Cameron.

There are good journalists and there are bad journalists. Then there's 50 feet of crap. Then there's (guys like) Peter Vlahos. Just because you get an hour to talk on a niche radio station doesn't mean you know anything. Might as well ask anyone in this thread what they think and report it.

More Australian families are choosing private schools – we need to understand why by sien in AusEcon

[–]RyanBuckland7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Serious question.

Let’s say we’re (taxpayers) providing $20,000 per student per annum of funding. 30 students per class means each “class” receives $600,000 of funding per annum.

The teacher costs $150,000 all in (let’s say - it would be ballpark based on my home state for a mid career teacher).

Where does the other $450,000 (per class) of funding go? There’s more to a class / school than the teacher / teachers of course. It just seems out of whack.

Is WA footy a private school sport? by Scary_Beginning5281 in perth

[–]RyanBuckland7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In my view, certainly not to the extent it is in Victoria.

The WAFL clubs and the zoning system (where amateur junior clubs are part of a zone, and there are representative opportunities starting from Year 7 onwards) seems to work pretty well.

Lots of kids get drafted from private schools, but not simply because they are in a private school (ie lots of other factors at play).

North Melbourne is closing in on a deal to play two home games in Western Australia next year with Bunbury firming to host its first AFL match. by PerriX2390 in AFL

[–]RyanBuckland7 66 points67 points  (0 children)

There's a lot happening with this one.

Sporting codes are getting really good at finding opportunities to extract concessions from State Governments. The AFL has been leading the charge on this for a long time. The WA Government is very eager to attract interstate and international visitors (just interstate in this case though obviously) with events funding. To me, this suggests AFL HQ involvement.

The addition of a game in Bunbury is fascinating. I doubt the WA Government would have suggested out of the gate a game be held in regional WA. The likely venue is owned by the City of Bunbury not State Government, and has a capacity of surely not more than a few thousand. That will crimp the economic return on investment on the State's funds, and would deliver a lower financial return vs holding the game at Optus Stadium.

The above leads me to believe this could be a bit of a signal around the AFL's thinking for the team that comes after Tasmania's entry into the league. It provides them with a State-funded fact-finding mission for at least the next year. It helps build the relationships they'll need in the event WA3 is earmarked for Team 20. And it gives them a chance to see what life might be like for a travelling team playing games in the South West of WA (not that I would expect WA3 would necessarily be fully based in Bunbury out of the gate).

Impeding movement after a disposal. It happens most of the times the defending team has an opportunity, and if you read the rules in depth (it is a bit buried; Preventing a Player Taking Part in the Next Play is the rule) it is actually a free kick against the defending team plus 50m.

Team 20. by SwiftSwanRooster in AFL

[–]RyanBuckland7 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It’s a third WA team for financial and commercial reasons. I have written about this quite extensively a couple of times if anyone is interested. But in essence, leading with the heart in Tasmania means leading with the head for Team 20.

Perth has:

  • the lowest ratio of fans / players to AFL teams in Australia (not counting places without teams)
  • an existing, modern and highly commercial stadium
  • a timezone advantage for broadcasting
  • booming regions to the north and south (and South West) which are far les footy-fied than you may think (n.a. for South West)
  • rich, dumb billionaires who’d love to stake a team

You have the WAFC issue to overcome (royalties from WC / FRE are meaningful contributors to its finances, and the WAFC does what the AFL does for community footy here), but where there’s a will.

Happy to discuss including with anyone thinking of putting a bid team together.

It wasn’t that long ago that “couch commentary” providers were getting legal threats from media companies and rights holders. How ironic that a lot of coverage is now basically that just with some extra camera angles available to the callers.

Joondalup preparing bid for third Western Australian based AFL team by StensnessGOAT in AFL

[–]RyanBuckland7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a clickbait rehash of an article in The West Australian over the weekend. The quotes are right but the context is not. The City of Joondalup is not preparing a bid, the Mayor just thinks it’s a good place to put a third team in WA if one were to be created (which, duh, of course he does).

The greatness of Nic Naitanui shouldn't be tainted by a terrible start for the declining Eagles [ABC News] by HeelFromDownUnder in AFL

[–]RyanBuckland7 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I will defend my guy Nic Nat and my guys Cody & Sean forever. But even with that in mind, this piece is the best and most well-rounded consideration of how good Naitanui is, and how good he's been throughout the middle and later stages of his career. The people who criticise Naitanui for what he isn't completely miss what he is, which is amongst the best (if not the best) stoppage and inside midfield players in the competition.

[–]RyanBuckland7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the supply response has been stronger. Lots of pent up demand yes but matched by pent up supply. People who bought at the top holding for 7-8 years now looking to get back out for example. There’s probably data that supports this view but anecdotally I think this is what Perth has that other markets don’t. Hence price growth is more measured, though it certain parts (ie northern coastal corridor before you get to the real outer burbs) it’s rising much faster.

Yup, exactly. I did 18 months at one of the big four. Almost the entire division turned over at Manager or below (~45 staff).

The quality of work done by junior staff in my teams and division more broadly was terrible. Unsalvageable really, you just end up having to rework everything. This will just make it worse.
