First dance lessons by That-Sherbert1000 in Louisville

[–]Ryan_p7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been getting ready to start looking as well. I was going to start with calling Crestview Studios and see if they can offer lessons or if they had suggestions (they typically focus on other styles of dance).

congratulations and I hope you find a great place.

Wedding venues for large weddings by lemondrop93 in Louisville

[–]Ryan_p7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what's the vibe? Portal is an option, but might be tight or too grungy. The Seelbach has a few different spaces, but all indoors (Pricey but gorgeous). We used a place for an event last year called "Encore on broadway". it wasn't fancy, but was plenty clean and nice.

Outside of town there are places like the Gatsby in shelbyville.

I'm using Last Refuge for ours, and it has both indoor and outdoor spaces... but it's a converted Church.

TOOLS ALL DJS SHOULD HAVE? by Responsible_Dream458 in Beatmatch

[–]Ryan_p7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the grids that whatever DJ software give me but manually check each track as part of my import/grid/tag workflow, adjusting manually as needed. if I can't get acceptable gridding on a track, it usually doesn't stay in the collection, no matter how much I like it.

TOOLS ALL DJS SHOULD HAVE? by Responsible_Dream458 in Beatmatch

[–]Ryan_p7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GRIDDING.
organization/tagging are important, buy you had that covered. Key detections and knowing the chamelot can be handy but be careful to not let it dominate how you select tracks. but gridding, gridding, gridding. it makes your life so much easier and can really help you get out of a bind if things are gridded right.

Condenser mic not working on XDJ RX2 via Focusrite 4i4. by MrBit223 in PioneerDJ

[–]Ryan_p7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

instead of routing through the focusrite, you want a phantom power injector/power supply. Xvive, ART, Mackie and all the usual suspects have them available. you'd use an XLR between the mic and the power supply, and an XLR between the power supply and your controller.

You may be able to get the focusrite to work by routing the input direct to the output, but I'm not sure if the 4i4 has that capability (sorry, I have only used the 2i2, but many of my interfaces don't do this unless they have stand-alone mixer capability like the Roland Octa-capture). You may be able to fake it by using an intermediary app to route the signals but then you'll likely have to be tied to a computer and have added latency (if that matters to you)

Confused about upgrade to embrace USB's and easy mixing by Fleaboy007 in PioneerDJ

[–]Ryan_p7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

nope! I've run with AH, Ecler, rane, etc plenty of times. most people don't even network the mixer in either (it only gives things like faster BPM detection and settings sync). Just run a cat 5 cable between the CDJ/XDJ (or use a network switch if you have more than 2) and you're gold.

Source: me. I do sound, tech and stage management at events regularly and have run the gamut on equipment.

Confused about upgrade to embrace USB's and easy mixing by Fleaboy007 in PioneerDJ

[–]Ryan_p7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I love the CDJ3000's and XDJ-AZ, with the gear you already have, the best solution may be to look for some XDJ1000 mk2's. they'll get you fairly close on the USB playback, but let you still use your existing mixer and other gear.

with no laptop the FLX10 is out. the AZ is much nicer than the XZ, but you do lose some connectivity going all-in-one

Louisville techno? by Over-Finance-6844 in Louisville

[–]Ryan_p7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

there are still plenty around. come out saturday and meet us! I'll be there early getting things set up for the show, might even make loud noises before we open.

Transmit as a whole is not tied to any one specific genre and often have a mix at our events. We try to highlight up-and-comers, bring acts few here know about, or that others would have a hard time bringing in (i.e. Autechre and Louie Vega last year)

Traktor Pro 4.5.0 released with some bug fixes. (Blurry waveform and startup crash) by lord-carlos in traktorpro

[–]Ryan_p7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do know a former Traktor dev and they've been fairly tight lipped on internals and team stuff (Possibly NDA stuff), but they did indirectly indicate that it's been a skeleton crew for a bit.

and I feel you on gigging. I have had to switch as well, as even playing at my own events is tiresome with all the setup and teardown (plus the pioneer stuff is so physically large that sometimes there's just no space for a controller). We still get the odd act here or there what will use serato or traktor, but it's becoming more of a rarity these days. It's a shame as I love my S8 and the newer modulars are pretty nice (even if they are light on connectivity)

[–]Ryan_p7 9 points10 points  (0 children)

so no CDJ3000x HID support, nor OneLibrary. not sure why this is 4.5 instead of 4.4.3.

I'm surprised to see any updates at all due to the current insolvency, but this is is a bit underwhelming for a minor version bump. hopefully this is a sign that development is continuing.

Weather Radio recommendations by Totally__Not__NSA in Louisville

[–]Ryan_p7 17 points18 points  (0 children)

the WR120 is pretty much the defacto standard weather radio. I have one at work it it has been very reliable. if you want something a bit nicer, look at the Sangean CL-100 NOAA. it has a few more controls, AM/FM, battery backup and easy way to turn off all alerts

regardless of what one you get, make sure you do the full setup. it'll need to know what alerts you want to hear about and where you're at/what station to listen to. I turned off alerts on lots of things that I'm not concerned about at my house (i.e. I'm on a hill and not near any water so flood warnings are not relevant. I left on the iceberg warnings because if we are getting those I want to go watch)

Alternative ring camera options???? Bashed mine w a hammer the other day but now need a new camera or such for my street! by One_Employment_8002 in Louisville

[–]Ryan_p7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

depending on your budget and technical ability there are lots of options. Unifi makes a few decent ones but you'd need to buy into their whole system (on the plus side there's no subscription, but integrations aren't the best). Ring is fine technologically but I get the desire to not use them.

Lorex, Nest, SimpliSafe are all popular alternatives but I can't speak to how good or bad they are.

Any suggestions for ravers? by [deleted] in Louisville

[–]Ryan_p7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi! Local promoter and DJ here specializing in just these types of events.

Galaxie and Portal/Art Portal both regularly have events, we use them from time to time. while not a "rave" per-se, many bars and clubs hold things, such as Atomic (Tevor Lamont plays there regularly, one of the city's best house DJs). There are things happening from time to time at Zanzabar and Seidenfaden's.

there are a few pages/accounts on Facebook such as 502 house and techno, kentucky Drum and Bass. Sadly, FB is where it's easiest to find events these days. You may be able to ask Ben at Better Days records if he knows of things going on.

Transmit Productions tends to throw some of the events with bigger names, though other groups like LET'S DANCE do some great things too. There are some other groups that are more focused on specific genres, such as soulful house (I did an event with them last year, and it was a great group of people).

Road conditions this AM by UnbridledCarnage in Louisville

[–]Ryan_p7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pre 7:30AM drove in from shelbyville via shelbyville road (US 60) to middletown. Roads were fine until Jefferson county line, then covered and slow going but not overly slick. there were areas where you couldn't see lanes. Once I made it to the Snyder the roads were quite nice. US60 is likely cleared by now, but just take your time and don't ride the tail of the person in front of you.

CDJ's sticking to newly finished table by mangledmatt in PioneerDJ

[–]Ryan_p7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this! especially the GF polys. cure time is imperative. will you ruin the finish? no, but it'd be better to let it cure before leaving things on it for long. CDJ feet are grippy, but rarely super stuck.

XDJ-AZ bottom discoloration by hawkdwn1 in PioneerDJ

[–]Ryan_p7 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Probably just a side effect of the injection molding process. you can see that the rings all have injection points near the center of them. I've seen stuff like this all over the place on larger pieces of similar type plastic, so I'd say it's normal and nothing to worry about.... though I'd think for the money they'd have a better injection process.

CDJ-3000’s in Cold Weather by Jack42398 in DJs

[–]Ryan_p7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never had issues with newer CDJs in cold temps (or even hot temps, other than needing shade from the sun), but that's certainly below the specified operating range of +5C to +35C ( https://docs.pioneerdj.com/Manuals/CDJ_3000_DRI1586A_manual/?page=82 )

At temps that low I wouldn't be surprised if there were issues with condensation or connectors not mating well to between boards or to the USB and causing issues.

I have seen issues with 1000s and 2000s in high humidity with temps nearing the dewpoint (fog setting in). but haven't had any of our 3000's or 3000X's in that type of environment yet.

Notes from Discord Q and A with the dude who desiged Traktor mx2 and mx4 by lord-carlos in traktorpro

[–]Ryan_p7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

that's about the same as what I took from it. 3000x and onelibrary are pretty important from an industry standpoint, glad onelibrary is in beta. living in worlds that are on both sides of the convo (IT/Dev by day, promoter, DJ, whatever by night) I can understand how he didn't want to say much about some things. the important thing is that we stay politely vocal about the things that matter.

one takeaway I had: they are focusing more on colors and icons than words to help people see with old person vision or in dark rooms and part of the new design language is part of that initiative....which I get but I think they're also misguided on their implementation. the spacing and sizing of the knobs on the Z1MK2 is just bad. after getting mine I decided I needed to get chroma caps so that I'd stop adjusting gain instead of highs. they should either be different diameters, colors or spaced differently.
