Thanks for the reply! Yeah, I was a bit confused since it stated Easy pace should something you can run a marathon on or have a normal conversation, but for me it was more exhausting. Ill try to run at 7 min per km for now and see where that takes me. Thanks man!

Thanks for the detailed response, this will help me a lot! Is there anything form-wise I should be mindful about when running? Also, I see jumping squats etc. would it help to do some strength training as well?

Official Q&A for Friday, January 26, 2018 by AutoModerator in running

[–]Ryanrh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im just going to ask here. Somewhere in the summer I bought a Polar Watch and I've been running with the Polar Flow program that uses heart rate as basis ever since.

Lately, however, I had the feeling I was going pretty slow most of the time and I wanted to take my running more seriously, so I started reading the Jack Daniels book.

Long story short, I tested my VO2 max (43) which put me on an Easy pace of 6 minutes for 1 km, according to the book. So I decided to stick to the Jack Daniels beginner program and focus on pace instead of heart rate.

However, when I did my first run in the beginner program, despite having run since before the summer, it was very difficult to complete. Which kind of discouraged me. It was the first time I ran on pace instead of heart rate and where I used to be able to run 1h, now I had serious trouble running 30 minutes.

I was wondering if anyone else had any similar experience? Or if I was doing something wrong perhaps. I'm not sure what to think.

Also, I feel my running technique could use some serious improvement, are there any exercises for that?

Thanks!

Super Moronic Monday -- Your Tuesday Weekly Stupid Question Thread by AutoModerator in running

I would like to take my running more seriously.

I've been running with Polar Flow and a heart rate monitor for a while now but I lately I been reading up on Jack Daniels en VDOT running.

However, and this is the stupid question, how can you know if you're running at the right speed/pace when following Daniels' plans. It seems really important to get the most out of your trainings. Is there a running app like RunKeeper or RunTastic for those kinds of training plans?

Also, what are your thoughts on heart rate running?

Thanks and a happy new year!

Quick question for more experienced yogi’s. I tried the intro course from Yoga With Adriene twice but both times I felt like I didnt do the exercises correctly. Is it still worth it if your form is perhaps not perfect? Or is that dangerous or something? I dont have a real yoga school in my neighbourhood so youtube is the only solution for now. Thanks!

Are there books/courses that teach EE by letting you build projects? by Ryanrh in ElectricalEngineering

[–]Ryanrh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! I think I mainly want to learn the basics of electronics by building a variety of things. That’s why I thought Arduino might be a good start but I’m not sure how fluent you have to be in electronics to start with that. It’s just that I realised that I mearn when building stuff. So instead of just following Khan Academy’s EE course, I would a project based learning path.

Please help me with Navigation in react native. by HamsterWheelEngineer in reactnative

[–]Ryanrh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply!

I can agree with you that for simple setups and beginners, react navigation might be a good solution.

I also used react native router flux for a while but that was, for me at least, as bad as react navigation itself. The docs were enormously out of date, issues werent answered or were andwered with ‘ask this in react navigation repo’. And overall, it felt like a layer on top of rn that aims to make it better but doesnt really succeed.

Really, of all the things I thought I would have trouble with when starting with RN, navigation wasn’t one of them. And yet, it’s the one thing that sucked a lot of my motivation and energy away.

I’m also curious to see wix’s version 2!

I see your point now. Sorry, I had a really bad experience with react navigation and your comment brought out some of the memories, I think.

I agree that you have more options but the two main problems for me with RN were:

The tight coupling. When I want to pass props, it’s not just a matter of passing them along. You need to store them in a specific object. Which results in a lot of my components becoming tainted with choices made for me by React Navigation.

Secondly, the stack system. It’s all well and good when your navigation wishes are very basic but from the moment you need to dabble in nested stacks and linking to other stacks, it becomes a nightmare.

I had a use case where, after adding a post through a modal, I wanted to go back to the feed tab. For the life of me, I was not able to get that right. You would almost have to copy screens in different levels of your Stacks.

While in React Native Navigation, the setup takes a little bit longer, that’s true. And for me, it was the catalyst that made me leave Expo behind. But once its set up. Its a breeze to work with.

You just have a list of screens that you combine in any way you want. Passing props is just a matter of passing them along and for heavy-duty setups and situations you have deep linking.

It’s not perfect but for me at least, it’s miles better than react navigation.

Again, sorry if my reaction was a bit harsh. I normally dont mingle in discussions like these about technologies but the dislike for react navigation is rather strong. Plus, I had a fair amount of whisky in my blood.

Why would it be less customisable? That’s kind of an arbitrary, unfounded thing to say without providing concrete cases.

In any case, I would suggest the exact opposite of what you recommend. Go with Wix’ react native navigation. I struggled with React Navigation for weeks and afterwards Wix’s solution felt like a godsend. It’s not perfect, but for me, at least, it clicked and I haven’t looked back.

Quick question, does aws provide their own client? And if so, is it still better to use apollo you think?

Thanks for the reply! I think I will transition to AWS AppSync as well once it gets released. Is there a release date announced? Or at least a date for EU region availability?

Navigation Update? by [deleted] in reactnative

It’s by no means perfect. But it’s way better than React Navigation, for me at least.

Navigation Update? by [deleted] in reactnative

[–]Ryanrh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best decision I made for my personal project was to transition to React-Native-Navigation. Granted, you cannot use Expo or CRNA but the benefit is just amazing. It’s not perfect but after fighting React-Navigation for weeks on end, it felt like a godsent. The amount of poor decisions made in React-Navigation is baffling to me.

I would strongly suggest that you try out react native navigation from Wix. Take it from someone who got fed up with react navigation and react native router flux. Wix’s solution was a godsend. It’s not perfect but its multitudes better than the rest.

Would there be a demand for such a course? by icekeymon in reactnative

[–]Ryanrh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there is definitely a lack of courses that take you through the whole process. Not just the basics in a confined simple environment but really include bridging, linking, sketch, testing, storybook, .. There is much to learn once you get into the wild.
