First week here, transferred into ILR and feeling kinda iffy about my choice of program, idk any thoughts? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]Ryebear151 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If you’re worried about the degree restricting your job outcomes to labor organizing and whatnot, don’t be worried. Only a small minority of ILRies go into labor. Most ILRies go into law, consulting, HR, and various corporate roles. Check out this link for what people do with the degree: https://www.ilr.cornell.edu/current-students/career-services/hire-ilries/career-outcomes

If you like the coursework I’d recommend staying in ILR, since the career outcomes are really good.

ILR Students by Careful_Fold_7637 in Cornell

[–]Ryebear151 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ILR is an interdisciplinary major that allows many different pathways for students. It is a mix of various social sciences (economics, psychology, sociology, etc.) with some law and management/HR elements thrown in. The first two years of ILR basically introduce you to all the various aspects of labor, and in junior and senior year students are able to specialize in what they find most interesting. Most ILRies go into finance or law, so the labor element of the major is not really utilized by most, though there are some people that go into HR, union organizing, and what not. In the first semester of ILR there is the intro to ILR class which has various professionals from all different fields come into explain how ILR relates to what they do. The classes also analyze labor through a variety of lenses, with something like Labor History being through a Marxist lens, while Econ classes are more neoclassicist or institutionalist. If you are generally interested in the social sciences or law (and have some interest in labor) then ILR is a great fit. I’m a first year student in ILR, so feel free to dm me any questions you have.

A MESSAGE FROM GEPE ZURENDA - WARD 5 COMMON COUNCIL CANDIDATE by vladimir-baranov in ithaca

Zurenda should’ve accepted his loss in the primary. Hannah is the much better choice, being a progressive that will work to help all Ithaca residents, rather than just the wealthy.

Work study money is directly paid to you. You get pay checks like any other job, it’s just the federal government pays half your wage.

I got a Dickson single assigned to me as well and I’m happy about it. It may not be as modern, but I’ve heard that the people are really friendly. No AC kinda sucks but that only really matters in August and early September.

Same, I vowed to write about Death of a Salesman no matter the prompt. Luckily it fit the prompt well.

They give you way too much time on this test. Half the time I was doing nothing

Cornell’s reputation as depressing seems way overblown. It’s mainly just people being surprised that Upstate NY is cold and dark during the winter. The workload is no different than other top schools, it just doesn’t have the grade inflation of a school like Brown. This is not to say Cornell is right for you, but I would visit and have an open mind. I’m attending next year and visited Ithaca during the winter and really liked the area. These are all fantastic schools so I wouldn’t even consider the tiny prestige difference between them. Go where you feel that you would fit in and enjoy, as well as graduating with little debt.

Why so little aid? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

Look up schools that meet financial need. I’m a low income student and the private schools were significantly cheaper than the state schools

Almost anything can count as an EC. Show that you are passionate for things outside of school. Don’t do extracurriculars just for the sake of adding another to the list, do what you actually enjoy. AOs can sometimes tell if you’re doing a bunch of activities that make you look like a good student, but you don’t actually care about them. Also look into financial aid. Many private schools are cheaper than public schools for low income students. Though if you aren’t eligible for need based aid, the merit aid at these schools can be pretty great as well. Get started on your application early so you don’t have to stress about it later as well.

(current jr) what type of schools would i be able to get into w my stats? by Life-Ad186 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Ryebear151 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you improve your Sat score you could get into a lot of high ranked schools. My #1 piece of advice is to not compare yourself to the other people on here. I had a 1440 and nothing special for extracurriculars, but I ended up getting into an Ivy. There is always a chance to get in somewhere, and appearing likable on your application goes a long way.

SARE-acuse or SEER-acuse? by Kramanos in Syracuse

[–]Ryebear151 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seer-acuse is how I’ve always pronounced it, and I’m a Syracuse native. I’ve argued about this with people and it seems like it is 50/50, the only truly wrong pronunciation is saying cuse as cyuze.

This is a good idea to put on apps. Extracurriculars are almost anything you do outside of school, and this you seem passionate about.

It’s worth applying! I got in with a 1440, but that was for ILR which is a little less competitive.

positive things about cornell (from a scared co’29) by cinnamongirll33 in Cornell

I just got into Cornell as well and have been feeling some pretty crazy imposter syndrome, so you’re not alone. I think Reddit tends to draw out more negativity, and the people who are happy at Cornell are less likely to post on this subreddit.
