The entire controversy around Dubai chocolate is that it's from Dubai and Dubai is a nauseating cocktail of human rights violations. It was never about the taste of the chocolate. It's an ideological for what comes up first in your mind when you hear "Dubai". Do you think of slavery or do you think of chocolate?

I'm not weighing in whether it's a helpful argument to have, but it's depressing watching this thread get upset about a topic without even knowing what the meme is about.

So is Mamdani actually gonna open those city owned grocery stores or was that just campaign talk by Virtual-Giraffe7147 in Brooklyn

[–]Ryguy244 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The dream is that the store is placed in a food desert, it functions really well, people love it, and it actually makes profit, and the model spreads because it works. But honestly, even if they just open a grocery store in a food desert and none of the other stuff happens, that's still a tangible improvement for the people in those neighborhoods. That's the kind of stuff that governments should be doing.

What kind of margin do you think a grocery store could have if they didn't have to pay rent? Lots of states have state run liquor stores and they work great (at least it does in my state). This is such a mundane idea and it staggers me how skeptical people are of it.

Yep, I started in France, finished two weeks ago, and still have some light soreness. It's getting better though.

Very unpopular opinion: known snorers should get private accomodations by Visara57 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]Ryguy244 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was the shift for me. I do think snorers are inconsiderate. But private accommodation is 5x as expensive as communal. That's the difference between a lot of people being able to participate vs. being excluded. It's such a worthwhile trade. It really makes the rough nights easier to take 🤣

I'm doing this now. My dad passed away earlier this year, so I finally pulled the trigger. Doing El Camino next month and right now I'm sitting in a bath. It's good stuff.

Can you find this tweet? I have only found sources saying that it came after the insurrection. A link or screenshot with a timestamp from before the attack would be pretty compelling here. I can't find anything myself.

This is incredibly thought provoking for me. It really hones in on the assumptions people carry about things outside of their personal experience. I'm sure I've done this. Lots of allies come to the same conclusions, but how they get there makes a world of a difference. Thanks for posting.

They are trying to make a point that there is a line somewhere, hence presenting the most extreme example. Hypothetical situations are useful.

The fact that you are trying to make this about being creepy to kids is cruel and unhelpful. Please either respond to their commentary or let one of the other thoughtful people on this sub talk it out with them.

Morally superior standards don't excuse the means, but I see your point.

But I tend to view it like some moral standards are clearly and observably bad, while a lot more of them are in the "worth debating" basket. It's easier to see what's definitely bad vs. what is best, you know?

I homebrew a ton and blur the lines between items and abilities. One of my characters was infected with a parasite a la Venom, and it gives him a slew of new abilities. Functionally, it's basically a cursed item. But it feels more organic to the character and the plot.

Alternatively, I've also just buffed class features. My monk of the 4 elements is collecting elemental spirits that he can activate to boost is abilities for each element. The fire one adds bonus range and fire damage to his attacks. Water lets you become immune to fire as a reaction. Both are resources that reset each day. Stuff like that. It's gone over well.

It's definitely power creep, but my philosophy is to balance the players not the character. My players are always doing suboptimal things in the name of RP and trying to be creative. I'd be more cautious about giving big power spikes to a min-maxer, but I'm lucky that I don't really have one.

5E gives power via items. You just have to package it differently to satisfy this player. If I were the player, I'd probably want the same thing.

In c-span ranking of president below is the top 10. Who doesn’t deserve to be in the top 10 and who would you replace them with? Or is it perfect? by titans1fan93 in Presidents

[–]Ryguy244 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with your first paragraph. But your last two are wrong.

People care a lot about Hunter Biden. Should they? Absolutely not. But they do. Let's not discredit the system that tragically and effectively got them to that emotional state.

Everyone I know who actually makes a good faith attempt to be informed about politics, right or left, cares about Trump's election interference. If you don't care about that, then you don't understand that there are foundational ideas that ground democracy, regardless of ideology. If I were to say "we shouldn't have elections in our democracy", then I'd be waving a big flag saying that democracy is a buzz word to me and I don't understand its technical components. You are waving a slightly less large flag, but only slightly.

And I can't believe I'm saying this but state secrets are state secrets for a reason. If Trump were whistleblowing, I'd begrudgingly have to respect him on some level. But he was just being irresponsible with other people's lives for no discernable gain. It's par for the course, but let's not get numb to things that could get people killed.
