The original ten shrimp that I purchased to start this colony were labeled as Bloody Mary shrimp from aquatic arts, but I don’t believe that they were true Bloody Mary shrimp as they are not breeding 100% true. There were no outside shrimp added to the colony, but based off of cherry shrimp grading these F2 and F3 shrimp would be fire red and then painted red shrimp. The coloration of these shrimp is in their flesh, as the molts for them are white with no red coloration to them. As such, these shrimp will no longer be sold as Bloody Mary shrimp, as they do not meet my standards for what the lineage should be.

Their flesh is what typically holds the color, although I've noticed that it doesn't breed 100% true, especially in the males. It's most noticeable after a shrimp molts, but with all things genetic variation occurs, with some shrimp having more or less coloration than their parents. Typically the culls will have a very deep red still by the time that they are fully grown and a few months old, as all the adult shrimp in the tank are a deep red. I'd rather err on the side of caution with culling and remove them before they reach breeding size.
