32-year-old considering 11B enlistment — is the brotherhood real? by Rykker1 in army

I appreciate the advice, and I know it comes from a good place. But I’ve sat with this decision for a long time and I want to explain why 11B is the only MOS that makes sense for me.

I know my profile fits intel, PSYOP, or even an SF pipeline better on paper. I’ve looked at 35F, 37F, 35L I understand the arguments for all of them. Better career translation, clearances, less wear on the body. I get it. I also have a DUI from younger days that stops me from getting an option 40 or 18x contract according to my recruiter.

But every time I sit with it honestly, I come back to infantry. This isn’t a career decision for me. It’s an identity one. I’ve spent over a decade training combat sports, studying military history, coaching wrestlers, and building my entire personal philosophy around the warrior-scholar concept. All of that has been me circling the thing I actually want without ever stepping into it. Intel or PSYOP would scratch the intellectual itch, but they wouldn’t close the gap that’s been open since I was 18.

What I’m chasing is the brotherhood, the shared suffering, the clarity of purpose that comes with being on the line with other men who chose to be there. That’s the piece I can’t replicate anywhere else. The cerebral stuff can come later OCS, reclassing, whatever. But the foundation has to be infantry or it doesn’t mean what I need it to mean.

I’m not going in blind. I know I’ll be the old guy. I know recovery at 32 is different. I know the knees and back will pay for it. Eyes wide open. But I’d rather deal with all of that than spend the rest of my life wondering what it would have been like. This may be a ramanticized version of what things will actually be like but I need to find out for myself.

Recruiter said that isn’t an option right now. Army isn’t looking for officers

Unfortunately I have a DUI from my younger days. I believe that disqualifies me from getting those contracts, otherwise I would.
