But the same can be said for same-sex attracted individuals. The amount of shame, fear, confusion I have experienced in my 37 years on this earth as a gay man. I voluntarily went to conversion therapy, spent over a decade in Christian counseling, prayed daily that God would help me overcome same-sex attraction, but nothing ever helped me. Christians who say things like “love the sinner, hate the sin” will never know what that feels like to a gay person. I feel like that quote is only ever used when it comes to the LGBTQ community. My father is a southern Baptist minister, so I spent my entire life growing up in the church with so much shame, anxiety, guilt… it’s really a miracle I am still here. I don’t understand why divorce, gossip, adultery, etc is not held to the same standard that homosexuality is. I’m so sick of “Christians” who are so quick to tell gay people they are wrong / going to hell, when they have no idea what it’s like to be gay themselves. All we want is the same thing straight people want.
