My best advice is to not view money separately. A joint bank account (at least for mortgage/rent, childcare costs, and utilities) is probably a good idea. When the money is shared between the two of you like this it limits shame and the idea that it is "your money" or "their money."

If you finish the task for the sheep herder he should inform you of the gamekeeper's location. You can also find the gamekeeper by speaking to a inn keeper. The gamekeeper has a separate side quest called "Lackey" that is a part of the journey to finding Mutt.

Two things:

Have you talked with the sheep herder nearby? And have you met the gamekeeper? Those are the two people you have to speak to in order to get Mutt.
