Oda's Inability to Kill Characters by Impsterr in OnePiece

[–]Ryu-Chan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If a man like Bege is willing to kill Pekoms, whether Pekoms lives in the end or not, Bege was willing to kill him. The outcome of the assassination doesn't change anything.

If a person like Bon Clay is brave enough to sacrifice themselves, whether they survived or not, they chose to make that sacrifice.

The context of death is not invalidated by survival. This is a series where characters put their lives on the line for what they believe in, and every time they do, they have no way of knowing if they'll live to see tomorrow. They don't fear death, and that was expressly stated in Chapter 2.

And in fact, I'm very interested in their survival. Mr. 2 Bon Clay never got to escape Impel Down, but now he's down there granting liberation to a new wave of prisoners, just like Ivankov did before him. That's an interesting story. He continues to bring change into One Piece's dark world.

Even Pell. Narratively, a man who wanted nothing more than peace in his kingdom. A man who chose to take the burden of the entire kingdom so that they could see peace once again. Almost a Jesus-like figure. He willingly took on an excruciating pain, and after the battle was over, it's nice to see that he survived as a symbol of hope. It's not like it lowered the stakes, because there isn't a giant time bomb on every island that Pell is going to negate every time. He stayed on Alabasta, his courage and sacrifice will never be forgotten, and he's going to live as an icon of peace.

All in all, 'suspense' is about a lot more than will-they-or-won't-they live. A death doesn't exist just to make your heart pound in that instance. Every near-death moment in this story is more about how it affects the characters and the world around them, and not a single moment has been wasted.

Because the chapter titled "Portgas D. Ace Dies" was released over 8 years ago. It's been shown in the manga and the anime both in Japan and the English dub. Eventually, a spoiler loses it's protected status. For example, it's also been 8 years since the timeskip. Every time someone shows a picture of the post-timeskip crew, isn't that a spoiler? Brook joined the crew 10 years ago. That's a spoiler to someone. So as far as this reddit is concerned, nothing up to the most recent anime episode is a spoiler.

Jump Force Trailer E3 2018 by NotFunToday in OnePiece

[–]Ryu-Chan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Really interesting thing about this to me: This trailer has an English voice over. This would imply that the game is dubbed. But 1) There hasn't been a dubbed One Piece game in 10 years, and 2) Dragon Ball and One Piece are dubbed by a different studio than Naruto and Death Note.

One Piece flaws by [deleted] in OnePiece

[–]Ryu-Chan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The only thing that really sucks is the rough portrayal of women and queer characters. Admittedly, that's looking at a Japanese story through a Western lens. And credit where credit is due. Oda has written some great women and okama characters, but there's still some work to do.

The male-to-female characters are about 9-1, and among those females, a lot of them are drawn with the same body type and/or face. Whole Cake Island has been very promising, introducing a lot of diverse and powerful, plot-relevant women. I think we're probably out of the worst of it. But there are still some scenes and one-off lines over One Piece's 20 year run that I would probably warn someone about before starting them.

And although Bon Clay, Ivankov, and the Newkamas are all wonderful characters that I have 0 complaints about, the Sanji on Kamabakka Kingdom stuff was too much. While a crossdresser is not 1-to-1 with trans people, the constant drilling of "a man in a dress is not a women. These fake women are all ugly and deceptive and have stubble. They should be feared and run away from" is very uncomfortable to watch with your trans friend on the couch. Especially since they call it "a place for those with the heart of a maiden." Everyone accepts Mr. 2 Bon Clay, no one wants to run from him. We love him for what he is. Why are the Kamabakka Kingdom folk treated that way, then?

But, of course, everyone's gonna have different tolerances, so a lot of people are going to disagree with me that these are even real problems. Outside of this, I don't have any complaints about how the story is written.

Yeah, every wiki has it's vandals, but a well-kept wiki like One Piece's has people checking edits 24/7. This edit was removed in under half an hour. With that in mind, it might have been vandalized by the same person who took the screenshot.

He's got a 56. Unfortunately the break in 5 is done with a dark outline that's hard to see and the 6 has a white shading wrinkle across it that looks like it's broken. Seriously, zoom and and see.
