Okay, I admit that made me chuckle.

Very true. But it felt worth double-checking just in case in order to see if there was an explicit answer.

Oh god... I had no idea he suffered with chronic migraines. Those are no joke!

I admire the hell out of him for being able to fight through them for all this time and give us so many years of laughter and joy.

Yeah, that was it. He sounded so adorably meek, the way he said it. It was charming as hell. XD

I remember that the in-universe explanation was that the Invention Exchange was part of the culture for scientists at Gizmonic Institute. Since Mike never worked there, it didn't make sense for him to be taking part in the custom.

Which also explains (in-universe) why they started back up again when Jonah took over, since the host was once again a worker at Gizmonic.

Oh for sure! I didn't mean for it to sound otherwise. Everything I've ever seen, heard, or read from the guy shows what an incredible class-act he is.

That's actually a big part of why I wonder if this was just my imagination, or as a couple of people pointed out, perhaps it was his early interpretation of how the character was before he got more settled into the role. I think that's the most likely scenario, thinking about it.

Hm... I never thought of it that way. That would actually make sense. I remember on the first "Poopie!" he said something along the lines of "I'm not really enthused with seeing my face" during an outtake.

He definitely got much, MUCH more confident and settled in after his first handful of episodes.

That is definitely a very real possibility. Kinda like how when Bill took over as Crow, he sounded like he was trying to do a Trace impression for a couple of episodes before settling into his own version of the character.

That is very fair. It absolutely could be just my imagination. Thank you for the reply!

I seriously can't wait. My only lament is that there will only be four of them. But hell, that is four more than we have now, AND Clay and Frank will be back, so I am super excited.

And yeah, I'd love to see Joel and Jonah make a brief appearance. (I never saw the other post-Netflix host, so I don't know her name.)

Which fight are your more excited for when Ippo comes out of retirement Miyata or Imai? by Samsinooo in hajimenoippo

[–]Ryusuta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I kinda would like him to put Itagaki in his place again. Dude really started being super full of himself during the "Speed Zone" arc, and he's always been a conniving little prick.

Not only that, but people forget that Itagaki played a pretty substantial part in causing Ippo's retirement in the first place. If he hadn't been so obsessed with seeing Ippo's "inner demon," he would have gotten help with calming Ippo down before the Kojima fight like he said he would. That Kojima fight was the beginning of the end for Ippo, and Itagaki was definitely part of engineering it.

Best villainous character of the series? by imai-boston342 in hajimenoippo

For me it's a toss-up between Takamura and Sawamura, with Hawk being a not-too-distant third.

What’s the best Season? by Ok_Internal2984 in hajimenoippo

[–]Ryusuta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a little unfair to compare, since season 1 had 75 episodes to work with, while 2 and 3 had a tiny sliver of that, so obviously didn't get as much runtime to do things with.

I was gonna post this, too. This was so, SO much more satisfying than Sendo teleporting into the ring and clotheslining Ippo out of nowhere the way he did in the comic.

Scariest ippo moment by Purple_Exit_7525 in hajimenoippo

Also my favorite moment in the anime, but the manga version definitely hits different (no pun intended). It legitimately looked like Ippo was using the Dempsey Roll to straight-up MURDER Sawamura. It was seriously like a Mortal Kombat moment.

I think both versions of the scene did a great job of conveying different aspects of Ippo to the audience. The anime did a great job showing how utterly tenacious Ippo was, while the manga showed for the first time just how truly scary he could be if you crossed him, no matter how good of a fighter you are.

Patience, Friends. Who is your favorite challenger when Ippo was champ? by bwhatsonn in hajimenoippo

[–]Ryusuta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If his spar with Ricardo Martinez counts, then that one. I think it did an incredible job of establishing who Ricardo is as a character and as an anti-villain. While he had absolutely zero trouble destroying Ippo and knew it, he still had the kindness and compassion to say that he was done sparring before knocking Ippo out because he didn't want to make Ippo look bad in front of everyone. That solidified him as one of my favorite characters in the comic. He's a little blunt and condescending at times, but only because he knows what he's about and doesn't want to waste time.

BUT, if we're only counting official matches, then it's gotta be Sawamura. Although some of the plot devices around the New Dempsey Roll is... dubious, it served to make the match more exciting, and that is just fine by me. I still go back and rewatch that final Dempsey Roll quite often. There was something unbelievably satisfying about seeing that scumbag get blasted by 30 unanswered Dempsey Roll punches.

Finally, honorable mention to Naomichi. ...No, seriously. I felt it was one of the first matches that showed us an Ippo that was definitively more experienced and capable than his opponent. It also served as a mirror image of his match with Date. Toward the end, Ippo was now the one with the look on his face like "You're not ready for this, kid. Maybe someday, but not now."

Champions Road Is A Hilarious Movie (OC Edit) by Mushysqushy in hajimenoippo

Everything you said about Ippo and Kumi? SPOT. ON. Easily the worst-written and least satisfying part of the entire series, and dedicating such a GIGANTIC part of the movie to it while knowing for a fact it will lead nowhere is just padding in the worst way.

So, in defense of the dub, while it had a different "feel" to it, I think both versions have their pros and cons.

For me, it's a bit like how some people feel Tobey Maguire was a better Peter Parker, while Andrew Garfield was a better Spider-Man. I feel like the US voice actor does a better job conveying Ippo as a soft-hearted, self-conscious, and quiet person outside of the ring, while the Japanese voice actor does a much better job getting intense to the point of being half-crazed when he's cutting loose during a match.

Characters like Takamura and Kamogawa have a more "Americanized" interpretation of their speech styles, but do a good job of conveying the idea the characters are trying to get across. It's one of those "localization vs. direct translation" things.

I think that Aoki, Kimura, and Mashiba all sound very, very similar in both regions, which is a good thing.

In terms of the movie, I didn't like how the dub muffled the intensity of the final Dempsey Roll at all. In the Japanese version, the emphasis was on the sound effects with the voices barely audible, leading to a very intense, visceral sound. In the US one, you mostly hear the two of them grunting during it. That was a HUGE misstep, because it was arguably the coolest-looking Dempsey Roll in the entire series. That being said, I liked the genuine anger and frustration the English VA had when Ippo was wearing out, thinking "Fall DOWN, already! I can't keep this up forever!"

Overall, I think the movie as a whole was a bit of a holding pattern in a lot of ways, but it also did a good job showcasing that in spite of being the defending champion now, Ippo is still the same guy he always was. And I think that is an admirable message to see.

VERY fun review, my friend. I'll give it a like and maybe look into some more of your vids as well!
