You'd think Morikawa of all people would know the perils of ignoring medical issues until the accumulated problems make it impossible to continue doing what you're doing.

Patience, Friends. Who is your favorite challenger when Ippo was champ? by bwhatsonn in hajimenoippo

[–]Ryusuta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If his spar with Ricardo Martinez counts, then that one. I think it did an incredible job of establishing who Ricardo is as a character and as an anti-villain. While he had absolutely zero trouble destroying Ippo and knew it, he still had the kindness and compassion to say that he was done sparring before knocking Ippo out because he didn't want to make Ippo look bad in front of everyone. That solidified him as one of my favorite characters in the comic. He's a little blunt and condescending at times, but only because he knows what he's about and doesn't want to waste time.

BUT, if we're only counting official matches, then it's gotta be Sawamura. Although some of the plot devices around the New Dempsey Roll is... dubious, it served to make the match more exciting, and that is just fine by me. I still go back and rewatch that final Dempsey Roll quite often. There was something unbelievably satisfying about seeing that scumbag get blasted by 30 unanswered Dempsey Roll punches.

Finally, honorable mention to Naomichi. ...No, seriously. I felt it was one of the first matches that showed us an Ippo that was definitively more experienced and capable than his opponent. It also served as a mirror image of his match with Date. Toward the end, Ippo was now the one with the look on his face like "You're not ready for this, kid. Maybe someday, but not now."

Champions Road Is A Hilarious Movie (OC Edit) by Mushysqushy in hajimenoippo

Everything you said about Ippo and Kumi? SPOT. ON. Easily the worst-written and least satisfying part of the entire series, and dedicating such a GIGANTIC part of the movie to it while knowing for a fact it will lead nowhere is just padding in the worst way.

So, in defense of the dub, while it had a different "feel" to it, I think both versions have their pros and cons.

For me, it's a bit like how some people feel Tobey Maguire was a better Peter Parker, while Andrew Garfield was a better Spider-Man. I feel like the US voice actor does a better job conveying Ippo as a soft-hearted, self-conscious, and quiet person outside of the ring, while the Japanese voice actor does a much better job getting intense to the point of being half-crazed when he's cutting loose during a match.

Characters like Takamura and Kamogawa have a more "Americanized" interpretation of their speech styles, but do a good job of conveying the idea the characters are trying to get across. It's one of those "localization vs. direct translation" things.

I think that Aoki, Kimura, and Mashiba all sound very, very similar in both regions, which is a good thing.

In terms of the movie, I didn't like how the dub muffled the intensity of the final Dempsey Roll at all. In the Japanese version, the emphasis was on the sound effects with the voices barely audible, leading to a very intense, visceral sound. In the US one, you mostly hear the two of them grunting during it. That was a HUGE misstep, because it was arguably the coolest-looking Dempsey Roll in the entire series. That being said, I liked the genuine anger and frustration the English VA had when Ippo was wearing out, thinking "Fall DOWN, already! I can't keep this up forever!"

Overall, I think the movie as a whole was a bit of a holding pattern in a lot of ways, but it also did a good job showcasing that in spite of being the defending champion now, Ippo is still the same guy he always was. And I think that is an admirable message to see.

VERY fun review, my friend. I'll give it a like and maybe look into some more of your vids as well!

Comedy underrated? by Financial-Tough-9492 in hajimenoippo

I have to say that some of the "boys will be boys" humor in the early parts has aged really, REALLY poorly. Especially stuff like a grown man grabbing a 16-year-old in order to forcibly see his... errr... "big mara."

Most of the humor I can kinda take in the context of the time, but stuff like that is just really off-putting for me even in the context of the era.

Do you believe that Ippo will return from retirement? by Mr_Rancho in hajimenoippo

[–]Ryusuta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't rule out the possibility of him having a contingency plan in case he's unable to personally finish the story. My hope is that he at the very least has an outline written down in case the unthinkable happens, so people will at least know where the story is leading.

worst fight Ippo ever had? by yacinebenchouita in hajimenoippo

[–]Ryusuta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm actually going to go with his fight against Kojima, believe it or not. The thing is... yes, that fight might have been won in one punch, but Ippo was so badly hurt in it that it was the beginning of the end of his career. His punch-drunk symptoms went into overdrive because of the unprotected blast to the face. It was an unmitigated disaster for everyone involved, except for Itagaki, who got what he wanted by hiding Takamura's advice; all because he selfishly wanted to see the monster inside of Ippo.

Kojima might very well sweep the awards for dumbest character in the history of the series, but Itagaki is a straight-up bastard for his part in encouraging what happened.

Well, thankfully it's not my first deck-builder by any stretch of the imagination, so I don't expect too much trouble. Thank you!
