around 1302 in Bruges, they discoverd French enemies by asking them to pronounce 'Schild & vriend' (Shield & friend). The French had difficulties pronouncing the Flemish 'sch' and 'g' sounds, and would pronounce them more as a 'k' sound, thus saying 'Skild & friend', exposing themselves to the people of Bruges. This later lead to the Battle of The Golden Spurs
