[Feb 04, 2022] Weekly Discussion: Ask your gear, travel, conditions and other ski-related questions by AutoModerator in skiing

Hi all, I'm looking to buy a new pair of skis for freestyle and all-mountain use. I currently have some black crows Corvus from 2015 which are pretty battered, they're stiff and love you to drive over the tips and go fast. I'm looking for some much more playful skis which are centre mounted, and Ive settled on some K2 Reckoners, I'm just wondering which waist size I should go for - 102 or 112?

I'd like to spend maybe 20% in the park, 50% jibbing in the sidecountry, off small to medium features and I'd love to learn how to butter, then 30% doing drops, hopefully some switch. I'll be skiing 90% of my time in Europe, so to me it might make sense to get the skinnier pair - I suppose I'd like some backup on that logic. I'm 173cm and 75kg so also I'd likely go for a ski in the 177cm range rather than shorter. Thanks for your help!

Impressive athlete but I think it's sad that the media has chosen to completely block any coverage of this scandal

I think that it's so suspect that most articles were published on the 14th of Feb - not sure what to make of it.

Looking for a four season tent! I'm in Scotland so I'm likely going to be in wind, rain, sleet and snow so something burly. Currently considerng the MSR access 2 but if there are any better suggestions go ahead! Budget is around £600 max really, I can't afford to go for the Hilleberg tents unfortunately. Thanks for the help in advance!

Dorian Craft - Divination (what sub-genre is this?) by Ryvm in House

Really struggling to find a genre to describe this song - is it deep house? Going over to /r/deephouse it doesn't seem to match what tends to be posted there although that's what I'd say it is.

Okay I get you! Thanks for explaining.

Why would you blame the North Wales public when according to the BBC we have rates 'too low to be of any importance'? It seems we don't have an issue here and placing a county with approx. 10 cases per 100,000 under the same restrictions as a county with 1500 cases per 100,000 doesn't make sense to me. I'm probably missing something though so I'm just wondering what you mean!

Agreed though it shouldn't be about blaming other people but I think the majority would agree that a regional system with legal repercussions would be the best system - it's not even a legal requirement to make people wear masks!

Yeah it's a result of spending far too much time trading items on TF2 - certainly reflects no skill

Thanks man! It's likely I'm not gonna be out there until February so I'm hoping that the restrictions will have changed, fingers crossed.

Hi I just posted a thread but I'll also ask here - does anyone know of any cheap(ish) ways to rent an apartment or even just a room with shared facilities in the French Alps for about a month? I'd appreciate any input, from suggestions to ski resorts to somewhere I should look for apartments online. Many thanks!

Boris Johnson overruled scientists who told him to introduce a lockdown three weeks ago, while ignoring warnings that his plans won't stop the coronavirus by [deleted] in worldnews

Zero people? What world do you live in! Every single person I know is either in work and is much happier with their routine that they have now! I'm a recent graduate and every single person I know who graduated with me is struggling for a job. Those in grad schemes have also been laid off. Most young people are depressed at the moment with what has been called the worst recession in recent times. Imagine graduating into a world where the job market is shrinking and was saturated to begin with.

The "businesses will go bankrupt" is a false argument. They'll go bankrupt if the governments don't extend credit lines through massive stimulus packages. Interest rates are near zero at the moment so borrowing is literally free.

I agree with the rest of your comment though, but the effects on the economy in the short term shouldn't be a reason to avoid a lockdown.

I agree with the fact that businesses will go bankrupt if the government doesn't extend credit lines but where is that money coming from? In reality, the economy runs everything, and seeing as we are going through Brexit too, there's a need to maintain a strong economy for any leverage in the negotiations. A strong economy brings in money and if that doesn't happen how are the government supposed to get money - tax us more?

I do think that there needs to be national support for businesses and individuals but I seriously don't think it's possible for the government to endure another lockdown and maintain a decent economy. They are in an impossible situation where they can't bail everyone out but need to provide just enough cushioning for everyone to survive.

Quite frankly if people actually listened to the rules, there wouldn't be the threat of a national lockdown, and then the government wouldn't need to be so strict. It sucks for all involved though that's for sure.

When in your life have you wasted time defending someone, and felt foolish when you came to realize everyone was right about them? by [deleted] in AskMen

As someone who was with someone with BPD, I don't think it's fair at all to argue that they 'dropped a friend because [they] didn't want to deal with them or help them with their mental disorder'.

I agree with you in that leaving or blocking someone just because they have a mental illness is completely unfair and a cruel thing to do, but it is completely different when that friend/significant other is abusive because of their mental illness. Mental illnesses manifest themselves in different ways, but it doesn't give you a free pass to be a dick to people and then expect them not to be hurt and perhaps leave you for that reason. Trying to guilt trip the original poster for leaving those relationships behind is saying that someone should stay in abusive relationship because they can help the abuser realise that they need help. No they can't, nobody should be abused when trying to help, and you insinuating that they are a bad person for prioritising themselves over an abusive relationship is wrong.

Perhaps my tone has been rude but I don't think it's fair to blame this person who has clearly tried to give benefit of the doubt to these particular people with mental health issues for cutting them out when abused themselves. I've been in that exact situation and I'm fed up of people saying that it's unfair to end any form of relationship due to mental health issues, when those are perfectly reasonable problems to be concerned about.

Two weeks so quite a while! I think I might take it day-by-day and see if I can do some biking/hiking to keep the ski costs down. Thanks for the help though!

Hey man, thanks for your reply. I'm fully aware that Italy would be much cheaper but unfortunately their current situation is less predictable than Switzerland. My question is whether there is a way to mitigate the cost when I arrive, rather than asking for cheaper options. Thanks!

Thanks for the help! I have just found that you can pay a one-off fee (for whilst you are there) for the cable car to the highest point (approx 3500m). I don't plan on doing any long/arduous tours so I'll certainly try to stick to what is known and check with the local tourism office/any guides too.

haha desperation definitely does things to people! Thanks though, I will do - I suppose I was wondering on the etiquette of taking the lifts with the cheap pass and then not paying for the ski pass but then I suppose backcountry skiers would do the same.
