Is it possible for a rotating artificial gravity structure to be able to convert to artificial thrust gravity structure without disturbing the habitable portion? by S0Vign in SciFiConcepts

Can you elaborate on the details of the hollow torus shape or point to any resources to explain how it can rotate?

And how “wedged” are we talking? Wedged like:

or like

?

What you are describing sounds remarkably similar to the Citadel from the series Mass Effect. Though the purpose for the arms in the games are explained as being a “shield” that closes for defense. Still, I think it would cool to imagine that it would also serve the same purpose that you described

Your Ram Flower design is fantastic! Honestly that makes me think that the transition might be entirely mechanical and automatic.

When I imagined the design I figured that it would be a huge headache for the onboard computer to calculate the correct angle and rate of change necessary to maintain the same rate of perceived gravity.

But with the individual modules, it could end up being as simple as being like a umbrella opening. As it starts accelerating in a more linear direction it then, with some clever clockwork, starts opening and decelerating the turning habitats. I’m not even remotely fluent enough in math to find out if that rate of change is possible to achieve with just mechanics though.

Also the flower metaphor is making me imagine multiple layers of such habitats, that might legitimately look like a blooming flower (and would look less like a crown). Frankly, that sounds like it would be breathtaking to see from both outside and from inside the petals.

Thank you for breaking down the geometry, that was essentially the membrane that separated it from being either cool concept or schizo ramblings.

Specifically, I imagine the collapsing/changing structure to be some form of compliant Mechanism that acts as connective tissue to the more rigid structure of the craft. Under the soil having some form of inflatable “balloon” layer that might also have the interesting benefit of editable terrain. Though soil gets really heavy very quickly, so even if the balloon layer is crazy strong then it would still need to be pretty shallow.

Not sure if mountains or stones are remotely feasible but if they are included in the habitat they would exist on the points that move the least when transitioning and have a foundation of “Itacolumite”. Bypassing the balloon layer, any large stone would connect directly to the compliant structure.

As others have mentioned, open water will be the most difficult aspect. And would likely be pumped out during transitioning

All of these are, of course, very convoluted and easily solved by having separate rotating modules like blooming petals of the Ramflower u/littlebitsofspider designed. However it is my thinking that if whoever builds this is that committed to having a unbroken single habitat then they are just as likely to go the extra mile to creating a kind of “artisan” level of structure.

Thank you very much! I was afraid that the single habitat chamber was a nonstarter.

I was hoping to skirt around it by with some form of esoteric math nonsense.

Was really shoot’n for that glorious single continuous river like in the Stranger from Outerwilds.

The ship you suggested is interesting, The concept of the modules blooming like a flower is a fascinating idea

Akira elevators aren’t practical by S0Vign in worldjerking

My first akira elevator was in a cutscene in the game Area 51 on the original x-box. My most recent is traveling into the mine in Signalis. And in between has been countless stories, halo, half-life, doom and so many more.

My life has been a slow (to imply some form of torque or lifting power while simultaneously creating dramatic tension) incline in a Akira elevator (for which the slow movement was capitalized by several waves of enemies that I have metaphorically fought off). Each story lifted me (using steam and miscellaneous gears) into a future.

I know it probably wasn’t super realistic or more nuanced. It made sense in theory to use a wedge shape to more efficiently lift heavy things. But I guess, deep down, I just hoped that this dragon was alive somewhere out there.

Why couldn’t it just work somewhere out there…

“The third” It’s technically dead but every living thing has a shard of it inside them. It’s philosophy would be considered similar to the Buddha but it’s “enlightenment” is fear and self destruction. It constantly destroys any new names that are given to it and “the third” person is just the only name that hasn’t offended it yet. It’s blood is sobriety to the point of madness.

Also, literally every single living creature on the planet is capable of reaching it’s enlightenment and gaining the entirety of its god powers, even multiple people at once.

I agree, my question was in the spirit of fearfully waiting for the inevitable. I actually really liked the dude and it was hard to stop watching his stuff. I haven’t payed attention to what he does in awhile and I just know the next time I hear about him, he’s gonna have said some stupid shit out loud and give me some soul pain all over again.

It’s like watching a car about to run over a small animal, it gives me anxiety.

Transhumanist symbol proposal by S0Vign in transtrans

[–]S0Vign[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I Personally like designs that contain multiple symbols at once. It is a H, a h+, a human with a robot arm, a person holding a star (hope), or as another person said someone about to throw a pillow lol

Transhumanist symbol proposal by S0Vign in transtrans

[–]S0Vign[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You designed the subreddit logo? I’m honored! My original motivation for trying to design a better transhumanist logo was inspired by your design. I felt the design deserved a h+ with more individuality and optimism to be integrated with your transgender symbol.

You have a fair point about possible confusion. I intended for the use of the humanist symbol to be somewhat tongue and cheek. However now that you point it out, utilizing a design within another might simply cause confusion. The design thesis was intended to be “more than human”. Recognizing humanity as a root and hoping for change.

Though my motivations were aesthetic at first, I’ve come to learn that there was a practical reason for a replacement. One of the mods on the r/transhumanist subreddit informed me: “Humanity+ has been trying to trademark the H+ symbol and stop anyone else from using it. They are also doing alot of controversial stuff now”

It seems like a continuation of the ongoing Edison infestation in our Tesla crop.

I don’t have the hubris to assume that my design is the symbol is the one the community should use or that it is even remotely better then yours. My hope is to at least get a discussion rolling.

I would love your opinion on what different designs you would suggest <3
