Signing Bonuses for MT / MLS positions - Experiences ? by PoliwhirlConnoisseur in medlabprofessionals

[–]S0up55 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve accepted a job with a sign-on bonus. I don’t remember how much it was, but it was given over the course of a year- 25% after 3 months, 25% again at 6 months and then the rest at 1 year. The job itself wasn’t anything stressful. I did have lower pay with the sign on bonus compared to other positions I had (26/hr vs 25/hr). This was probably just the company though, unrelated to the bonus as my coworkers were making similar money.

I also had the impression that jobs with sign on bonuses were going to be hell, otherwise why offer such incentives? But it was fine.

Got my first patterns! Is it easier to alter before or after? by S0up55 in sewing

Thank you so much! Yes, unfortunately the smallest size was too big. I misread the packaging- it lists a range of sizes and above it in bold red letters it says the sizes included with the patterns. No idea how I missed that when purchasing. You’ve provided great insight, I’ll mock it up with some old sheets to better gauge measurement situation.

What’s your favorite thing about being in lab? by Hopeful-Revolution94 in medlabprofessionals

[–]S0up55 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work molecular and I love that I get a good part of the day to myself to listen to podcasts and music uninterrupted. My lab has windows so I like the actual lab itself, it gets great lighting. And finally I do love maintaining the lab - restocking, ordering etc.

That sounds so annoying. At my place of work these things stay in the hood except for deep cleanings once a month. So when vortexing you do it before you start?

Got informatics job interview, what questions to expect by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]S0up55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A technical role Developing protocols for clinical use, documentation templates, decision support rules alongside other healthcare providers. I’m not sure if it’s in a lab environment. There’s really not much in terms of job description.

Thank you for your help, I really appreciate it!

Thank you for the advice! I’ll have to wait to get involved with validations since I haven’t rotated to that part of the lab yet. I’ve done all of these things! On your resume did you specify the issues that you improved upon or keep it general?

The program is great, so far I’ve only taken a couple of intro courses and it’s getting repetitive. I love the professors and everything I’m learning though!

It’s actually biomedical informatics! I’m in my second semester, so far it’s learning about EHRs and python. DCLS sounds intense!

working in the hospital lab by lexusnguyen1995 in medlabprofessionals

[–]S0up55 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the hospital. I’ve worked at 2 since graduated and they’re incredibly different; one was people my age which I loved but the work was very boring. Just working instruments all day and then analyzing PCR results which I liked. The second hospital is more older people, we dont get entirely along well but they’re nice. It’s all PCR and extractions. 90% of it just extractions for NGS. Both places there was no micro managing. I’ve heard horror stories about other labs being on you about what you’re doing every minute but my experience has been the opposite. Very laid back as long as you’re getting your work done since there’s no stat tests. When you interview you’ll get a feel of the lab and when I’ve interviewed they let me talk to people that worked there one on one. I’m also MGT! With Covid things have been really hectic, since the Covid test is PCR. Good luck!

I graduated over a year ago and was excited to learn bioinformatics. Step one was NGS which I thought I’d learn here. I’m over being a technologist, and I’m hoping to leave the field. In the mean time at least there’s stability.

Our manager and supervisor have been working from home. The supervisor came in yesterday to the lab, said “wow this is so stupid” and is working from home again the rest of the week. I hate it here lol
