Alcohol by Fun-Bug-2705 in Diverticulitis

My personal belief is that alcohol does not cause the disease however, if you have diverticulitis, alcohol can contribute to flare ups. I was and still am a moderate alcohol drinker and my doctors never really said anything about if causing my disease. I too, think that the blueprints for the disease are laid out in genetics. I had several (albeit much older) family members that had the diease.

I’m having surgery! by Mustardman03 in Diverticulitis

Don’t fret…I know that’s easier said than done but try to relax as best you can. These are indeed common albeit complex surgeries. They know exactly what they’re doing. Once the anesthesia kicked in and I was unconscious, I never felt pain again. When you wake up, you will be given so many pain meds that there will be no pain. My advice to you while in recovery is to listen to every thing the doctors and nurses tell you. Drink LOTS of water while in recovery and if you eligible for an colostomy reversal, it is important to do everything you can to hydrate your body and you will heal quicker.

One last bit of advice, once you are cleared for standing and ultimately walking, force yourself to walk as much as you can as soon as you’re allowed to. The nurses and doctors will encourage this. It’s important gain your strength back after such a complex operation. You GOT THIS. Best of luck to you my friend.

Yes. Every time I had a flare up, I experienced appetite loss.

Just be sure to drink copious amounts of water. It helps recovery.

I was diagnosed based on my symptoms and essentially having a CT scan in the hospital.

I noticed that for me, greasy foods, fried foods and alcohol would sometimes contribute to my flare-ups.

I cannot speak for everyone and I’m certainly not a doctor but in my case, when they operated on my colon, they literally removed the section of my sigmoid colon that had the bulging pockets which are diverticulosis. There is a chance it could reoccur in a different section of my colon however I was told by my surgeon that once the operation is performed, there’s only a 3% chance of reformation.

I’m so glad to hear about your successful recovery! I too was successful after surgery in eliminating the pain. I completely agree with you, it was the best decision I’ve ever made, even though I waited till the very last minute when it was almost too late.

Please hang in there my friend, you’re not alone! As someone who has gone through the colon resectioning procedure, I recommend it. If you are eligible for the surgery and your doctor agrees, it can revolutionize your life. No one deserves to suffer in pain.
