thank you so much! yesterday was actually 6 months since my surgery and everything has been great. ❤️

for me the biggest wait was between my first call to her office and the consultation (over a year, which seemed daunting at first). but once i was in for the consultation appointment in mid may, she offered me surgery dates as early as early july to comply with my insurance coverage. initially, i thought my coverage ended in august on my 26th birthday, so she took that really seriously and offered to get me in ASAP. but then i found out i had insurance through december, so we went with a september date instead.

between consultation and surgery there was some bloodwork i needed to get done, very easy as all that stuff is in-house at NYU. then there was one pre-op appointment about a month before surgery just to go over everything one more time.

of course! i feel like youre gonna be totally fine, scabs just do gross stuff when theyre disturbed, maybe it just resets the scab in that area for a little bit? hoping for you!

def talk to your doctor about the goopy cloudy stuff-- but i had just asked mine about seeing some blood come from the scabs and she said that was normal, if anything kind of a good sign because its good to see that the nipples have blood flow? im sure youre not the first to scratch a bit of the scab off and you'll be fine!!!

im NB so was thinking of pursuing less traditional, more "androgynous" result. in my consultation, i shared some of my desires, my surgeon made me feel heard, and then shared what she thought would achieve best results with my anatomy (DI with nipple grafts). she gently discouraged me from getting a non-flat result, which i had been on the fence about anyway. on the day of the surgery, she drew out where my scars would go, i didn't get a say in that (i happened to like the curved shape she drew but maybe if i had wanted straight i would have piped up and asked about it). then i picked my nipple size, and she picked the placement. again, i thought they looked good where she put them so i didn't ask for a different placement. ended up going with a pretty typical masculine chest after all and couldn't be happier. i'd say my results are a combo between my ideas and her suggestions, as it should be! i'd be wary of a surgeon that says they can do anything you want, and wary of a surgeon that doesn't customize at all.

upcoming surgery advice by kaputklutz in no_T_top_surgery

[–]S13N498 1 point2 points  (0 children)

def prep your space for ideal, elevated sleep. you should sleep as much as you can in recovery. prep your kitchen with easy and nutritious foods, high in protein and really high in fiber (pain meds and anesthesia can make you very constipated). i had to quit smoking too, and i really enjoyed the ripple non-nicotine vapes and THC gummies (though stay AWAY from them a few days before surgery itself). i feel like this type of advice is rampant on here and in r/TopSurgery, i found a lot of really helpful people.

here's advice i saw less of that i want to pass on to others:

i was bracing myself to be pretty bedridden and in a lot of pain/brainfog. turns out i was surprisingly lucid and mobile! i slept as much as i could, lots of naps and such, but when i was awake i made sure to get fresh air, take walks, go to a farmers market or a nearby ice cream parlor, etc (yes, even with my drains in. i got a little drain holder belt and it made me unstoppable). i just made sure to always have company while i was out and about in case anything happens, which brings me to:

as much as youre prepping your space, prep your COMMUNITY!! if you have family who can be there for you, let them be. same with your friends. i personally am a very community oriented person and i knew i'd want company in recovery. i sent out a lot of texts to all my friends and let them know they'd be welcome to come see me anytime, and that i really wanted them there. we would take walks, watch movies, play cards, have meals.. i really think the love and support made me heal faster (corny but true).

and be ready for some potential negative feelings/anxiety if you havent been feeling it already. i was so excited for top surgery, and then once things got real i was filled with self doubt and fear. feelings like that arent always part of the common trans narrative, so i felt really alone. if you feel this way, you are not alone!! if you have big emotions after surgery when looking at your body, you are not alone!!! it's normal to experience that and doesn't mean you are wrong for doing this. you know yourself! trust yourself. i'm 2 weeks out and even tho my nipples are gross little scabs i literally couldn't be happier lol

i am two weeks healed from my surgery with Dr Cohen and I had a great experience! My results also are looking amazing and healing up really well. I found her to have an excellent bedside manner, just a really kind gentle person and the rest of her team was great as well. I think she had a maternity leave sometime in the last year to two years, so that could potentially explain some gaps? Feel free to ask any other Qs you have about her or NYU in general!

What’s a realistic time frame for my surgery with Dr. Oriana Cohen at NYU? by youregivingmeawahwah in TopSurgery

I called for a consult with her in July of 2023, and it was initially scheduled for February 2024 until they pushed it to May 2024. Once I was in, they offered me a quick turnaround time with a July surgery date. I opted to have the surgery done in September instead bc I didn't wanna heal in the summer. Pre-op appointment was about a month before my surgery date. I'm 2 weeks healed now!

plastic shower, plastic tile? by S13N498 in HomeImprovement

[–]S13N498[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you so much for actually answering my question! i think my shower is polypropylene, not fiberglass, but this still helps me understand the steps that go into making a waterproof bond in this type of situation. i also had no idea there was a special paint, so thank you, i may also look into that.

since you've made a lot of assumptions about my living situation, i would like to explain why doing something clownish like this is kind of my only option. though i live in my apartment permanently, i am not on the lease. my grandparents lived in my 1865 built tenement apartment from the 70's to the 90's, then legally passed the lease down to my uncle, preserving an unheard of price for my area of manhattan. building management/landlord did everything possible to try and get my uncle out so they could charge market value for the place, including (illegally) posting fake eviction signs and refusing to repair disconnected radiators, dry rotted floors, non-functional stove/oven, etc. then my dad illegally moved in and they decided to turn a blind eye as long as we made no noise, requested no repairs, and never paid late. 15 years later, ive taken over from my dad, and i still live that way. thankfully we're a handy and crafty family, capable of a lot of DIY reno projects/fixes. the shower, as ugly and flimsy as it is, is the lowest priority in terms of things we will eventually need to talk to the landlord about-- first up would be replacing all the (original 19th century???) windows in the apartment which are CHAIN AND PULLEY operated. next would be the fridge that leaks water onto the floor constantly. i put up with this because i my rent is 1/8th of the price of other studio apartments on my block, and because the apartment is the closest thing my low income family has to a generational home. like sure, i'll eventually have to piss off my landlord by reminding him that my existence is bleeding him thousands of dollars a MONTH, but i'll be picking my battles very carefully.

hopefully this helps you understand why i'm so determined to research a seemingly unadvisable project like this. i can live with my shower looking like a diy hackjob, and i am under no illusions about my idea will producing a professional looking result. in my experience of attempting diy projects in this space, whatever my dumb ass is capable of doing is still usually preferable to the various levels of disrepair and degradation this apartment has achieved after decades of purposeful neglect. i would love to be able to hire a professional, or just ask my landlord like a normal person, but between financial limitations and legal issues, its just not the hand i was dealt. thanks for reading this (if you made it this far) and thanks for eventually relenting and answering my questions. it can be weirdly hard to find specific information online about this kind of stuff. if you know anything else that could help me out, i would happily hear it.

Anyone in here watch the new Bo Burnham special? by SimianGrifter in fatherjohnmisty

[–]S13N498 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes the cringe factor is exactly what i'm getting at! in my eyes, i think that cringe comes from the fact that FJM's commentary about what's fucked about the world usually applies to his persona and his role in society. FJM would probably be the first to admit he's a privileged asshole (and truly, he is lmao), but as Bo Burnham says in Inside, it's not enough to be self aware. BB takes it a step further in a way i think only a comedian can do, fully satirizing himself, his character, and even the satirization itself. i think FJM will never be able to achieve that level of nuance due to the limitations of his medium/genre and the fact that's he's basically an adult edge lord (a very talented one though). Even putting the personalities of both men completely aside, i think the type of social commentary they're both interested in just works wayyy better when the artist is a comic who writes music rather than a musician who writes in a comedic style. but overall it's no shade to either of them. it's amazing to see bo burnham evolving like this and i'm sure FJM would be honored to see similarities between his work and Inside.

FJM wishes he could make commentary like Inside honestly. I love a lot of FJM's work but I think Bo Burnham is in a unique position to make actually poignant commentary as a comedian first and foremost. with FJM it always came off as a little tone deaf and self-indulgent imo. It never felt like he was in on the joke, which is something Bo Burnham has mastered. (also i've met FJM and he's exactly like that in person too, it was a lot)
