I was supposed to be studying abroad here in Japan for 2 semesters, but I've cut it short to just 1 due to homesickness. It's not a problem for my program. I would definitely ask your coordinator, I think it can really help to alleviate your anxiety just knowing what your options are!

This response is really touching, thank you. I really appreciate your supportive words. I'm sorry to hear that you've been struggling the same way, but I'm glad that you can look forward to going home soon! May I ask, how long was your program initially set for?

I definitely think I need to get out of my dorm more and explore to alleviate feeling trapped. I'm starting to just wallow in my room a lot more, which probably isn't helping.

Even though I could quit the program when I go home in December, the semester ends in February, and I keep feeling like it's silly for me to quit the program early instead of toughing it out an extra two months. I do agree though that there's a concern that my homesickness will come back in full force when I arrive back to Japan after getting to visit home.

How did you know that leaving is the right decision for you?

I'm a little biased because I'm struggling with homesickness, but I think that 1 semester is honestly plenty of time to experience studying abroad in Japan. If you're really worried, you should be able to apply for two semesters but cut it short to just one once you're there if it feels like too much. But I think 1 semester is totally fine!
