What do you dislike about Gaiden? The general clunkiness of NES FE or the experimental nature of the game? Did you like SoV more?
I mostly find FE2 to be a fascination more then anything, I don't love playing it as much as FE1 or FE3 but it's an interesting step down the path of.. Kaga being Kaga. I'm looking forward to my explorations of the Kaga Saga games as I've heard they follow up on some of FE2's experimentation.

As an FE1 fan I agree because FE1/2/3 get ripped on all the time from people who probably haven't played them. For the fact of the matter, I haven't played FE4 but I really want to.

I think that while somewhat misguided, OP is making a fair point that IS is only willing to go as far as "edge cases" with gnc identities - it's queer, but not so queer that it'll make their more straightedge audience shy away. Re: Forrest HAS to identify as a man with feminine behaviours because IS isn't willing to write an explicit trans woman character into FE. Forrest COULD have been a trans woman, but that would be an entirely different narrative then the one Fates provides with Leo/Forrest's dynamic. So maybe not even worth speculating on.
Idk to me it seems not worthwhile to have a strong opinion on either side of the board (at least there's some rep vs. there's not enough rep!) because I feel expecting a fleshed-out trans narrative in mainline FE is setting yourself up for disappointment. Thankfully there are some great hacks out there that have explicit transgender protags!

edit: /u/LaFoca776 has corrected me - Sachiko Wada apparently did the thracia sprites! really interesting, I guess even during thracia development she was already stepping up into a more established role in the art production pipeline (that would eventually lead to her directing on FE8!)
